FroGames — Moments You'll Remember
Fritz the mouse stares at you from the window as riots break out outside. The Depression card is in your hand. And tomorrow you have to decide whether to sell the painting or pay the rent.
WHAT IT'S ABOUT
Parisian artistic life gets deeper. And more painful.
Tales From Montmartre is the first expansion for Bohemians, designed by Jasper de Lange for Portal Games. It adds 55 new cards that bring new pawed Muses to the table — Fritz the secret mouse, Constance the patient cat, Tulsi the stray dog — and a gallery of darker Hardships: Depression, Paranoia, Panic Attacks. The Belle Époque is not just about coffee and applause.
The main novelty is the Events: at the start of each round, an Event card is revealed that affects all players. A Sunny Day in Montmartre, Riots in the Streets, the World's Fair of 1889. Each round brings new opportunities, new challenges, new stories. All within that late 19th-century Paris you already knew, but more real.
What they say abroad
Sometimes inspiration comes on paws. And sometimes with demons.

Events change the game. You never know what round you're about to play.

Bohemians: Tales From Montmartre
Bohemians already had a complete solo mode in the base game. The expansion adds Events that work perfectly even solo, creating different narrative contexts each game. The mode remains the same: build your artistic career against an objective. The Events and new Hardships make the experience richer, but don't change the structure.
What's in the box
55 new cards, three categories
Animal Muses
Fritz the secret mouse, Constance the patient cat, Tulsi the stray dog. Silent (or not) companions who influence your creative journey in unexpected ways.
Dark Hardships
Depression, Paranoia, Panic Attacks. Cards that remind you that artistic life isn't romantic: it's survival. And some days are harder than others.
Events
A Sunny Day in Montmartre, Riots in the Streets, The World's Fair 1889. Each round begins with an Event that shapes the choices of all players. The game changes every time.
Integration with the base game
The 55 cards are shuffled into existing decks. No need to learn new rules: open the box, shuffle, play. The expansion seamlessly integrates into what you already know.
In an hour, you'll have painted with a mouse on your shoulder while riots broke out outside. Bohemians continues to tell the story of Paris. The real one.
A game in five moments
What happens at the table
Not the rules. The experience.
The first Event is revealed
Someone flips the first Event card. "A Sunny Day in Montmartre." Everyone smiles. Then you read the effect and realize it will change the priorities of the round. The strategies you had in mind need to be recalibrated. Immediately.
The first animal Muse arrives
Someone draws Fritz the mouse. "What does he do?" You read the card together. Fritz is secret, he subtly influences. Someone else has Constance the cat, who is patient. The Muses don't shout. They whisper.
Someone draws Depression
The table falls silent for a moment. Depression is a new, heavier Hardship than the others. The player who drew it must decide: do I face it now or drag it on? The other players understand. No one laughs.
The Event changes everything
New round, new Event. "Riots in the Streets." Suddenly the cards you held are worth differently. Anyone who planned three turns ahead has to start over. Events are the beating heart of the expansion: you never know what game you're playing.
End of game, different stories
Everyone tells their own Paris story. Someone won with Tulsi the dog by their side. Someone else overcame Paranoia and Depression to sell a masterpiece. Events wrote the story of the game. Bohemians now has more voices.
How to play
The flow of each round
The expansion integrates into the base game without adding phases. Events change the beginning of the round. New cards enter existing decks.
At the beginning of each round, an Event card is flipped. Read it together. The effect applies to all players during the round. Some Events reward certain actions, others penalize them.
The rules of the turn do not change. You draw, choose, play cards, build your artistic career. The new Muses and Hardships behave like those in the base game: they have effects, costs, consequences.
Depression, Paranoia, Panic Attacks work like other Hardships, but are more punitive. You must face them or suffer them. Some force you into painful choices.
When the round ends, discard the active Event. The next round will have a new one. This variable rhythm is the signature of the expansion: each round is a different chapter.
Why it's different from others
Six elements that make a difference
Events that shape the round
Each round begins with an Event that influences everyone. A Sunny Day in Montmartre rewards certain actions, Riots in the Streets punishes them. You never play the same round twice. Events are not just flavor: they change your tactical priorities.
Muses with paws
Fritz the mouse, Constance the cat, Tulsi the dog. The new Muses are animals, not people. Each has a discreet but persistent personality. They don't shout, they don't impose choices on you. They accompany you. And at the end of the game, you realize they made a difference.
Hardships that bite
Depression, Paranoia, Panic Attacks. The new Hardships are darker than those in the base game. They are not mechanical obstacles: they are moments of fragility. Facing them costs. Ignoring them costs more. Bohemians stops romanticizing the artistic life.
Seamless integration
No need to learn new rules. Open the box, shuffle the 55 cards into the base game decks, play. Events are revealed at the start of the round, Muses and Hardships enter the normal flow. The expansion feels immediate, but not cumbersome.
Layered narrative
The base game told your artistic career. The expansion adds historical context (Events), silent companionship (animal Muses), moments of crisis (dark Hardships). Your story now has more voices, more nuances, more truth.
Multiplied replayability
55 new cards mean exponential combinations. Events change every game. You can play Bohemians ten times and never see the same mix. The expansion doesn't add content: it adds depth. Every game is a different Paris.
How it ends
How to win and how to lose
The victory and defeat conditions remain those of the base game. The expansion changes the journey, not the destination.
Victory
- Build the most prestigious artistic career by the end of the game
- Exploit Events to your advantage to maximize opportunities
- Manage dark Hardships without being overwhelmed
Defeat
- Hardships accumulate and paralyze your choices
- Adverse Events affect you more than other players
- You end up with less prestige than your opponents
Bohemians: Tales From Montmartre is not an expansion that just adds cards. It adds layers. The Paris you knew now has riots, fairs, sunny days. And companions with paws.
Frequently asked questions
FAQ about Bohemians: Tales From Montmartre
Do you need the base game to play Tales From Montmartre?
Yes, this is an expansion. It does not contain the base rules or the components needed to play. You must own Bohemians to use the 55 new cards from Tales From Montmartre.
Do the new cards complicate the rules?
No. Events are revealed at the beginning of the round and everyone reads their effect together. Muses and Hardships work like those in the base game: you draw them, play them, they have effects. No need to learn new mechanics, just read the new cards.
Can I play with only some of the expansion cards?
Technically yes, but Events are the heart of the expansion. If you remove them, you lose the main dynamic. Animal Muses and dark Hardships also work well on their own, but the complete package is best. We recommend using all 55 cards.
Does the experience change much compared to the base game?
The rhythm and narrative depth change. Events make each round unpredictable. Dark Hardships increase emotional tension. Animal Muses add personality. Bohemians remains Bohemians, but with more facets. If you liked the base game, the expansion improves it without betraying it.
Is it available in Italian?
No, this edition is in English. The cards have text. If your group reads English without problems, it's feasible. Otherwise, you'll have to translate the effects. The mechanics remain simple, but Hardships and Events have descriptions that need to be well understood to play correctly.
Bohemians: Tales From Montmartre is the first expansion for the narrative game Bohemians, designed by Jasper de Lange and published by Portal Games. It adds 55 new cards that deepen the artistic life of Paris: new animal Muses (Fritz the mouse, Constance the cat, Tulsi the dog), darker Hardships (Depression, Paranoia, Panic Attacks) and especially Events, cards that shape each round with historical contexts such as the 1889 Universal Exhibition or Riots in the Streets. Compatible with 1-4 players, duration 45-60 minutes, it integrates into the base game without adding complexity. Available on FroGames.it.
