It's you who comes out of the screen

There's a moment in every '80s horror film when the screen shakes, the film tears, and something that shouldn't be there emerges from the projector. A claw, a killing machine, a creature made of shadow and hunger.

Spooktacular

Here. In Spooktacular, that creature is you.

Forget the usual co-op games where you have to save the campus or survive a masked killer. Here, you're the threat. The star. The villain from a VHS poster.

The Bard

And you just have to do what you do best: scare, devour, and collect your ticket to glory .

Available on FroGames.it, Spooktacular is a competitive horror board game by D. Brad Talton Jr. published by Level 99 Games, that does one wonderful thing: it puts you in the (slapped) shoes of the monster.

Level 99 Games creates experiences that feel like tabletop video games, with powerful characters, unique powers, and jaw-dropping atmospheres. Spooktacular is perfectly in their style: fast-paced, visually stunning, and asymmetrical to the core.

A tabletop horror game with movie rules

The setting isn't a pretext. It's the heart.

Spooktacular

Spooktacular takes place in a movie theater during the horror marathon of '86. Then something happens. The nightmares on the screen take shape, and the game begins.

Each player controls a unique monster , with asymmetrical powers and signature cards. There are 20 different monsters : from the killer machine to the possessed puppet, from the vengeful ghost to the mutant slime. Each has a style, a tone, a story.

And this is important: you don't play an interchangeable role . You play an identity.

Why this theme? Why like this?

Talton Jr. said that Spooktacular was born from two loves:

  1. 80s pop culture , with its saturated colors, naive horror, grotesque monsters
  2. The desire to empower the player , turning the threat into the protagonist

"In too many games you play the hero. In this one, you play fear ."

The result is a game where you don't chase monsters, you play them . And you have a blast.

Furthermore, each monster isn't a simple parody. They are intelligent archetypes :

  • Killtron 3000 recalls Maximum Overdrive and Terminator
  • The Doombox is a mix between Videodrome and The Ring
  • Junky the Clown is not Pennywise, but he breathes its grotesque essence

What happens in a game of Spooktacular?

Spooktacular

Each shift goes like this:

  • Play a card from your monster deck: scare, devour, corrupt, confuse
  • Move your miniature through the cinema rooms, each with different effects and interactions.
  • Draw new cards , plan your next turn

The goal? Collect Spooktacular Tickets, the victory points that will earn you the title of ultimate monster.

Each monster has:

  • A personal deck with unique actions
  • Special abilities consistent with the character (e.g. Doombox transmits mental signals, Killtron overwhelms everything)
  • A variable difficulty level , making each game different

And yes, it's a competitive game . No allies, no teams. Just you, the cinema, and your hunger for victory.

A neat detail? The system is anti-kingmaking : no player is eliminated, and no one can ruin another's game. A designer's touch.

Solitaire? A pearl apart

Spooktacular

Yes, there's also a solo mode . And no, it's not filler. In this mode, you play against Killtron 3000 , a robotic creature programmed to destroy anything that moves. The automaton has a simple but lethal logic.

Perfect for those who want a short, thematic, and satisfying solo board game .

Why Spooktacular Works (and Is Really Scary)

Spooktacular

🔹 True asymmetry

20 monsters. 20 styles. Zero carbon copies. Every game is a new scene from your own personal B-movie.

🔹 Strong and integrated theme

Horror isn't just in the graphics: it's in the actions, the turns, the design. Every card is a scene. Every monster is a legend.

🔹 Fluidity

Simple rules, quick turns, increasing depth. You don't get lost among the tokens: you're right in.

🔹 True scalability

It works with 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 players. Each configuration has its own pace.

🔹 Video Game Root

The game is designed like a board game: easy to read, instinctive, and engaging. And it's no coincidence: Level 99 Games was created for this.

You'll like it if you love...

Spooktacular
  • 80s horror with over-the-top monsters
