What it's about
The treasure hunt that turns Maracaibo into a race
Pirates of Maracaibo: Bermuda Triangle is the second full expansion for the game by Ryan Hendrickson, Florian Kumschier, and Alexander Pfister. The waters of the Bermuda Triangle are feared: storms make navigation impossible and legends speak of enormous creatures lurking. But they also tell of legendary treasures hidden there — and now it's a race to find them.
The heart of the expansion is the Treasure Hunt module: complete four assignments to collect all the pieces of the treasure map. The first captain to reassemble the map finds the treasure and wins. You continue to sail the Caribbean as in Maracaibo, but now the goal is not to accumulate points: it's to be first.
In the box, you'll also find a new Location card, the Kraken, and new Tier I and Tier II Improvement cards to mix with the base deck for more variety, plus a dedicated solo scenario card. Many cards were born from contributions by fans around the world.
FroGames' Take
The Treasure Hunt takes a pure optimization Euro and puts a timer on it: it's no longer just about playing well, it's about being first.
The secret of Bermuda Triangle in one line
The Kraken card and new Improvements are mixed with the base deck: each game starts from a different Triangle.
From the gaming experience
Pirates of Maracaibo: Bermuda Triangle
Includes a new "Bermuda Triangle" scenario card that updates and enhances the solo experience of the base game. The solo experience is solid and complete — but the Treasure Hunt module, designed as a race, shines best when you have real opponents trying to beat your treasure map.
What the expansion adds
Four new features that change the course
Treasure Hunt Module
Transforms Maracaibo into a race: complete four assignments to collect the pieces of the treasure map. The first to reassemble it wins.
The Kraken Card
A new Location card that you mix with those from the base game, changing the setup and options for each game.
New Improvement Cards
Tier I and Tier II cards to add to the base deck for more variety and new combos. New icons are explained in the glossary.
Improved Solo Mode
A new dedicated scenario card updates and enhances the solo experience of the base game.
In an hour, you'll know if you completed the map first or lost the treasure by just one assignment. In the Triangle, second place doesn't count.

A game in five moments
What happens at the table
Not the rules. The experience.
Entering the Triangle
You shuffle the new Improvement cards and the Kraken card into the base deck, then place the Treasure Hunt module. Everyone immediately understands that this time it's not about who scores the most points. It's about who finishes first.
The first legs
Everyone sails the Caribbean at their own pace, plays cards, builds the route to the first map assignment. Someone gets off to a strong start and pulls ahead. The others start doing the math.
The race gets serious
The map pieces start coming together on the tables. Someone is one assignment ahead, someone else is chasing. Every card played now matters: it brings you closer to the treasure or makes you miss the decisive turn. No one is looking at their points anymore.
The turning point
The Kraken card or an Improvement card comes out and changes everything. Those who were behind catch up, those who were ahead speed up. The balance shifts in a single turn — and it's the moment you'll be talking about at the end of the evening.
The treasure, finally
Last round of the table. A captain completes the fourth assignment and reassembles the map: finds the treasure and wins. The others are only one assignment away. And someone is already asking for a rematch.
How to play
The flow with the Treasure Hunt module
You play Maracaibo as you know it, but with a new objective. Turns proceed clockwise and each captain navigates at their own pace.
Choose how far to advance through the Caribbean. Your route is yours alone: you decide when to push and when to stop to gather what you need.
Perform the action of the space where you stop and use your multipurpose cards — including the new Tier I and II Improvements — to build your advantage.
Complete the assignments required by the module to earn the pieces of the treasure map. Each assignment is an objective to plan along your route.
Be the first to complete all four assignments and reassemble the map: you find the treasure and win the game. Those who arrive later are left empty-handed.
Why it's worth it
Six things that change Maracaibo
A race, not a points competition
The Treasure Hunt module changes the victory condition: the first to complete the treasure map wins, not the one who accumulates the most points. It changes every tactical decision.
The map in four assignments
To find the treasure, you must complete four assignments and collect their pieces. Each assignment is an objective to integrate into your Caribbean navigation.
The Kraken card
A new Location card shuffles into the base cards and changes the setup of each game, adding an additional threat to the waters of the Triangle.
New Improvement cards
Tier I and Tier II cards to combine with the base deck for more variety and new combos. The pool of options changes every time, and with it the best strategy.
Cards created by fans
Many cards in this expansion come from contributions by fans worldwide. It's Maracaibo grown with its community, not just a simple add-on.
Solo improved
A new "Bermuda Triangle" scenario card updates and enhances the solo mode of the base game, for those who want to challenge the Triangle even alone.
How it ends
How to win and how to come up short
There's only one treasure in the Triangle. And second place here is worthless.
Victory
- Be the first to complete all four assignments and reassemble the treasure map
- Use the right Improvement cards to arrive before the other captains
- In solo mode: complete the "Bermuda Triangle" scenario
Defeat
- An opponent completes the map before you: the race is over
- You fall behind by one assignment when the treasure is claimed
- You make the wrong moves while others advance quickly
If Maracaibo had become an optimization solitaire, the Treasure Hunt module puts everyone back on the same course — and gives the table something to argue about again.
Frequently Asked Questions
FAQ about Pirates of Maracaibo: Bermuda Triangle
Does it require the base game? Isn't it one expansion too many?
Yes, it absolutely requires Pirates of Maracaibo to be played — it's not standalone. And no, it's not filler: the Treasure Hunt module changes the game's victory condition, turning it into a race. It doesn't just add cards; it changes the objective.
Does it really transform Maracaibo or is it just another small deck?
It transforms it. With the Treasure Hunt module, the winner is not the one who scores the most points, but the first to complete four assignments and reassemble the treasure map. The Kraken card and new Improvements add variety to the setup. It's the same Caribbean route, but played with a race mindset.
How much complexity does it add compared to the base game?
Little in terms of rules. The new icons on the Improvement and Location cards are explained in the glossary, and if you already know Maracaibo, you'll integrate the expansion effortlessly. The difficulty increases due to the direct competition of the race, not obscure rules.
Does it combine with other Maracaibo expansions?
It is designed to integrate with the base game by mixing its cards with existing ones. Generally, it can be combined with other Maracaibo content; as always with modules, it's advisable to check that you're not introducing duplicate cards into the setup.
Does it work solo?
Yes. The expansion includes a new dedicated scenario card that updates the base game's solo mode. It works well, but the Treasure Hunt module is a race: it performs better against real opponents trying to beat your treasure map to the finish.
Is it available in Italian?
No, this edition is in English: cards and rule sheet are in English. A good understanding of the language is required, as the cards contain text and icons to be read during the game.
