Hanami is a new reinterpretation of Samurai , one of Reiner Knizia 's most beloved abstract games. This version completely reimagines the game's aesthetic and atmosphere, setting it during the blossoming season in Japanese parks.
Players place their picnic tiles on a hexagonal map to conquer the most coveted activities : sakura-watching, eating onigiri, or relaxing under the lanterns. Each tile has a strategic value and a preferred activity, and the challenge is to surround and dominate the tokens to win the crowd's favor.
With two maps (Nihon and Tokyo), two game modes , special abilities , and an out-of-this-world aesthetic , Hanami is a perfect blend of tradition and innovation. This edition surprised us with the incredible quality of the materials : from the double-sided board to the elegantly illustrated rigid cards , up to the Bento Bags that hold each element like a little treasure waiting to be discovered.
We played both maps: Nihon mode revives classic Knizia in all its abstract perfection; Tokyo mode , on the other hand, adds fresh dynamics, special abilities and new strategies that make it even more long-lasting.
A game that will captivate abstract purists, but will also win over those seeking an accessible introduction to this world. Hanami is one of those titles you stop to look at, even when you're not playing . And it stays with you, like spring.
