The FroGames Review
Boss Man has three thugs on the sidewalk. You have Punch at level 1, Kick at 2, Shoot at 3. Choose poorly and you're dead in two turns. Choose wisely and scroll to the right, toward the finish.
WHAT IT IS
A 9-card arcade beat 'em up, now with two players
City of Fury originated in 2022 as a solitaire nanogame designed by Barny Skinner for the 9-Card Nanogame PnP Contest on BoardGameGeek, paying homage to arcade classics like Streets of Rage and Double Dragon in a pocket-sized 9-card format.
You are a vigilante traversing a post-apocalyptic city populated by thugs, corrupt cops, and rogue cyborgs. Your mission: eliminate Boss Man. Each turn you activate one of your four Skills (Punch, Kick, Shoot, Dodge), then choose which to recharge for the next round. The Enemies follow asymmetric behaviors based on their position relative to you, and when you kill an enemy, the screen scrolls to the right and a new opponent appears, just like in 90s arcade games.
This is the new edition published by Juegorama in the Microrama Collection: compared to the original design (solitaire only), it adds a 2-player mode with new enemies and final bosses. However, the publisher's official materials are inconsistent regarding the exact nature of this mode—depending on the source, they describe it as cooperative or competitive PvP: we will update the sheet as soon as the details are confirmed.
What they're saying abroad
"The streets of this broken city are crowded with Boss Man's thugs, corrupt cops and rogue cyborgs."
— Official description
Every enemy has a unique AI that reacts differently based on your position: you must read the board and plan 2-3 moves ahead to avoid being surrounded. This analysis is based on the original solitaire design; we will update the new Juegorama 2-player mode with our first real sessions.

City of Fury — New Microrama Edition
The original design by Barny Skinner is intended exclusively for solo play. The enemies have dual behavior boxes: different behaviors based on their position relative to your Vigilante, simulating dynamic AI without needing an automa. The new Juegorama edition adds a 2-player mode alongside this.
Your weapons
Four skills to manage with care
Punch
Melee attack against adjacent enemies. At level 4, it can move you AND hit twice. At level 1, it is almost useless.
Kick
Close-range kick that displaces enemies. High levels allow you to reposition the entire screen, opening gaps toward the boss.
Shoot
Ranged attack against distant enemies. The only way to hit those backing away. At level 3-4, it can take out two targets in one turn.
Dodge
Dodge and movement. High levels heal health points. It is your emergency valve when you are surrounded.
Born as a contest nanogame, grown into a real box with a new two-player mode. The rest is always the same: read the board, choose well, strike.

🎲How to playThe rules in four moves▼
How to play
The flow of each round
A turn consists of four phases, always in the same order. No dice, no randomness: only choices. We describe here the original solo design — the 2-player mode of the new Juegorama edition follows a similar structure with additional rules.
Choose one of your four Skills (Punch, Kick, Shoot, Dodge). Perform all the Actions of its current Charge level (movement, attack, heal). Then lower that Skill to its lowest level.
Choose any two Skills (even the one just used) and increase their Charge level by 1. This is the heart of the game: every turn you build the next one.
Each active Enemy follows the behavior indicated in its behavior box: it moves, attacks, or retreats. The behavior changes based on its position relative to you (right or left).
If an enemy is dead, its card becomes a new Street to the right of the screen. The leftmost Street turns over and becomes a new Enemy. The field advances, just like in arcade games.

A game in five moments
What happens at the table
Not the rules. The solo experience, the one on which we have more consolidated information.
Setup: arrange the screen
You shuffle 5 Street Cards in a row, Boss Man on the right. You place two Enemy Cards on the last two streets. Your Vigilante starts on the left. The whole setup takes 90 seconds. There are no dice, no deck to prepare: you are already ready to fight.
First turns: the charge rises
Punch at level 1, Kick at 2. You activate Kick to hit the first enemy, then you recharge Punch and Shoot. The two thugs move following their behavior boxes: one approaches you, the other retreats. You start to read the pattern.
Mid-game: the crossroads
You have Shoot at level 4 and an enemy at a distance. You can shoot now and deal massive damage, but reset the skill. Or wait a turn and risk them surrounding you. Choose now. There is no die that will save you.
The boss scroll
You eliminate the last henchman. His card becomes a new Street on the right, the leftmost Street turns over and becomes Boss Man in the flesh. The screen scrolls just like on a Mega Drive. Only here you have to win in a few turns or you're dead.
Victory or game over
Boss Man has 0 health points. You won. Or your Vigilante is down and you have to start over. But this time you know which skills to recharge on turn 3. And you try again immediately, because the setup takes 90 seconds.

The 2-player mode is not yet 100% clear
The new Juegorama edition adds a 2-player mode, but the official materials contradict each other: some describe it as cooperative, others as competitive PvP. We will update the page when the details are confirmed; for now, take it as "there is something extra for two players".
Randomized setup, then everything is deterministic (in solo)
In the original design, the only random moment is the initial setup. After that, you don't roll dice or draw cards: every move is a conscious choice. If you lose, it's because you chose poorly, not because you were unlucky.
Variety limited by the base format
With only 9 cards in the original design, the possible configurations are limited. After 10-15 games, you will have seen most of the solo scenarios. We don't yet know how much the new 2-player mode and the new enemies/bosses announced by Juegorama will increase this number.
🏆Victory and defeatWhat the ending rewards▼
How it ends
How to win and how to lose
In solo, there are no victory points. Either you defeat Boss Man, or you die.
Victory
- Reduce Boss Man's health points to 0
- Survive long enough to eliminate all his henchmen and then face him
- Manage your Skills so you have the right charges at the right time
Defeat
- Your health points drop to 0
- You end up surrounded without a charged Dodge
- You waste high-level Skills on thugs and reach the boss without ammo
City of Fury is not a game to play once. It is a tactical puzzle that refines with every run, a tribute to arcade hall games — now also for two, with the new Juegorama edition.

Frequently Asked Questions
FAQ about City of Fury — New Microrama edition
Is the 2-player mode cooperative or competitive?
It's not yet entirely clear. Official communications from Juegorama are inconsistent: some describe it as cooperative, others speak of PvP combat between vigilantes. We will update the page as soon as we have definitive details.
Can I still play it alone?
Yes. The solo mode is the game's original design and remains fully playable: the 2-player mode is an addition to the new edition, not a replacement.
Is it already available or is it still in crowdfunding?
It is in Late Pledge on Gamefound, like the other titles in the Microrama Collection, with delivery estimated for November 2026.
How difficult is City of Fury?
You'll probably lose your first solo game. The game is more puzzle than beat 'em up: you have to memorize enemy behaviors and plan 2-3 turns in advance. But the rules are learned in 5 minutes and every run lasts only 15: you try, you fail, you start again immediately.
How long does a game last?
Setup 1-2 minutes, game 10-15 minutes. If you die earlier (it happens often at the beginning), even 5 minutes.
What mechanics does City of Fury use?
The original solo design uses Variable Set-up (initial randomized setup) and an original system of progressive charge skill management. Every turn you activate a skill then recharge two: it is a deterministic micro-engine building game.
Is it really a tribute to Streets of Rage?
Yes, in theme and structure. The horizontal side-scrolling, the enemies entering from the right, Boss Man as the final boss, the Punch/Kick/Shoot skills: everything recalls the 90s Sega/arcade beat 'em ups. But the solo gameplay is a tactical puzzle, not a chaotic beat 'em up.
How much space is needed on the table?
Minimum. 5 Street Cards in a row (about 40 cm), the Vigilante card, the Skills card, and 2 Enemy Cards. It fits on a coffee table or on a train seat.
Is it available in Italian? Do I need to know English?
The text on the cards is minimal (skill names and enemy behavior boxes), so even with basic English you can play without problems. There is currently no official Italian translation.
The people behind the game
Who invented it, who designed it, who publishes it — and what else they have done.
City of Fury is a nanogame by Barny Skinner (2022), born as a print-and-play for 1 player, now republished by Juegorama in the Microrama Collection series and available in Late Pledge on Gamefound (expected delivery November 2026). A tribute to classic arcade beat 'em ups like Streets of Rage and Double Dragon, condensed into just 9 cards in the original design. Game system based on progressive charge skill management: every turn you activate a skill and recharge two, planning future moves. Enemies follow asymmetric behavior boxes based on their position relative to the Vigilante. The new edition adds a 2-player mode with new enemies and bosses. Duration 15 minutes, recommended age 8+.
