Four supernatural heroes. Unique decks. Clashes that never end how you expect.
What it's about
The world of the B.P.R.D. enters the Unmatched system
Unmatched is one of the most beloved skirmish systems of recent years: two or four players, each with a unique hero and a deck of cards built around their abilities, face off on a modular battlefield. Each hero plays completely differently. Asymmetry is at the heart of the game.
With Unmatched: Hellboy, Restoration Games brings four iconic characters from Mike Mignola's comic book to the system: Hellboy, Liz Sherman, Abe Sapien, and Baba Yaga. The box includes two new battlefields and cover art by Mignola himself. Each character has their own deck — each deck tells a different way to fight.
Combat is entirely card-driven: no dice, no random uncertainty for its own sake. When you attack or defend, you choose which card to play — and the value of that card determines the outcome. Moving makes you draw. Attacking makes you spend. The balance between these two actions is where all the tension of the game lies.
Every deck is a radically different playable character — the same move performed by Hellboy and Liz Sherman produces completely different results.
The secret of Unmatched in one line
The game lasts 20-40 minutes, but the decisions you make in the first few turns already determine who will win — time is of the essence from the start.
From the game experience
Unmatched: Hellboy
The four heroes
Who fights in this box
Hellboy
The son of the demon with the Right Hand of Doom. Direct contact, brute force, ability to take hits that would knock anyone else out.
Liz Sherman
Devastating pyrokinesis. Area control and ranged attacks. Her power can turn an entire clash around in a single well-played turn.
Abe Sapien
Amphibious B.P.R.D. agent. Resilient, precise, hard to eliminate. His deck rewards those who can manage the field long-term.
Baba Yaga
The most feared witch of Slavic folklore. Her deck is the most unpredictable in the set — she plays radically differently from any other Unmatched hero.
When the game ends, the question is already ready: now, shall we try with the other two heroes?

A game in five moments
What happens at the table
Not the rules. The experience.
Choosing your hero
Everyone chooses their character. You pick Hellboy — simple, direct, devastating at close range. Your opponent picks Baba Yaga and smiles. You don't know why yet, but you're about to find out.
The first attack
You play your first attack card. Your opponent blocks it with something you've never seen before. Your plans already change. Your hero's deck is teaching you how to fight — card by card.
Your hand empties
You've attacked too much. Your hand is almost empty. You need to move to draw, but moving means getting closer — or further away. Every action simultaneously opens and closes possibilities. The battlefield is small.
The combo you didn't expect
Your opponent plays a scheme card. Then another. Then attacks. You don't immediately understand what they just did — then you see it: three cards in sequence that combine perfectly. Your hero's health plummets. The table falls silent.
One hero stands
The game is over in 25 minutes. The loser is already looking at the other decks. The winner wants to try the character they haven't used yet. You don't put the box away — you start again with two different heroes.
How to play
The flow of each turn
Two actions per turn. Learn in five minutes, master in three games.
You have two actions per turn. You can maneuver (move your characters and draw a card), play a scheme (card with special effect), or attack a target within range.
Declare an attack by choosing a card from your deck. The defender responds with a defense card. The net attack value — reduced by defense — is the damage dealt to the target hero.
Each hero has melee or ranged capability. Your position on the board changes who you can hit and who can hit you. Moving is drawing, but it also means exposing yourself or getting closer to the enemy.
A hero is eliminated when their health points drop to zero. With 3-4 players, opponents are eliminated until only one remains. With 2 players, it's a direct duel: one hero against the other.
Why it's different
Six mechanics that make a difference
Total asymmetry, zero dice
Each hero has a unique deck designed to reflect their fighting style. No two decks are alike. And you never roll a die — combat is resolved only with the cards you choose to play.
Moving is drawing
Every time you maneuver, you draw a card. This creates a natural rhythm between aggression and defense — you can't stand still and wait because your hand empties. The battlefield is always moving.
Infinite combinations between sets
Unmatched: Hellboy combines with any other set in the series. Hellboy vs. Sherlock Holmes? Liz Sherman vs. Bruce Lee? The system is designed for this — each pairing is a new game.
Two battlefields included
The box includes two exclusive maps set in the B.P.R.D. world. The paths and zones on each map change which playstyle is rewarded — position and tactics change radically.
Artwork by Mike Mignola
The cover is an original work by Hellboy's creator. Not licensed illustration — the character's father specifically drew it for this set. The box itself is a collector's item.
20-40 minutes, then start again
A game doesn't exceed 40 minutes. Short enough to play three matches in an evening, intense enough to make you want to play again. The duration is part of the design — not a compromise.
How it ends
Only one hero remains standing
There are no secondary objectives, no points to accumulate. There is only one way to win — and one way to lose.
Victory
- Your hero is the last one standing with health points above zero
- In 3-4 players, eliminate all opponents before they eliminate you
- Sidekicks are eliminated separately — the main hero counts
Elimination
- The main hero reaches zero health points
- There are no saves or resurrections — when you're out, you're out
- But the game lasts less than 40 minutes: you won't wait long to start again
Unmatched: Hellboy brings one of the most iconic comic book franchises of the last thirty years into the system. Mignola cover, four asymmetric heroes, two exclusive maps.
Frequently asked questions
FAQ about Unmatched: Hellboy
Do you need to know Hellboy to play?
No. The decks are designed to reflect the characters so that you can understand who you're playing as from the very first turns — even without ever having read a comic. The lore is in the card details, not the rules. Those who know Hellboy will recognize every ability; those who don't will learn the character by playing.
Does it play well with two players? Isn't more needed?
The two-player duel is the format Unmatched was designed for — and where the system shines brightest. With 3-4 players, interaction increases and informal coalition dynamics emerge, but the tactical clarity of a head-to-head is incomparable. Both experiences are valid and very different from each other.
Can it be mixed with other Unmatched sets?
Yes, and it's one of the system's strengths. Unmatched: Hellboy is compatible with all sets in the series — you can pit Hellboy against Sherlock Holmes, Liz Sherman against Bruce Lee, Baba Yaga against Medusa. Compatibility is a deliberate feature of the system, not a side effect.
How difficult is it to learn the rules?
The basic rules can be explained in less than ten minutes. Two actions per turn, combat resolved with cards, no dice. Complexity doesn't come from the rules — it comes from the asymmetry between the decks. Understanding how your hero works takes one or two games; mastering the interaction between characters is what keeps the game fresh over time.
Is this set a good entry point for those new to Unmatched?
Yes, it's an excellent entry. Every Unmatched set is standalone — no other sets are needed to play. If you're a fan of Hellboy or Mignola's comics, this is the most natural starting point. If you want to start with a more "generic" set, Battle of Legends Vol. 1 is also a great entry point — then you can expand.
Is it available in Italian?
This is the English edition. The rules of Unmatched are simple and visual — the text on the cards is in English, but the language level is accessible. For those not comfortable with English, please note that each card has text to read during the game.
