War of the Ring: The Card Game

Ian Brody reveals first details on the Hope & Despair expansion for War of the Ring: The Card Game.

"Ian Brody announces Hope & Despair for War of the Ring: The Card Game, coming in 2026 with 54 new Story cards and the resource token mechanic."

Ian Brody, the designer of War of the Ring: The Card Game, recently shared important updates on the BoardGameGeek forums regarding the upcoming expansion, titled Hope & Despair. Originally conceived as a secondary module in a larger project, the expansion has evolved into a standalone 54-card set, focusing on a new card type called Story cards. The set will include 36 faction cards and 18 replacement cards for the Against the Shadow mode.

The main mechanical innovation lies in the introduction of story tokens. These tokens were designed to counteract effects that, during playtests, proved overly powerful in Epic Duel when used indefinitely. The tokens will serve as a resource for activating Story cards played in the pool, adding a layer of strategic management and enhancing combinations with existing cards, such as Wizard items or the Ent-draught. Brody indicated 2026 as the expected release window, noting that the timing depends on the approval processes of Ares Games and the licensees.
