🐸 Una rana saggia sa quando dividere l’ordine… e quando aspettare il salto giusto.

The FroGames Card
The Witch rummages through forgotten pacts, inscribing runes that predate the trees themselves. The Hunter feels the veil thinning, and knows that certain shadows do not dissipate with light.
WHAT IT'S ABOUT
Ancient rites and darkness that predates Roanoke
Behind the Veil is the seventh expansion for Pagan: Fate of Roanoke, the asymmetric deduction duel designed by Kasper Kjær Christiansen, Lisa Forsch, and Kåre Storgaard. Illustrated by Lisa Forsch and Maren Gutt, this expansion delves into the ancient history of the lost colony, unearthing forgotten pacts and liturgies that survive in the roots of the oldest trees.
32 new cards enrich the Witch and Hunter decks with tools related to Gloom tokens (introduced in the Beyond the Palisades expansion, which is required to play). The Witch bends ancient secrets to her will to strengthen curses; the Hunter engages in morally ambiguous investigative practices as the veil between worlds thins.
What they say abroad
"The card pack expansion Pagan: Behind the Veil reveals the ancient history of Roanoke, its secret rites and forgotten pacts that haunt the very heart of the centuries-old trees."
— Wyrmgold GmbH
Behind the Veil requires the base game + Beyond the Palisades. It's not an entry point, it's a deep dive into the mythology for those who already know Roanoke.

Pagan: Behind the Veil
What it adds to the duel
32 cards that dig beyond the veil
Gloom Tokens
Introduced in Beyond the Palisades, Gloom tokens are the core of this expansion: they obscure information, amplify curses, hide evidence. New cards manipulate them in novel ways.
Forgotten Pacts
The Witch accesses liturgies predating the colony itself. Cards that bind power to secrets buried in the roots of the oldest trees, enhancing curses with the essence of past eras.
Ambiguous Practices
The Hunter adopts morally questionable methods to track down the Witch. New investigative cards that use Gloom to conceal ethically slippery actions.
Self-Doubt
The Witch can now sow uncertainty in her opponent's mind, making them question their own deductions. A new level of psychological bluff in the duel.

How to play
The flow of each round
Behind the Veil doesn't change the basic turn structure of Pagan, but adds layers of bluffing and deduction through the Shadow tokens.
As in the base game, both players place action tokens on active villagers to draw cards, play cards, and gain influence. The new Behind the Veil cards integrate here.
New cards require or generate Shadow tokens. The Witch can obscure key information; the Hunter can use Shadow to conceal unscrupulous investigations.
The Hunter deduces the Witch's identity among the 9 villagers. Behind the Veil cards introduce self-doubt and intentionally misleading information, making every deduction an act of faith.
The Witch wins by completing the re-naturation ritual; the Hunter wins by exposing and eliminating the Witch. The new cards don't change the conditions, but make the path more convoluted.

A game in five moments
What happens at the table
Not the rules. The experience.
Integration of the new deck
Choose which of the 32 new cards to integrate into your 50 available slots. The Witch weighs ancient pacts against modern curses; the Hunter balances orthodox methods and shadow practices.
The veil thins
The first Shadow tokens come into play. Information that was once visible is now obscured. Deduction becomes uncertain, tension rises. Both players feel that the rules of the duel have changed.
Binding pacts
The Witch plays a card that binds a forgotten pact to a villager. The Hunter sees the effect but not the cause hidden behind the Shadow. Every deduction now involves risk.
The moral shadow
The Hunter uses an ambiguous practice to eliminate a suspect, exploiting the veil to hide the action from the community's eyes. The Witch responds by sowing self-doubt. The table perceives the psychological clash.
Final revelation
One of the two has built their plan behind layers of Shadow. The other discovers too late that the deductions were flawed from the start. Roanoke claims another victim, and the winner knows they used weapons older than the colony itself.

Three things to know
Mandatory double dependency
You cannot play Behind the Veil without owning both the Pagan base game and the Beyond the Palisades expansion (which introduces Shadow tokens). It's a product for collectors and players already immersed in the Pagan ecosystem.
Layered complexity
The 32 new cards are not self-contained: they integrate with cards from other expansions. Pre-game deck building becomes even more critical, and the learning curve increases compared to the base game.
Lore-driven, not pure mechanics
This expansion is highly thematic: it brings the ancient mythology of Roanoke to the table. If you're only looking for new mechanics without caring about the narrative, you might find it sprawling. But if you love the setting, it's a dive into the dark heart of the colony.
🏆Victory and defeatWhat the ending rewards▼
How it ends
How to win and how to lose
The victory conditions remain those of the base game, but Behind the Veil adds tools to achieve or sabotage them.
Victory
- The Witch completes the re-naturation ritual by gathering enough secrets, empowered by ancient pacts
- The Hunter correctly identifies the Witch among the 9 villagers and eliminates the target
- A player uses Shadow tokens and new cards to force the opponent's fatal error
Elimination or defeat
- The Witch is exposed before completing the ritual, despite the pacts invoked
- The Hunter eliminates the wrong villager, deceived by self-doubt cards
- A player runs out of strategic options because they built an unbalanced deck with the new cards
Roanoke held secrets older than the very trees. Behind the Veil, the true story is never what you think you know.
