The FroGames Review
Build a Japanese garden together. You know that shapes exist to be completed, but not which ones. You can only talk about what you see, never about what is in your hand. The lantern is the only way to say 'here, look here' without saying why.
WHAT IS IT
Two gardeners who don't speak, one garden to complete together
Niwashi is a pure cooperative game for two players by Gautier de Cottreau and Baptiste Laurent, with illustrations by Yoshito Fujiwara. Published in 2024 by Arkham Society, the game brings the art of Japanese gardens to the table through a system of limited communication and layered card placement. The title takes its name from Japanese master gardeners, custodians of an art defined by balance, silence, and hidden forms.
Each player holds tiles divided into three colored plots (the four seasons or sand). You must overlay them to reveal specific shapes of a color, but no one knows which shapes the other needs to complete. You can only describe what you see on the table, never what is in your hand. The only exception: playing the lantern, placed where you want, how you want, to give the other person a silent clue. The game ends when one player runs out of tiles: you count how many objectives you have hit.
What the world is saying
"Niwashi is a cooperative game with limited communication for 2 players only."
— Arkham Society
Niwashi has that rare quality: it manages to make you feel the effort of building something without words, and the relief when the other person finally understands.

What's in the garden
Tiles, shapes, and a lantern
Garden tiles
Cards divided into three colored plots. You layer them to build the garden and reveal hidden shapes. Each color represents a season or sand.
Objective cards
Secret shapes you must complete. The other player doesn't see them. You must help them guess without naming them, only by describing the garden already on the table.
The lantern
The only way to say 'look here' without words. You place it where you want, how you want, to give a hint. It burns your turn, but it can save the game.
Campaign
After the first few games, you can embark on a journey through Japan. Each challenge adds restrictions: blocked areas, forbidden tiles, more complex objectives.

SYMPHONY OF SEASONS
Building nature requires patience and absolute trust.
The real difficulty is not placing the pieces in the right place, but giving up the voice to rely exclusively on gestures and invisible intentions.
When you place a landscape element, you must decide whether to close your own scheme or desperately facilitate what you believe to be your ally's plan.
At the end of the journey, the score is just a detail compared to the boundless beauty of the landscape you will have created by working together.

Where it tests you
This charming board game hides a reassuring exterior, a cooperative puzzle that's incredibly tough and punishing for those who act impulsively. The tile-placement mechanic requires impeccable vision, forcing the pair to perform a profound exercise in deduction and patience. If you enjoy the intellectual challenges of strategic gardening, you'll find yourself faced with a masterpiece of elegance and calculated frustration.
