FroGames — Moments You'll Remember
A candle to light your slumber. An axe blow to settle accounts. The final bell always tolls for someone.
WHAT IT'S ABOUT
Three ways to expand 18th-century London
Richard Denning returns to 1700s London with three expansions in one box. Here Comes a Candle adds a complete solo mode, variable-duration events, and timed objectives. Plus 10 new cargo tiles and bells 50-100% larger. Illustrations by Andree Schneider.
At the table, you can play alone through six different careers, or add events that change the rules for a variable number of turns, or pursue objectives before time runs out. The three multiplayer modules can be combined. The solo module remains separate.
What they say abroad
"Chip chop chip chop the last man is dead"
Taglio taglio taglio taglio l'ultimo uomo è morto
— Traditional English nursery rhyme
Here Comes a Candle offers three distinct expansions that you can combine or play separately. The solo module is built around the six careers of the base game: a designed, not adapted, experience.

Oranges & Lemons: Here Comes a Candle
Mode designed with six distinct careers, each with different objectives and conditions. It's not a reduced version of multiplayer: it's an experience in itself. It loses competitive interaction, but gains narrative depth.
What you find in the box
The three modules and the new components
Here Comes a Candle
Events with variable duration that change the rules for a few turns. You don't know when they end: you flip them when a condition is met.
Here Comes a Chopper
Public objectives with a deadline. You must complete them before a certain turn or lose points, opportunities, advantages.
Solo Mode
Six different careers with specific rules and conditions. It functions as a strategic puzzle with multiple possible solutions.
Bells and Cargo
25 larger bells (50-100% compared to the base game) and 10 new cargo tiles to vary the main game.
Three expansions, one box. Choose if you want more tension, more variety, or simply to play alone.
A game in five moments
What happens at the table (multiplayer mode with expansions)
Not the rules. The experience.
Event cards are revealed
Before starting, reveal the active events and objectives. Someone reads aloud. Someone else immediately realizes that their initial plan is already dead.
The first event activates
The rules change. Someone immediately takes advantage. Someone else curses because they had planned differently. The pace of the game accelerates.
The first objective expires
Those who completed it gain. Those who didn't lose ground. The race for the second objective starts immediately, more aggressive, more desperate.
One event ends, another begins
The condition is met, you flip the card, you read. The table laughs or curses depending on who was ahead.
Final count with surprises
Base points, completed objectives, event bonuses. Whoever thought they had won finds themselves in second place. Someone immediately asks for a rematch.
How to play
The flow of a game with expansions
Each expansion integrates into different moments of the base game, without making it heavier.
Decide which expansions to use. Prepare the event cards and objectives. Reveal the first ones. If you play solo, choose your career.
You play Oranges & Lemons normally, but active events modify actions, costs, and earnings. Every few turns you check if the event ends.
At predetermined turns, you check if you have completed the objectives. Those who complete them earn bonuses. Those who don't suffer penalties or miss opportunities.
The game ends as usual. But the score includes objectives, completed events, and expansion bonuses. It often overturns the order of finish.
Why it's different from other expansions
Six elements that make the difference
Events of variable duration
They don't last a fixed number of turns. They activate when you meet a condition written on the card. It could be immediately or ten turns later. You never know how long an event will last, and this changes how you plan.
Timed objectives
They are not optional bonuses. They are races against time. Whoever completes them first earns more. Those who ignore them lose ground that is difficult to recover.
Six distinct careers for solo play
Each career has different victory conditions, special rules, and dedicated cards. It's not "playing against an automa". It's a strategic puzzle with six variations.
Larger bells
It's not just aesthetics. The original bells were small. These are 50-100% larger. They are visible, recognizable, and easier to handle.
10 new cargo tiles
They mix with the base tiles. They add combinations, variability, and alternative strategies. Every game becomes less predictable.
Total modularity
You can use only events, only objectives, or both together. The solo module remains separate. Choose the level of complexity you want, game by game.
How it ends
How to win and how to lose
Victory conditions change based on the active modules.
Victory
- Base score + completed objectives bonus + favorable events
- In solo: complete the victory condition of the chosen career
- Whoever manages events and deadlines better earns more points than rivals
Defeat or penalty
- Expired objectives = lost points or missed opportunities
- Ignored events that benefit others
- In solo: fail the victory condition within the turn limit
Here Comes a Candle is not an expansion that just adds cards. It's three expansions in one, each with a different impact on the game.
Frequently Asked Questions
FAQ on Oranges & Lemons: Here Comes a Candle
Can I play only one module at a time or do I have to use them all?
Each module works independently. You can play only with events, only with objectives, or both. The solo module remains separate and does not combine with the other two. Choose based on how much complexity you want in the game.
Does the solo module really work or is it a forced adaptation?
It is designed specifically for solo play, it is not a reduced version of multiplayer. Each career has its own rules, different victory conditions, and a strategic puzzle to solve. There is no automa to manage: you play against the game system itself.
Are events random or predictable?
You reveal them at the beginning, so you know which ones are active. But you don't know how long they will last: they end when a condition written on the card is met. This forces you to plan with uncertainty.
Are the larger bells just aesthetic?
No, they are functional. The originals were small and difficult to handle. These are 50-100% larger: they are more visible, recognizable from a distance, improving the physical game experience.
Is it available in Italian?
No, this edition is in English. It requires the base game Oranges & Lemons (also in English) to play.
Oranges & Lemons: Here Comes a Candle is an expansion for 1-5 players, duration 90-150 minutes, ages 12+, which adds three distinct modules to the base game: solo mode with six careers, variable duration events, and timed objectives. Designed by Richard Denning and published by Medusa Games, the expansion also includes 10 new cargo tiles and 25 larger bells. The multiplayer modules can be combined or played separately, while the solo module remains independent. Strategic worker placement set in 18th-century London. Available on FroGames.it.
