The boss moves. You set a trap. The Ranger summons the wolf. Someone rolls three red dice and misses everything. The wolf hits instead. Maybe you'll make it.
WHAT IT'S ABOUT
The explorer who brings allies, traps, and arrows to the group
Too Many Bones - Ghillie is the expansion that adds the Scoutmaster character to the roster of Too Many Bones, the tactical dice dungeon crawler by Adam and Josh J. Carlson, illustrated by Anthony LeTourneau. Ghillie is the master of traps and guerrilla warfare: he summons companions on the tactical board, sets traps to slow down enemies, and strikes from a distance when melee is too risky.
The expansion includes 21 unique custom dice, the 11.5 gram PVC character chip, the neoprene mat, and a reclosable dice holder. Ghillie changes how the group approaches encounters: he brings tactical options that no other Gearloc possesses, from summoning controllable allies to traps that activate when the Ebons move. Perfect for those seeking versatility and for solo players, where the ability to cover multiple roles becomes fundamental.
What they say abroad
"Ghillie's traps and summons add a tactical layer the base game needed."
Ghillie's traps and summons add a tactical layer the base game needed.
— The Dice Tower
We tried Ghillie solo: simultaneously managing the character and summoned companions is a timing challenge. He's not the most immediate Gearloc, but when he works, he provides tactical solutions that others don't. This card is subject to update with more table experience.

Too Many Bones - Ghillie (Too Many Bones: Ghillie)
Too Many Bones is designed for solo play from the core, and Ghillie is perhaps the most complete Gearloc for solo players. The ability to summon companions on the Battle Mat allows you to cover roles that would be missing in a reduced party, and traps compensate for the lack of tactical interaction with other human players. No automa: you play normally against the Ebons, but with a character that scales perfectly from 1 to 4.
What Ghillie brings to the group
Traps, companions, and arrows: the tactical toolkit
Triggerable traps
You place traps on the Battle Mat cells. When an Ebon moves over them, they activate: damage, slowdowns, conditions. The boss charging straight into the snare is a moment to remember.
Summoned companions
Ghillie can summon controllable allies to the board: wolves, crows, spirits. They act on your turn, occupy cells, absorb hits. In solo play, they are your second line.
Ranged attack
While other Gearlocs fight up close, Ghillie strikes from afar. Variable range, consistent damage, no need to be in melee with the boss. The arrow that ends the fight while you're 3 cells away.
21 unique custom dice
Each of Ghillie's dice unlocks a different tactic: explosive traps, empowered summons, critical ranged hits. The pool is built game after game, and no two builds are alike.

How to Play
Ghillie's Turn in Battle
Each turn, Ghillie manages three simultaneous layers: the character, placed traps, and summoned companions. He is slower than the other Gearlocs, but every move counts triple.
You roll your dice pool built in previous battles. Choose which ones to activate: place a trap, summon a companion, ranged attack, move. Each die used is removed from the pool for this turn.
If you have companions on the Battle Mat, you move them and attack with them before or after your main action. They occupy spaces, absorb attacks of opportunity, and can block passages. If you die, they die too.
You can place a new trap on an empty space (costs an action) or wait for the Ebons to move over those already placed. Traps activate on the enemy's turn, not yours: you must anticipate their movements.
If you have line of sight and ranged dice, hit from a distance. Otherwise, use support actions: buff companions, repositioning, preparing for the next turn. Ghillie is never still: every turn builds the next one.

A game in five moments
What happens at the table with Ghillie
Not the rules. The experience.
Build the perfect ranger
First battle: choose the first dice from Ghillie's pool. Traps? Companions? Range? Each choice closes some doors and opens others. You look at the other Gearlocs' dice at the table and understand which tactical gap you need to fill.
The first trap activates
You place a trap in front of the narrow passage. The boss advances. Steps on the square. Boom: damage and slowdown. The other players look at you: "Ah, so that's how it works." From that moment on, you plan every enemy movement.
You summon the first companion
Critical turn: you are surrounded and the tanks are far away. You roll the summoning die: the wolf appears. You place it between yourself and the biggest Ebon. The wolf takes the hit for you. You breathe. The group repositions. You live another round.
The 3-tile distant shot
Boss at half health, narrow arena, everyone damaged. You are the only one 3 tiles from the center. You roll the ranged attack: all the right dice, high sum, critical hit. The boss falls before getting into melee range. Silence, then applause.
Victory and tally: the ranger won
End of campaign: you recount the kills. Ghillie dealt more damage than the other two Gearlocs combined, thanks to traps, companions, and calibrated attacks. He's not the flashiest character, but he's the one who held the group together. You immediately play again.
🐸Good to know beforehandThree honest things, from friends▼
Good to know beforehand
Three things you need to know about Ghillie
Managing companions, traps, and attacks simultaneously slows down your turn. In a group of 4, you are the one who thinks the most and moves the most pieces. If the table is in a hurry, Ghillie is not the ideal character. But if the group accepts the pace, the tactical versatility pays off.
Ghillie is not the Gearloc to start with. He requires experience with Too Many Bones' combat system, positioning management, and reading enemy patterns. In your first few games, you will make mistakes with summons and place useless traps. That's normal: after 2-3 battles, you'll get the hang of it.
21 dice, dozens of possible combinations. You can build a Ghillie specialized in traps and find that the final boss ignores the conditions. Or you can focus entirely on companions and run out of attack dice. The system rewards experimentation but punishes one-dimensional builds. Diversify or suffer.
🏆Victory and defeatWhat the ending rewards▼
How it ends
Victory and defeat with Ghillie
The victory and defeat conditions are standard for Too Many Bones. Ghillie changes HOW you get there, not WHEN it ends.
Victory (campaign or battle)
- Defeat the final Tyrant of the campaign after 7 days of travel (full campaign mode)
- Survive and win the single encounter if playing one-shot battle mode
- At least one Gearloc (Ghillie or ally) remains standing at the end of battle: if all fall, game over
Defeat
- Ghillie reaches 0 health and no other Gearloc is alive to continue
- The group runs out of all backup lives before reaching the Tyrant (campaign mode)
- You voluntarily abandon the campaign after a lost battle and decide not to spend resources to continue
Ghillie is not the simplest character in Too Many Bones, but he is the one who transforms an unbalanced party into a tactical machine. And in solo play, he is simply the best. Available now on FroGames.it.

Frequently Asked Questions
FAQ about Too Many Bones - Ghillie
Does Ghillie work well solo or does he need a group?
Ghillie is exceptional in solo play. The ability to summon companions and manage traps perfectly compensates for the lack of other Gearlocs at the table. Many players consider him the best character for those who play Too Many Bones alone, because he covers multiple tactical roles simultaneously without needing automatons or special rules.
Can I play Ghillie without already having experience with Too Many Bones?
Technically yes (it's a standalone expansion regarding character rules), but it's not recommended. Ghillie is one of the most complex Gearlocs to pilot: managing companions, traps, and positioning requires familiarity with the combat system. It's better to start with a more straightforward character from the core game (Pickett or Boomer) and add Ghillie after 2-3 games.
Do summoned companions act as separate characters or are they just tokens?
Companions summoned by Ghillie occupy spaces on the Battle Mat, have their own stats, and can attack/take damage. They are not mere tokens: they must be actively managed on your turn. This makes them powerful (they absorb hits, block passages, deal damage) but also challenging to pilot: you have to think for multiple entities each turn.
What mechanics does Too Many Bones - Ghillie use?
Ghillie uses custom dice pool building, hand management (choosing which dice to activate each turn), tactical grid combat, and strategic positioning of traps and companions. It is a cooperative (or solo) game with a strong character building component through the progressive acquisition of new dice during the campaign.
Is this expansion available in Italian?
Yes, the edition sold on FroGames is in Italian, localized by Asmodee. It includes all translated components: character mat, reference cards, manual. The custom dice have universal symbols, so there are no comprehension issues. The Too Many Bones base game is required to play this expansion.
