You have three cards in hand. One you play as claws, one to increase population, the last one you keep as food. Your opponent's carnivore is watching you. You look at its size 3 body. Your species is size 2. A plan B is needed, immediately.

Ecosystems that change every time you open the box
Dominic Crapuchettes completely rewrote Evolution, his 2014 blockbuster, to make it more accessible, strategically deep, and modular. Nature stems from Crapuchettes' experience as a professional Magic player and his obsession with adaptive systems. The naturalistic illustrations by Catherine Hamilton, Alyssa McCarthy, and Nina Pommelin accompany a game that simulates food chains, predation, and natural selection without ever losing fluidity.
Your goal is to keep your populations alive through 4 rounds of adaptation and hunting. You play cards to evolve traits (Fast to escape, Clawed to hunt, Tusked to gather food), increase size and number, and save resources. Then comes the nutrition phase: food is always scarce, predators are hungry, and those who don't eat enough lose population. Each population that survives at the end of the round is worth 1 point. The player who has kept the most creatures alive wins.

The game includes official solo rules with an automa system that simulates opponents with different strategies. The experience is complete and maintains the tension of the nutrition phase, but obviously loses the psychological reading of opponents and the political dynamics of multiplayer (who to attack, when to bluff). Excellent for exploring modules and testing trait combos.

Four pillars of adaptation
Trait Cards
Each card can be played in 4 ways: as an evolutionary trait (Clawed, Fast, Tusked...), to increase population, to increase size, or kept as food. Hand management is everything: choosing what to sacrifice and what to keep.
Watering Hole
Shared food. All players contribute face-down cards that become plant food. You can bluff, poison (with some modules), or simply miscalculate. When it runs out, herbivores fast.
Modules
The heart of replayability. Flight adds flying traits and reduces conflicts. Jurassic brings dinosaurs and aggression. Arctic Tundra introduces cold as a threat. 6 modules + 4 mini-modules = over 700 unique setups.
Species Boards
Personal tableau where you build your species. Each species has size (defense against predators), population (how many mouths to feed), and traits (abilities). Species can go extinct: it's part of the game.
