Clank! redefined deck-building in 2016, blending Dominion-like card crafting with the physical exploration of a fantasy dungeon. Paul Dennen created a system where every acquired card not only serves to optimize your engine, but also to survive in a labyrinth populated by monsters and guarded by a gradually waking dragon. This Master Thief Edition renews the game with rebalanced mechanics, new components, and the Wandering Monsters expansion integrated into the base box.
At the table, you build your deck by drawing cards that give you movement, combat, gold, and special abilities. You move through the dungeon, collect treasures, fight monsters. But every time you make noise — Clank! — you add your cubes to the dragon's bag. When the dragon attacks, draw. If your cubes come out, you lose health. The game is a race: whoever exits with the most points wins, but whoever stays in too long risks not getting out at all.

What you find in the dungeon
Movement Cards
Move you through tunnels and rooms. Without movement, you're stuck. With too much movement, you waste turns. Balance is everything.
Combat Cards
Defeating monsters gives you points and immediate benefits. But some are noisy: add Clank! every time you attack.
Gold Cards
Used to buy better cards at the market. Expensive cards are powerful but often make more noise.
Ghost Cubes
New mechanic in the Master Thief Edition: ghost cubes that change the dynamics of the dragon's bag and increase the risk.

What happens at the table
Not the rules. The experience.
The silent descent
Everyone starts with an identical deck of basic cards. The first turns are cautious exploration: you move slowly, buy the first cards at the market, plan your path to deeper treasures. The dragon sleeps. Someone is already thinking about how to exit.
The first Clank!
Someone buys a noisy card or enters the wrong room. The first cubes go into the dragon's bag. Nervous laughter begins. The dragon hasn't attacked yet, but your cubes are in there, visible, and you know they'll be drawn eventually.
The race for major treasures
Everyone has built functional decks. Now it's a race: who gets to the 20-point treasures in the deepest rooms first? Whoever has the fastest deck wins the best artifacts. Whoever is too slow only finds closed doors and monsters. The dragon attacks regularly and the first players begin to lose health.
The devastating attack
The dragon draws, and only your cubes come out. You lose 5 health in one turn. Now you have to decide: do you keep digging for better treasure or do you escape with what you have? Someone screams. Someone else laughs. Everyone looks at the bag before each attack.
The desperate escape
Whoever exits first activates the countdown: from that moment on, the dragon attacks every turn. Those still inside must run towards the exit. Those who don't make it in time are eliminated and lose all points. Those who exit count: treasures, artifacts, killed monsters, secret tokens. The one who dared the most without dying wins.
How to play
The flow of each turn
Clank! is a classic deck-builder with a physical map that changes everything.
You draw 5 cards and play them all. You gain resources: movement (boots), combat (swords), gold (coins), and special abilities. Each noisy card adds Clank! to the dragon's bag.
You use movement points to cross tunnels and rooms. Some rooms require special abilities (keys, lockpicks). You collect minor treasures, fight monsters, activate secret tokens. The deeper you go, the more valuable the treasures are.
Spend gold at the market to buy more powerful cards. Better cards cost more and often make more noise. Add purchased cards to your discard pile: they will come into play in subsequent turns.
If the dragon tracker indicates it, the dragon attacks: draw cubes from the bag equal to the number indicated. Each cube of your color = 1 damage. When you run out of health points, you are eliminated (and you lose everything if you haven't already exited the dungeon).

The dragon's bag
It's not just random damage: you see your cubes enter the bag every time you make noise. The tension is tactile. When the dragon draws, everyone watches. It's physical push-your-luck, not abstract. Each attack is a mini-climax.
Dungeon as a chessboard
The board isn't just theme: it's the playing field. Where you move determines what you can buy, what treasures you can take, how much you risk. Whoever explores better wins, not just whoever builds the best deck. Geography matters.
Ghost Cubes (new Master Thief)
The new ghost cubes alter the probability calculation in the bag. They aren't yours, but they influence the dragon's draws. They add a layer of unpredictability that makes risk management more complex and stimulating than the original edition.
The race against time
When the first player exits, the countdown begins: the dragon attacks every turn and those who remain inside have a few rounds to escape. It's a brutal mechanic that punishes greed, rewards timing, and creates heart-stopping finales. No one knows who will win until the points are counted.
Wandering Monsters (integrated expansion)
The Master Thief Edition includes 40 new cards and mechanics related to tunnel monsters. Monsters are no longer static: they move, change, create unforeseen events. Each game has different patterns of threats. The dungeon is alive.
Revised balancing
This edition is not just a reskin: Dire Wolf has adjusted the end-game mechanics, revised card balance, and improved the difficulty curve. Separate tracks for Rage, Health, and Market make setup clearer and the game smoother. It's Clank! as it was meant to be.
How it ends
How to win and how to lose
The one who exits the dungeon with the most points wins. But exiting is not enough: you must exit alive.
Victory conditions
- Exit the dungeon with at least one major artifact (the most valuable treasures in the deep rooms)
- Sum points from: collected treasures, defeated monsters, artifacts, secret tokens, cards in your deck
- Whoever has the highest total wins — but only among those who exited the dungeon alive before the end of the countdown
Elimination
- If you run out of health points (due to dragon attacks or monsters), you are eliminated: you lose ALL points if you haven't already exited the dungeon
- If you don't exit the dungeon within 4 turns of the first player exiting, you are trapped: eliminated and zero points
- If you exit without ever having taken a major artifact, you only get half of your points (cowardice penalty)
Clank! Master Thief Edition is greed versus fear in game form. Every game ends with someone who exited too early and someone who didn't exit at all. And no one regrets trying.
