Cosmoctopus is the new game from Henry Audubon, the designer who brought PARKS to market — one of the most beloved gateway games in recent years. Here the setting shifts to cosmic and Lovecraftian, but with a deliberately playful tone: you are a devotee of the Great Inky One, a celestial octopus that roams a dimension of modular tiles.
Your goal is simple to understand: collect 8 tentacles and win. What makes Cosmoctopus special is the path to get there — move the octopus on the tiles, collect resources, build a tableau of cards (relics, scriptures, hallucinations, and constellations) and watch your engine transform turn by turn into something increasingly powerful.
Unlike many engine builders, here you are operational from the first turn. There is no long engine setup phase: each played card has an immediate effect and opens new combos. Complexity grows with you — gently, without overwhelming you.

Four card types, infinite combinations
Scriptures (black)
Show a resource and give you a permanent discount for the rest of the game. They build the foundations of your engine.
Relics (yellow)

What happens at the table
Not the rules. The experience.
The octopus moves, the realm is revealed
Tiles shuffled, octopus placed, cards in hand. Your tableau is empty — a blank slate before the cosmic infinite. Move the octopus onto a tile, collect resources. No cards yet, but you're already observing what others are doing and imagining your first move.
The first card played changes everything
You play the first Scripture. A permanent discount on a resource — seems like a small thing. But you already feel how it will change your gameplay. Every subsequent turn looks to that card. The engine has turned its first gear.
The combo you didn't plan
Mid-game, your tableau has taken shape. You play a Relic — and realize it interacts unexpectedly with the Constellation you're building. You hadn't planned it that way. Yet it works. Better than you had planned.
You are one tentacle away from victory. Everyone knows it.
You have seven tentacles. One more and the Great Inky One is yours. The other players look at each other — someone has already raised an eyebrow. Resources are denied, the octopus is moved away from the tiles you need. You still need one turn. Maybe two.
The eighth tentacle emerges from the abyss
The Constellation is complete. Eight tentacles. The cosmic octopus is summoned — and you were the most devoted of its followers. Everything is packed away, the third-turn combo is discussed, someone already says "one more" while tidying the cards.
How to play
The flow of each turn
Three sequential and quick actions. Learned in ten minutes, mastered through combos.
Move the octopus's head to an adjacent tile on the 3x3 grid. You can spend resources to skip more spaces. The tile you land on determines what you collect.
Take the resources indicated by the tile. Each tile has a different action — some give resources, others cards, and still others special bonuses.
Pay the required resources and add a card to your tableau. Scriptures, Relics, Hallucinations, and Constellations — each transforms your engine in a different way.
At the end of your turn, discard resources and cards down to your hand limit. Completed Constellations yield tentacles — and additional bonuses for the rest of the game.

Four card types, infinite synergies
Scriptures, Relics, Hallucinations, and Constellations interact with each other in ways discovered through play. No two games produce the same tableau.

The octopus's head is shared — where you move it changes everyone's options. A spatial space that adds indirect interaction without making the game aggressive.

In solo mode (and co-op), an automatic Detective competes for tentacles. A simple but tense automa mechanism — not a sacrificed variant.

The game has no turn limit — it continues until someone completes the eighth tentacle. But the last rounds are always the most tense.

Is it really suitable for someone who has never played an engine builder?
Yes — it is one of the best gateways to the genre. The rules are explained in 15 minutes, turns are short, and the engine grows gradually. It doesn't overwhelm you with paralyzing choices from the first turn: you start simple and complexity emerges naturally as you get comfortable with the cards.
How do the solo and cooperative modes work?
In both modes, the Detective appears, an automatic opponent who moves according to predetermined rules and competes for tentacles. In solo, you challenge them alone; in cooperative, all players collaborate to stop them. The mechanism is simple to manage but creates real pressure.
How many games does it take to master the game?
The first game helps you understand the game flow. From the second, you start to see card combos and plan your tableau. By the third, the engine really hums, and the game becomes much more satisfying. Progression is rapid and frustration-free.
With how many players does it work best?
With 3-4 players, the indirect interaction from the octopus movement becomes more relevant and games are tenser. With 2, it's more controlled and strategic. Solo holds up very well thanks to the Detective. It works at all player counts — choose based on what you want from the experience.
