The Bard of FroGames sings of rivalry, power and prestige in the 16th century

FroGames

In the heart of Northern Germany, amid the smoke of port markets and the tolling of church bells, two cities vie for supremacy . And it's not just a question of trade or borders: it's a question of honor, prestige, and history .

When Altona raised the
head, Hamburg tightened
the fists.
Thus the legend was born.
Thus began the game

What is Rival Cities about?

Rival Cities is a board game for two players that takes you to the heart of the 16th century , where the rapid growth of the village of Altona threatens the economic, cultural, and political primacy of greater Hamburg . A challenge between two rising powers, risking everything: factories, ships, courts, prestige . In this game, you don't just build a production engine, but enter a true dance of moves and countermoves , where every choice can be a step forward... or a provocation.

Two cities. Two minds. One destiny to rewrite.

The Mechanics: One Pen, One Plan, One Victory

At the heart of the game is an elegant yet sharp system: the inkwell advances on the board, determining which action will be available each turn. Each turn requires optimization and foresight :

  • Produce goods and manage resources
  • Buy ships and build factories
  • Bringing lawsuits to hinder the opponent
  • Accumulate prestige and get stars to achieve victory

The uniqueness of Rival Cities lies in its constant interaction: every action you take could benefit or hinder your opponent's. An impulsive move could prove fatal. A calculated move... revolutionary.

A historic duel for expert minds

Don't let the two-player format fool you: Rival Cities is a deep game , designed for those who enjoy planning, adapting, and responding under pressure . Perfect for:

  • ⚖️ Experienced players and lovers of direct interaction
  • 👁‍🗨️ Who wants a historical and tense game from start to finish
  • 💼 Fans of Beer & Bread and Hansa Teutonica

In Rival Cities it's not enough
produce. You have to think
like a merchant... and
fight like a politician.

A dive into the setting

Every element of the game tells the story of the rivalry between these two cities. The actions, the illustrations, the victory conditions: everything evokes an elegant yet ruthless conflict , like a chess game between bourgeoisie of the time. History isn't just a backdrop: it's the driving force. Playing Rival Cities means reliving a real tension , made up of progress, politics, trade, and influence.

History is written by the victors... but here you play it.

Strategy or narrative? Both.

One of the magics of Rival Cities is the balance between mechanical elegance and implicit storytelling . There's no need for a detailed map or narrated events: every choice has thematic weight. Every move evokes a power maneuver, every turn a pivotal day in the history of one city striving to outshine the other. The inkwell isn't just a marker. It's the pen of history.

Is this the game for you?

If you love games where every turn can turn everything around , if you're looking for a duel title that's historical yet tense , tactical yet fluid , then Rival Cities is for you. If you like board games where mind beats luck , and the theme is felt in every choice, get ready to write your own page in the history of Hamburg and Altona.

In conclusion...

In a world where cities compete with factories and processes, with ports and trade, only one can emerge as Queen of the North . "Hamburg or Altona? The stars await you, strategist. But remember: glory, like prestige, cannot be bought. It is earned."

Hamburg or Altona?
The stars await you,
strategist. But remember: glory, like prestige, cannot be bought.
It is conquered.
