ARTHUR
A scary birthday
Welcome to the most chaotic party of the year. Arturo is turning 8, and his family isn't exactly... conventional. Between a moody werewolf dad and an overprotective vampire mom, your job is to throw the perfect party without getting crushed by stress.
It's a card and set collection board game where memory and secret planning are more important than luck. Behind the colorful, cartoonish graphics lies a clever management challenge: you'll have to line up your hidden targets while stealing the right items from under your opponents' noses.
Each player manages a secret "Family Plan," a row of face-down cards that determines which monsters will give you points and which will take them away. The winner isn't the one who randomly accumulates the most points, but the one who can manipulate the order of the guests and serve the cake (or spiders) at the right time.
It's the game for those who love "Addams Family" themes but are looking for a mechanic that rewards attention. Ideal if you want a fast-paced game that's fun for kids but forces adults to count cards and bluff until the last turn.
Why ARTURO stays in your head
He's grumpy and cumbersome. If you don't please him right away, he risks ruining your party (and your score).
Elegant but demanding. She wants only the best for her little Arturo, and the best is fresh cobwebs.
It's not whipped cream. What you put under the cake will determine who wins and who loses in the end.
It's everywhere. A seemingly harmless card that can suddenly overturn majorities.
Your cards are face down. You have to remember who you put in the front row without always being able to look at them.
Collect skulls, tentacles, and potions. The more they match your monsters, the higher your multiplier.

Plan the horror
The chaos is only apparent
At the heart of the party is the "Family Plan": seven cards face down in front of you. The top three cards will give you bonus points if you meet the requirements, while the bottom three will penalize you. The trick? The cards are random at the start, and you can't look at them whenever you want.
You'll need to use "Setup" cards to swap places and move the right relatives to the scoring zones. It's a risky dance: if you move too many, you lose precious turns to collect items; if you don't move enough, you risk scoring a character that will ultimately be worth zero.
The competition is interactive but indirect. Everyone contributes to the same buffet of items under the Birthday card. If you place a floating eye for your Vampire Mother, you might inadvertently help your opponent who has the same goal. You need to read each other's moves to avoid giving away the win.
Where it rewards you
Remembering where you moved that relative two turns ago is the key to not messing up the ending.
Using Setup at the right time allows you to turn around an unlucky starting hand.
Closing the game (running out of decks) when others are still unprepared is a lethal move.
Understanding what others are collecting allows you to leverage their efforts to your advantage.
Some items end up in the discard pile: only certain special characters know how to make the most of garbage.
Sacrificing a turn to peek at your face-down card can save you from a catastrophic mistake.
Where it tests you
Arturo Un Compleanno da Paura is a board game that combines memory mechanics and hand management in an atypical set collection context. The main challenge for players is balancing the acquisition of common resources with the manipulation of their own secret board. It's perfect as an introductory card game to mid-level strategies.
