The FroGames Card
You've built cities under the sea. Now, the invisible infrastructure is needed: the one that connects, processes, governs. You place a data disc and the entire network reorganizes. Someone smiles, someone curses under their breath.
WHAT IT'S ABOUT
The Information Age arrives on the ocean floor
Vladimír Suchý returns to expand his Underwater Cities with Data Era, the second expansion after New Discoveries. Graphics by Milan Vavroň, published by Delicious Games in 2025. The setting remains the same: humanity forced to colonize the seabed, interconnected cities, scarce resources, tough choices.
Data Era introduces data discs as a new physical resource to manage. With them come data centers (new buildings) and information cities (new type of city). It's not a mini-expansion: it's an additional strategic layer that changes victory paths. Combinable with New Discoveries for those looking for even more depth. Improved components included, also usable with the base game.
What they say abroad
"Data Era adds meaningful complexity without bloating the game. The information layer feels essential, not tacked on."
Data Era adds meaningful complexity without bloating the game. The information layer feels essential, not tacked on.
— The Opinionated Gamers
This is an expansion for those who have already squeezed the base game and are looking for new paths. It doesn't simplify: it stratifies. And it does it well.

Underwater Cities: Data Era
Underwater Cities has always had a good official solo mode, and Data Era maintains it. The solo rules integrate the new components without disrupting the flow. The experience is complete, but it loses the competitive race for data centers that makes multiplayer games tense.
The new tools
What you find in the box
Data discs
New physical resource. You produce them, you spend them, you place them on data centers. They are not abstract tokens: they take up space, affect timing, and are exhaustible.
Data centers
Specialized buildings that require data discs to activate. Some give immediate points, others end-game multipliers. Choosing which ones to build is half the strategy.
Information cities
New type of city, different from metropolises and standard cities. They integrate with data centers and open up alternative scoring paths to physical production.
Improved components
Upgraded tokens and tiles also usable with the base game and with New Discoveries. Delicious Games has revised quality and readability: it's not just aesthetics, it helps the flow.

How to play
The flow of each round
Data Era does not change the turn structure of Underwater Cities. It adds options within existing phases.
Choose a card from your hand, place it on a slot on the main board. The color must match (or you have a wild card). Some cards now produce data discs instead of classic resources.
Resolve the effect of the played card. If it produces data discs, you take them from the supply. If it requires discs to activate (some new cards), you spend them now.
Resolve the action of the slot where you placed the worker. Some new spaces allow you to build data centers or information cities by paying data discs.
Pass to the next player. When everyone has played all their cards, draw a new hand and advance the era. Built data centers remain active and continue to provide benefits.

What happens at the table
Not the rules. The experience.
Setup with three layers
You set up the base game, add the data centers, arrange the information cities. The table is fuller. Someone asks "do we really need all this?". Yes, you do. The first turn is slow: everyone reads the new cards.
First data productions
Someone plays the first card that produces data discs. The light bulb goes on: "ah, so I use these for data centers". The mental race begins: who gets to which building first. Plans are already being made three turns ahead.
Strategic bifurcation
Half the table focuses on information cities, the other half on the old production engine. Data centers go quickly. Those who waited are caught off guard: good spaces are occupied, discs are scarce.
The bottleneck
Turn 8-9: data discs become the bottleneck. You want them to activate data centers, to build information cities, to buy advanced cards. They are never enough. Someone gives up on an entire path.
Stratified final scoring
End of game: count base game points, then add data centers, then information cities, then cross multipliers. The winner is the one who best balanced the three layers. The difference is often 5-8 points, not twenty.

Three things to keep in mind
Not the first expansion to open
If you haven't mastered the base game yet, Data Era will overwhelm you. Data discs intertwine with everything: production, construction, scoring. You need to have played UC at least 4-5 times before adding this layer. Otherwise, you'll spend half the game rereading cards instead of playing.
Extends play time (especially setup)
Setup gains 10-15 minutes. Actual gameplay extends less (5-10 minutes), but the first few times, analysis paralysis hits hard: too many options, too many paths, too many "what if instead...". If your group already has downtime issues with base UC, this expansion worsens them.
Compatible with New Discoveries, but crowded table
You can combine Data Era with the first expansion. The rules foresee it and it works. But the table becomes a mosaic of tiles, cards, tokens. It requires physical space (large table) and mental space (high concentration). Not for relaxed evenings.
🏆Victory and defeatWhat the end rewards▼
How it ends
How to win
Underwater Cities ends after a fixed number of eras. Data Era adds new ways to score points, but does not change the end game condition.
Victory
- Points from built and activated data centers (some give end-game multipliers)
- Points from information cities connected to the network
- Points from the classic UC path (metropolises, production, special cards) which continues to function
Defeat (or falling behind)
- You invested too much in one path (only data or only production) and others overtook you by balancing
- You built data centers without having discs to activate them: wasted points
- You completely ignored the new components and the old engine was not enough to compete
Data Era is not for everyone. But if Underwater Cities has gripped you and you are looking for more strategic depth, this expansion provides it without distorting the game.

Frequently Asked Questions
FAQ about Underwater Cities: Data Era
Do I need the base game to play Data Era?
Yes, it's mandatory. Data Era is an expansion, not a standalone game. It requires Underwater Cities base to function. You can also combine it with New Discoveries (first expansion), but the base game is essential.
Is it compatible with New Discoveries?
Yes. The rulebook provides integration rules between the two expansions. It increases complexity and variety, but requires a lot of table space and further extends play time. Recommended only for experienced groups seeking maximum depth.
What mechanics does Underwater Cities: Data Era use?
It retains the card-driven worker placement of the base game. It adds management of a new resource (data discs), construction of specialized buildings (data centers), and tableau building with information cities. The hand management and income system remains central.
Do the upgraded components replace those of the base game?
Yes, they are designed for that. Delicious Games has included upgraded tokens and tiles that can be used with the base game and with New Discoveries. It's not mandatory to use them, but they improve readability and overall material quality. A welcome upgrade.
Is it available in Italian?
No. The edition sold on FroGames is in English. The game has a lot of text on the cards, so a good understanding of the language is required. There are no official or established fan-made Italian translations currently available.
