FroGames — Moments You'll Remember
Just when you thought you'd figured out how to communicate with aliens, the expansion changes the rules on you. And everyone at the table realizes they've been wrong from the very first word.
WHAT IT'S ABOUT
When even the rules become a riddle to decipher
Extinction Protocol is the expansion that Clarence Simpson designed for those who thought they understood everything about A Message From The Stars. Art by Léonard Dupond and Alexandra Preda, published by Allplay, it adds two new game modes that hide not only secret letters, but also the rules themselves. The aliens have decided to complicate everything.
At the table, you still have to decipher extraterrestrial messages, but now the rules of the language change without warning. Hidden letters, scrambled patterns, communication constraints that change game after game. The team must collaborate without truly knowing what tools it has at its disposal. And by the time you figure out how it works, it's already too late.
What they say abroad
An expansion that transforms a puzzle party game into a meta-linguistic challenge. You're not just deciphering words: you're deciphering the system itself.
— FroGames
If the base game seemed too simple after a few plays, Extinction Protocol puts you back at square one. With a cruel smile.

A Message From The Stars: Extinction Protocol
What this expansion adds
Two modes that change everything
Hidden rules
The rules of the alien language are no longer fixed. Each game can have secret variations that you must deduce as you play. It's not enough to decipher the letters: you have to understand how the system works.
Advanced encrypted letters
Secret letters can now be scrambled in new ways. Patterns that seem familiar turn out to be traps. The first half-hour is always a bloodbath.
Variable communication constraints
Communication limits change between modes. Sometimes you can speak freely, sometimes only with gestures, sometimes with cryptic phrases. The team must adapt on the fly.
Extinction Protocol Mode
The mode that gives the expansion its name: a final scenario where everything is allowed for the aliens. Rules, letters, patterns: nothing is as it seems. The ultimate challenge for expert teams.
In an hour, you'll have decoded the message. Or you'll have argued about what the rule really was. In either case, you'll demand a rematch.
A game in five acts
What happens at the table
Not the rules. The experience.
Chaos Setup
Choose one of the new modes and prepare the materials. You know the base game, but now there are additional cards with strange symbols. Someone says "it'll be easy". They lied.
First Attempts
You start to decipher as always. Then you realize that something isn't right. The letters you thought you knew behave differently. The first "wait, maybe..." comes after five minutes. It's too late.
Collective Theory
Someone proposes a theory. Others contradict it. You try to test different patterns, communicating within the constraints imposed by the mode. Half the team is convinced of one thing, the other half of the opposite. The timer ticks.
The Insight (maybe)
One of you has an epiphany. "What if the rules were...?" You try it. It works. Or maybe not. Another message seems to confirm, then the next contradicts everything. Someone starts laughing nervously.
Final Revelation
You decide to risk everything on the last deduction. You reveal the cards. You discover if you understood the hidden rules or if you were playing a completely different game. In either case: applause or hysterical laughter.
How to play
The flow of each round (with new modes)
The basic mechanics of A Message From The Stars remain, but Extinction Protocol adds varying layers of complexity.
At the beginning of the game, choose one of the two new modes included in the expansion. Each introduces hidden rules or variations in the communication system.
Prepare the cards as in the base game, but now some cards or rules are kept secret by one player or the system itself. You don't know exactly what you're trying to decipher.
Each turn you try to deduce patterns, but now you also have to understand which rules are in play. Communication constraints change, letters behave differently, feedback is ambiguous.
At the end of the game (or when you reach the victory/defeat conditions), reveal the hidden cards and find out if your deductions about the rules were correct. Then discuss for another twenty minutes about where you went wrong.
Why it's different from others
Six elements that make the difference
Meta-puzzle on the rules
You're not just solving a puzzle: you're trying to figure out which puzzle you're solving. The rules themselves are part of the enigma. It's like playing Sudoku without knowing if the numbers go from 1 to 9 or from 1 to 12.
Two radically different modes
Extinction Protocol offers two completely new scenarios, not minor variants. Each changes how you communicate and deduce. One hides the rules, the other scrambles the patterns. Both are sadistic.
Extreme scalability (2-8 players)
Works great as both a two-player brain duel and an eight-player party game. With more players, collective deduction becomes chaotic (in a beautiful way). With fewer, every mistake weighs double.
Advanced Pattern Recognition
If the base game required recognizing patterns, the expansion requires recognizing patterns within patterns. It's multi-level induction. The moment you understand is unforgettable. The ten minutes before are excruciating.
Short duration, maximum intensity
45 minutes of pure gameplay. No downtime, no management phase, zero waiting. From start to finish you are focused. Your brain smokes, but you never get bored.
Exponential replayability
Two modes, variable rules, patterns scrambled every game. Even if you play the same mode twice, the experience changes. And you'll still want to try all possible combinations.
How it ends
How to win and how to lose
Conditions depend on the chosen mode, but the structure is always cooperative: you either all win or you all lose.
Cooperative victory
- Correctly decipher all alien messages within the attempt limit
- Discover the hidden rules and successfully apply them to the last messages
- Achieve the mode's objective (variable: correct messages, identified patterns, etc.)
Collective defeat
- Run out of available attempts without having deciphered enough messages
- Make too many wrong deductions about the hidden rules and get off track
- The timer (if used in advanced variants) runs out before the final revelation
Extinction Protocol is not an expansion that adds content. It's an expansion that changes how you play. And you never go back.
Frequently asked questions
FAQ about A Message From The Stars: Extinction Protocol
Is the base game required to play?
Yes, absolutely. Extinction Protocol is a pure expansion: it adds modes and complexity to A Message From The Stars, but cannot be played alone. You must have the base game (with all standard cards, materials, and rules) to use this expansion.
Is it suitable for those new to the base game?
No. Extinction Protocol is designed for those who have already played at least 3-5 games of the base game and want a more complex challenge. If you are playing A Message From The Stars for the first time, play the standard modes first. This expansion punishes those who don't know the starting mechanics well.
How much does the difficulty increase compared to the base game?
Quite a lot. The base game is already a challenging cooperative puzzle, but the rules are clear. Extinction Protocol also hides the rules: you have to deduce both the messages and the system that governs them. Expect games where you make colossal mistakes for the first 20 minutes. It's part of the fun (if you call it fun).
Can I mix expansion modes with custom variants?
Technically yes, but Extinction Protocol is already at the limit of manageable complexity. The two included modes are balanced to be difficult but solvable. If you add custom variants, you risk making the game impossible or too random. It's better to play all official combinations first.
Is it available in Italian?
No, this edition is in English. However, the game is heavily language-dependent: the mechanics are based on letters, words, and linguistic patterns. If the group does not have an excellent level of English, the experience will be compromised. Evaluate carefully before purchasing.
