FroGames — Moments You'll Remember
A deck of cards. All of human history. And the game you won't forget.
What it's about
From the Stone Age to the near future, in a deck of cards
Innovation is Carl Chudyk's masterpiece — a game without boards, without pawns, without dice. Just cards. Each represents a unique human innovation: from the Wheel to the Internet, from Printing to Artificial Intelligence. Each card has a different effect, and each effect can turn the game around.
Innovation: Ultimate is the definitive edition: it includes the base game updated to the fourth edition, five expansions (including the brand new The Unseen), the unreleased Age 11, and hundreds of cards with revamped design and balanced gameplay. One box for everything.
The mechanic is elegant: you play cards from your tableau, activate Dogma effects, accumulate visible icons that allow you to exploit others' moves — or prevent them from exploiting yours. You win by collecting Achievements or dominating the score. But between the two, all sorts of chaos happens.
What they say abroad

Innovation: Ultimate
What you control
Your civilization tableau
5-color Tableau
Your play space — five columns of stacked inventions, where only the top card counts for effects. Every "meld" choice is a civilization decision.
Dogma Effects
You activate a card and its effect applies to everyone — but only to those with enough icons of the same type. Sharing your advantage can be a boomerang.
Achievements to conquer
Points and cards of a specific age to claim an Achievement. Once taken, it's yours forever. Collect enough and civilization is yours.
5 expansions included
Echoes, Figures, Cities, Artifacts, The Unseen — each adds its own mechanics. You can add one at a time, starting from the base game.
In a few hours, someone will still be staring at their board wondering how they lost the game they were dominating. It always happens with Innovation.

A game in five moments
What happens at the table
Not the rules. The experience.
Everyone in the Stone Age, no idea what's about to happen
You have two cards in hand. An invention on your tableau. You're looking at the others and you still don't understand what they're building. The game seems simple. It's not.
Someone activates a Dogma effect and the table changes
The player to your left uses Printing. They have more icons than you, so your score drops. But wait — you also have those icons, so you share the positive effect. You're gaining from their move. They realize it. They get angry.
You are in the Steam Age. Someone is already in the Information Age.
The disparity of ages is brutal. Those ahead activate devastating effects, those behind struggle to keep up. Splay, icon accumulation, Achievements hanging in the balance. Every die is weighted. Breathing shortens.
The combo no one will forget
Three cards, two Dogma effects, a stolen Achievement in the span of a single turn. The player who was winning has now lost everything. The table is silent. Someone laughs, someone sighs. That sequence is talked about for months.
Someone wins. No one understands exactly why.
The game ends unexpectedly — a special Achievement, an effect you didn't see coming. The winner celebrates. The others are already asking when they can play again. This is Innovation.
How to play
The flow of each turn
Two actions per turn, four possible types. You learn in twenty minutes, master in three games — and still discover something new by the tenth.
You draw from the age equal to your most advanced card. If that age is exhausted, you move to the next. Drawing from an empty Age 11 ends the game.
Place a card from your hand onto your tableau in the corresponding color. The new card covers the old — you might lose valuable icons. Every choice matters.
Choose one of your top cards and activate its effect. Those with enough icons of the same type share the bonus — or suffer the demand. Key move of the game.
If your score and age meet the requirements, you can claim an Achievement. Get enough Achievements and you win. But beware — others won't stand by idly.
Why it's different from others
Six mechanics that make a difference
No two cards are alike
Hundreds of cards, each with a unique and thematic effect. From the Arch to Democracy, from Writing to the Internet — every innovation changes the way you play.
Dogma effects that involve everyone
When you activate a card, those with the right icons share the bonus — or those with fewer suffer the demand. Every move is a calculation of whom you help and whom you penalize.
Splay — the art of fanning out piles
Fanning out a pile of cards exposes new icons and changes your parameters. Splaying at the right moment can multiply your strength — or expose a vulnerability.
11 ages of human history
From the Stone Age to the near future — with the unprecedented Age 11 included only in the Ultimate. Advanced ages are exponentially more powerful: falling behind is costly.
5 modular expansions
Echoes, Figures, Cities, Artifacts, The Unseen — they are added one at a time after mastering the base game. Each expansion adds a new dimension to the game.
A million online games
Innovation is the most played board game online in the world. Years of playtesting on the best digital engines have refined every card. This edition is the result of that process.
How it ends
Three ways to win, one way to lose everything
In Innovation, there is no single path to victory. You can aim for Achievements, dominate the score, or await the effect of a card that overturns everything.
Victory
- Accumulate the required number of Achievements (varies with players and expansions)
- Or have the highest score if someone tries to draw beyond Age 11
- Or win thanks to a card's special effect — immediate and unpredictable
Defeat
- Lose all points or Achievements due to opposing Demand effects
- Fall too far behind in ages and can no longer compete with others' Dogmas
- No redrawing — but the next game starts immediately after
Innovation: Ultimate is the most acclaimed civilization game by expert players in recent years. Deep without being complicated, chaotic without being random.
Frequently asked questions
FAQ about Innovation: Ultimate
What makes Innovation different from other civilization games?
There are no boards, pawns, or dice. Everything happens through cards with unique effects, direct interaction via Dogmas, and visible icons that determine who shares or suffers each effect. It's a civilization game that plays in 30-60 minutes with a deck of cards — and each game tells a completely different story.
Is Ultimate worth it compared to the original base edition?
Yes, if you want everything in one box. The Ultimate includes the base game updated to the fourth edition — with redesigned cards, more legible text, and refined balancing — plus five complete expansions and the unprecedented Age 11. If you already have older editions, the Ultimate is a complete overhaul. If you're starting from scratch, it's the best way to begin.
Is it suitable for those who have never played Innovation?
The base game can be learned in about 20 minutes, and the first few games flow naturally, but the true depth emerges after three or four games. It is recommended to start with 2-3 players without expansions. Expansions are added one at a time — and the manual explicitly states this.
How many players does it work best with?
With 2-3 players, the experience is more tactical and controllable — ideal for learning the game. With 4-5, chaos increases exponentially: interactions multiply, plans are disrupted more often, but the experience is more unpredictable and spectacular. Designers recommend starting with 2-3.
How much does luck weigh in Innovation?
Drawing the right cards at the right time makes a difference, but the choices of what to play, when to activate Dogmas, and how to build your tableau determine much more. Chaos is real — but it's a chaos where decisions matter. The better player wins more often, though not always.
Is it available in Italian?
This is the English edition. The cards have descriptive text in English, which is necessary to understand the effects. It is not a language-independent game: a basic understanding of written English or a reference player who can translate the first few games is required.
