FroGames — Moments You'll Remember
You don't need to be alive to dance. Tonight, everyone dances at the table — skeletons included.
What it's about
Día de los Muertos has arrived at your table
La Danza dei Morti is a filler game with card and chain reactions designed by Anne-Louise Agnès and Stéphane Villielm, with vibrant illustrations by Julia Paramonova. Published by Red Cat Games and brought to Italy by Gateon Games, the game captures the essence of Día de los Muertos: a colorful, unpredictable, surprise-filled celebration.
The cards are arranged in a circle, face down. Players take turns revealing a card, applying its effect, and triggering chain reactions. Some cards move other cards in the circle, others remove them, and still others assign lucky — or cursed — tokens. The beauty of it is that nobody knows exactly what's hidden under the card you're about to flip.
When the circle is empty, scores are tallied: each light skull is worth one victory point, each dark skull is a penalty. The player with the highest score wins. Simple to explain, hard to forget — because every game has its moment of chaos that makes the table erupt.
The secret of La Danza dei Morti lies in the circle: you never know what's hidden under the next card — and chain reactions can overturn everyone's plans in an instant.
The secret of La Danza dei Morti in a nutshell
Ten minutes to learn, thirty to complete a game — and you immediately want to play again. The perfect format to start or end an evening on a high note.
From the gaming experience
La Danza dei Morti
What's inside
Small box, big atmosphere
The card circle
The cards form a circle in the center of the table, all face down. The order in which they are revealed — and the chains they trigger — builds each game uniquely.
Light and dark skulls
The true score is hidden. Each light skull is worth a point, each dark skull is a penalty. It's not enough to take many cards — you have to take the right cards.
Chain reactions
One card can move another, which activates a third. Chain reactions are the heart of the game — the moment when no one knows exactly what's about to happen.
Día de los Muertos illustrations
Julia Paramonova brought the colors and spirit of the Mexican holiday to the table — marigolds, decorated skulls, dancing skeletons in all their splendor.
The veil between the living and the dead has thinned. You're about to flip a card. What do you find underneath? Only one thing is certain: tonight, we dance.
A five-part game
What happens at the table
Not the rules. The experience.
The circle is laid out, the mystery begins
The cards are shuffled and laid out in a circle in the center of the table, all face down. Already, players are looking at each other: how many are there? What effect does that one in that position hide? Who will be the first to reveal? The table is already alive.
The first card is flipped
The first player flips a card. Great effect - they take it. Or maybe not: the effect moves a nearby card, which in turn activates another. Suddenly the circle has reorganized and no one knows exactly what was where anymore.
The jinx strikes someone
Mid-game, someone reveals a card that seemed promising - but it was a jinx. Laughter. The balance shifts. Those who were winning start to worry. Those who were behind now see a comeback. The circle thins out more and more.
The last cards, tension rises
The circle is almost empty. Few cards remain and everyone tries to remember what was where — impossible with the chain reactions that have reshuffled everything. Every choice could make a difference. Or it could count for nothing. This is La Danza dei Morti.
The skulls are counted. Then we start again.
Everyone turns over their cards. Light skulls smile, dark ones grimace. Someone won, someone lost — but the deck is already being reshuffled. In twenty minutes, another game can be played. And this time you know what not to do... maybe.
How to play
The flow of each round
Four actions that repeat in sequence. You learn in five minutes, you master it after the first game.
The active player chooses one of the face-down cards in the circle and flips it over. The circle now has a gap — and the revealed card shows its effect.
The player can choose to apply the card's effect or ignore it. Some effects move other cards in the circle, others remove them, others assign tokens.
If the effect activated other cards, they are resolved in sequence. Chains can be short or surprisingly long — and completely reshape the circle.
The turn passes clockwise. The game continues until the circle is empty, then the skulls on the collected cards are counted. Light = points, dark = penalties.
Why it works
Six things that make this dance special
The transforming circle
Cards move, are removed, change position. The circle is never the same from one turn to the next — and keeping track of everything is impossible, wonderfully impossible.
The score hidden until the end
You don't know if you're winning or losing until the skulls are counted. A card that seemed great can hide a penalty. This uncertainty keeps everyone in the game until the very end.
Unpredictable chains
A single card can trigger three, four effects in sequence. The moment a chain starts and everyone follows what happens is always the highlight of every game.
Perfect duration for a filler game
Thirty minutes at most — often less. It never drags. It ends before you get tired and always makes you want to play again immediately. The ideal format to open or close an evening.
An unforgettable theme
Día de los Muertos is not an excuse to put skeletons on cards — it's a coherent and beautiful aesthetic that Julia Paramonova has brought to every illustration with extraordinary colors and details.
In Italian, ready to play
Thanks to Gateon Games, La Danza dei Morti is available completely in Italian. No language barrier — open the box and play. Perfect even for those not accustomed to games in English.
How it ends
Light skulls versus dark skulls
The game ends when the circle is empty. Only then is it revealed who truly danced well — and who was carried away by the wrong current.
Victory
- The circle empties: all collected cards are turned over and counted
- Each light skull is worth one victory point
- Whoever has the highest score wins — simple, but the path to get there is not
- Each dark skull subtracts a point — collecting many cards is not enough
- Jinxes can change the game in a single turn
- The bad luck token can be costly at the final count
La Danza dei Morti is an unforgettable filler game: beautiful to look at, immediate to play, impossible to stop replaying. The circle awaits you tonight.
Frequently Asked Questions
FAQ about La Danza dei Morti
Is it a game for families or for gamers?
For both — but for different reasons. Families will find an immediate and colorful game that can be explained in five minutes to ages 8 and up. Gamers will use it as a light filler between more demanding games, appreciating the chain reactions and the implicit bluff in keeping track of hidden symbols. It's not a heavy game, but it's not an empty game either.
Is there a lot of luck or can you strategize?
Both, in a fair proportion for a filler. Card placement is random, and chains introduce a lot of unpredictability. But there's also a memory component — remembering where hidden symbols are — and choice: do you apply the effect or not? Do you take this card or that one? It's not a game of pure luck, but don't expect the depth of a eurogame.
Does it work well with two players?
Yes, it works. The circle is smaller, and the dynamics change — it becomes more tactical and less chaotic compared to versions with more players. However, the optimal experience is with 4-5 people, where chain reactions hit more spectacularly and unpredictability increases.
Can children aged 8 and up follow the chain reactions?
Yes. Chains seem complex on paper, but in practice, they are resolved one at a time visually and sequentially. Children aged 8 and up tend to appreciate them as moments of surprise rather than seeing them as complexity — it's part of the game's charm.
Is the game entirely in Italian?
Yes. This is the Italian edition produced by Gateon Games. Rulebook, cards, and all components are in Italian. No need for additional texts or translations — open the box and start playing immediately.
How long does a game really last?
With 4-5 players, it completes in 20-25 minutes, including setup. With 2, even less. The indicated duration of 10-30 minutes is accurate — it depends a lot on how many chain reactions occur during the game. It never drags: when the circle is empty, it's over.
