Unfold the illustrated poster, assemble the physical artifact, re-read the poem. The answer is there, hidden in the folds of a dream that is not your own. And when you finally write it down, you understand what it truly meant.
WHAT IT IS ABOUT
A dreamlike escape room where you interpret other people's dreams
Adrift is the new puzzletale by Rita Orlov for PostCurious (the same team behind The Tale of Ord), with ethereal illustrations by Amelia Leonards. Published in 2022, it brings to the table a hybrid experience of escape room, storytelling, and physical puzzling: the player takes on the role of an expert dream interpreter called upon to help someone decipher messages received through the subconscious.
Open the box and you'll find four independent sections, each dedicated to an elemental spirit (Sky, Earth, Water, Forest). Each section contains three sequential puzzles told through poems, illustrated posters, and a physical artifact to assemble. There is no forced order: choose the dream to interpret, build the artifact, look for connections between symbols and images until you derive a solution phrase that unlocks the hidden meaning.
What they say abroad
An intimate experience that transforms puzzling into visual poetry. Each spirit is a world unto itself.

Adrift: A Puzzletale
Designed to be played solo: personal reflection works perfectly with the meditative pace of the game. Cooperative play adds discussion and brainstorming, but the solo experience is complete and perhaps even more intimate.
What's in the box
The four spirits and their artifacts
Spirit of the Sky
Aerial poems, illustrations of clouds and wind. The artifact to build evokes lightness, and the first puzzle asks you to look at the world from above.
Spirit of the Earth
Rooted symbols, deep ocher and green colors. The physical artifact becomes a key to hidden connections between natural elements and growth.
Spirit of Water
Fluidity in forms and verses. The illustrated poster plays with reflections and transparencies; the artifact is assembled following symbolic currents and tides.
Spirit of the Forest
Intertwined branches, secrets whispered among the foliage. The puzzles require following non-linear paths and seeing the forest beyond individual trees.

The riddle-solving cycle
Each section contains three sequential riddles. There are no turns: collaborate freely until you find the solution.
Read the poem associated with the current riddle and study the illustrated poster. Look for symbols, keywords, recurring visual patterns.
If the riddle includes a physical artifact to build, assemble it following the instructions or your intuition. The shape of the artifact is an integral part of the solution.
Mentally (or physically) overlay the different layers: text, image, artifact. Look for correspondences, hidden numbers, symbolic paths that emerge from the intersection.
When all the clues converge, deduce the written solution phrase. Check the answer and, if correct, move on to the next riddle or next section.

What happens at the table
Not the rules. The experience.
Choosing the spirit
Open the box and look at the four sealed envelopes. Someone suggests starting with Water, someone else wants Sky. Choose by feeling, there is no correct order. Open the first envelope and find a poem, a rolled-up poster, and an envelope with mysterious components.
First riddle
Read the poem aloud. Lay out the poster: the illustration is beautiful but cryptic. Look at the first clues and start to draw connections between words and images. Someone jots down hypotheses, someone rotates the sheet looking for different perspectives.
Assembling the artifact
Open the envelope of physical components. There are pieces to assemble, sheets to fold, perhaps a 3D object to build. Building it is part of the solution: the very shape of the artifact becomes a key to interpreting the mystery hidden in the dream.
The solution emerges
After attempts, revisiting the poem, mental overlays between artifact and poster, someone says a word that makes everything click. The solution phrase is formed. You write it down, check the answer: it's correct. There's a moment of satisfied silence.
End of the spirit
Close the section, put the built artifact back in its envelope. You know you can open another spirit immediately or stop here. The dream has been interpreted, the message deciphered. You are left with the feeling of having read something deeper than a simple riddle.
🐸What to know beforehandThree honest things, from friends▼
What to know beforehand
Three things to keep in mind
The four sections are independent and can be solved in any order. There isn't a single narrative connecting them: they are four separate dreams. If you're looking for a continuous narrative arc like in a traditional escape room, you won't find it here. It's a stylistic choice, not a flaw, but it's important to know.
Adrift requires lateral thinking and visual sensitivity more than pure logic or obscure general knowledge. If your group expects complex ciphers or calculations, they might feel out of their depth. The riddles are poetic and symbolic, not cryptographic.
Once solved, Adrift is finished. You cannot replay the sections because you already know the solutions. You can lend or resell it, but its value lies in the one-time experience. 180 total minutes for about €50: evaluate if the ratio convinces you before buying it.
🏆Victory and defeatWhat the ending rewards▼
How it ends
How to win and how to conclude
There is no defeat: Adrift is an experience to complete, not a challenge to beat.
Completion
- Solve the three sequential riddles of an elemental section
- Correctly derive the final solution phrase that interprets the dream
- Complete all four sections to finish the entire experience (optional, you can stop earlier)
Stuck (not eliminated)
- Get stuck on a riddle without finding connections between the clues
- Consult the gradual hints provided in the game (integrated hint system)
- In case of a complete block, you can pause and resume at another time: the material remains as is
Adrift is a puzzletale that chooses contemplation instead of thrill, transforming riddles into a poetic and tactile gesture. Not for everyone, but unforgettable for those who seek this.

Frequently Asked Questions
FAQ about Adrift: A Puzzletale
What mechanics does Adrift: A Puzzletale use?
It is a narrative cooperative puzzle based on deduction, pattern recognition, and physical assembly. There are no traditional tabletop mechanics (no dice, playing cards, or turns): you solve puzzles through connections between texts, illustrations, and artifacts to build. The system is like tabletop escape rooms, but with a more contemplative and less thriller-like approach.
Can I play Adrift multiple times?
No. Once the riddles are solved, you know the solutions and the experience is concluded. Adrift is designed as a one-time experience, like a book or a movie: you can lend, resell, or give it as a gift, but you cannot replay the sections yourself with the same satisfaction.
Does it require specific knowledge or obscure general culture?
No. The riddles require lateral thinking and observation more than encyclopedic knowledge. There are no history, Latin, or advanced cryptography questions. If you can read visual symbols, connect metaphors, and reason by association, you have everything you need. The game includes a gradual hint system if you get stuck.
How many people is it best played with?
It works great solo (intimate and meditative experience) and well with 2-3 players (more heads for brainstorming). With 4 players, it can happen that someone remains more passive if the group is unbalanced. The ideal is 1-2 people for those seeking concentration, 3 for those who want discussion without overcrowding.
Is it available in Italian?
No, this edition is in English. The poems and riddle texts are in the original language. A good understanding of written English is needed to grasp poetic nuances and double meanings: the experience loses a lot with improvised translations. There are currently no official localized editions.
The people behind the game
Who invented it, who designed it, who publishes it — and what else they've done.
Adrift: A Puzzletale is a narrative tabletop escape room for 1-4 players (90-180 minutes, ages 14+) by Rita Orlov and published by PostCurious. The game features four independent sections dedicated to elemental spirits (Sky, Earth, Water, Forest), each with three sequential riddles told through poems, illustrated posters, and physical artifacts to assemble. The central mechanic is cooperative deduction: players look for symbolic connections between texts, images, and artifacts to derive solution phrases that interpret others' dreams. Adrift works perfectly solo (5/5 rating for solo mode) and stands out for its meditative tone and poetic approach to riddles, far from the thrill of traditional escape rooms. 🐸 HOW TO PLAY
A journey into dreams. In Adrift, you take on the role of a dream interpreter, an explorer of the subconscious who must make sense of cryptic and fragmented messages. It's not a simple puzzle, but a story to be lived, made of symbols, poetry, and small secrets to be discovered.
Four spirits, four paths. The game is divided into four parts, each linked to a natural element: Sky, Earth, Water, and Forest. You can tackle them in any order you choose, choosing the path that most inspires you, as if you were composing your own personal dream.
Poetry, images, and objects. Each section contains three puzzles in sequence: a poem hiding clues between the verses, an illustrated poster full of details to decipher, and a physical object to assemble or manipulate to unlock the solution. Each element intertwines with the others, transforming the game board into a dreamlike laboratory.
Between logic and emotion. It's not enough to solve the puzzles: you also have to interpret. Adrift forces you to observe, connect, and intuit, as if you were reading someone else's dreams. Each answer is a small revelation that brings you a step closer to the heart of the mystery.
The final awakening. When you've completed all four paths, the sentences you found come together into a single vision. The puzzle is closed, but what remains is the experience: a poetic journey that blends puzzles, art, and storytelling in a dream you won't want to forget. 🌙
