Spot kangaroos, collect souvenirs, fill your travel diary. When the holiday ends, whoever has seen and done the most wins. You beauty!
What it's about
A road trip vacation across Australia
Roadtrip Australia is the 2026 Pocket reissue of Boomerang: Australia, Scott Almes' "draft & write" game with illustrations by Kerri Aitken. You tour the continent trying to see and do as much as possible before your vacation ends.
By spotting endemic animals, collecting Australiana items, and engaging in other tourist activities, you accumulate points. Each round you draw cards, pass them to your neighbors, and mark your achievements on your score sheet: it's a mix of set collection and card drafting with the lightness of a roll-and-write.
At the end of the game, the best traveler wins. Roadtrip Australia is part of Grail Games' Pocket series: small box, light rules, quick 15-30 minute game.
The secret in two lines
You might just seem to be on holiday, but every card you pick is a card you take away from your opponent. The beauty lies in choosing what to see — and what not to let others see.
Roadtrip Australia's secret in one line
No dice, no waiting: choose, pass your hand, and mark. In half an hour you've crossed a continent and filled a travel diary.
From the game experience
Roadtrip Australia
What you do on holiday
Four ways to fill your travel diary
Draw and pass
Each round you choose one card from your hand and pass the rest to your neighbor. It's the core of the draft: take what you need or what you take away from others.
Spot the animals
Kangaroos, koalas and endemic wildlife: every sighting marked on the sheet is a growing set and a rising score.
Collect Australiana
Souvenirs and tourist activities — excursions, photos, swims — to collect in sets to multiply your holiday points.
Mark on the sheet
Each round you mark your achievements on the score sheet. At the end of the holiday, points are counted: the best traveler wins.
Half an hour, a handful of cards, and an entire continent to discover. In the end, someone will have seen Australia better than anyone else — and there will already be a desire to set off again.
A game in five moments
What happens at the table
Not the rules. The experience.
Departing for Australia
Suitcase packed, travel sheet in front of you. The vacation has just begun, and you have one goal: to see and do as much as possible before it ends. Everyone starts from the same point, but each already has their itinerary in mind.
The first hand of cards
Seven cards in hand. You choose one, keep it, and pass the rest to your neighbor. The one you take is also the one you deny them: every choice is a small calculation between what you want and what you don't want to give away.
A kangaroo on the horizon
You spot wildlife, mark an activity, collect a souvenir. On your sheet, spaces fill up and sets grow. This is when your journey takes shape, line by line.
The tourist's dilemma
That card would complete one of your sets... but your opponent also needs it. Do you take it for yourself or deny it to them? Every round, this opportunity cost keeps everyone engaged, with the smile of someone on vacation.
Vacation ends, points are tallied
The vacation ends and the sheets are compared. Animals, activities, souvenirs, and visited locations become points. The best traveler wins — and then, inevitably, a resounding "You beauty!" rings out.
How to play
The flow of each round
Few actions that repeat round after round. You learn in minutes and play all together, with no downtime.
Choose a card from your hand, place it in front of you, and pass the others to your neighbor. Repeat until cards run out.
The cards you collect give you spotted animals, completed activities, and pieces of Australiana to combine into sets.
Mark your achievements on the score sheet. The more sets you complete and objectives you tick off, the more points you accumulate.
After the last round, sum the points from all categories: the one who traveled best wins the game.
Why it works
Six things that make a difference
The draft & write
The best of two worlds: the choice of card drafting and the satisfaction of flip-and-write. No dice, everything in your hands.
Many ways to score points
Animals, activities, souvenirs, visited locations: each game you can pursue a different path to victory.
The opportunity cost
Every card you take is one you deny others. A simple choice that hides surprisingly juicy decisions.
Quick games
15-30 minutes from start to finish, with simultaneous play: little waiting, lots of playing.
Pocket format
Part of Grail Games' Pocket series: small box, ready for your suitcase. The travel game about travel.
Bright Australia
Kerri Aitken's illustrations and Scott Almes' design give the table a sunny, postcard-like feel.
How to win
The best traveler wins
No elimination: everyone travels until the last card. What makes the difference is how much you've seen and done along the way.
Victory
- At the end of the game, points from all categories are summed
- Spotted animals, activities, souvenirs, and visited locations
- Whoever scored the most is the best traveler
The art of scoring
- It's not enough to accumulate: sets are worth more if completed
- Denying a card to an opponent can be as valuable as taking it
- Those who don't win stay on the journey until the end — and ask for an encore
Roadtrip Australia puts an entire continent in a pocket-sized box. It's easy to learn, takes half an hour to play — and rarely stops at just one vacation.
Frequently asked questions
FAQ about Roadtrip Australia
Is it just another roll-and-write by a different name?
No. Roadtrip Australia is a "draft & write": you don't roll dice hoping for luck, but you choose cards through drafting and then mark the results on your sheet. You always have control over what you collect — the drafting provides the strategic flavor, not chance.
With little interaction, isn't it just a solo game played with others?
The interaction is gentle but present: by passing hands, you see what others are collecting and can decide to take a card specifically to deny it to them. It's a relaxed competitive game, designed for those who want to optimize their own journey rather than attack opponents.
What's the difference between this and Boomerang: Australia?
Roadtrip Australia is the 2026 pocket re-edition of Boomerang: Australia, the same "draft & write" by Scott Almes with illustrations by Kerri Aitken. The name, graphic design, and pocket format change; the beloved gameplay experience of the series remains the same.
Is it suitable for families and casual gamers?
Yes, that's one of its strong points. The rules are explained in minutes, the theme is light and bright, and simultaneous play keeps everyone engaged. It works very well as a gateway game or a family game for a quick play.
Do I need to know English or French to play?
The edition is in English and French. Much of the game is iconographic — symbols on cards and the score sheet — but keep in mind that texts and rulebooks are in these two languages.
What is the Grail Games Pocket series?
It's Grail Games' line of small card and board games, designed to fit in a pocket-sized box and come at an affordable price. Roadtrip Australia is part of it, bringing the travel "draft & write" in a compact format.
