HOW TO PLAYHABITATS

Building a natural park, interlocking landscapes, and satisfying the animals' needs.

1) Each player builds his own nature park, one animal at a time

Start with a membership cardEntranceand from there you start expanding your park by addinganimals and landscapes.

Each tile depicts an animal and a main habitat type (meadow, bush, rock, lake), which becomes a new section of your park.

2) The animal market moves with you: choose the tile in front, on the left or on the right

There is an animal weaving trail in the market.

On your turntake the tile directly in front, left, or right of your meeple-ranger, then move the ranger into the newly vacated empty space.

Finally, fill the space you started from by drawing a new tile.

The market is constantly evolving and changing shape.

3) Each animal has specific requirements: careful positioning is required

A zebra wantslarge lawn and nearby water; a bat requiresrock + bush + water; a crocodile wantsalmost just water.

When you place an animal in your park, you musttry to meet his requirementsvia adjacent tiles.

The bigger the park grows, the more complex it becomes to fit everything in without creating “dissatisfied” animals.

4) Not just animals: you can build entrance roads, paths and observation towers

In addition to habitats, you can add:

new entrance roads, which improve flexibility and scoring;

trek spots, which reward environmental variations;

observation towers, which generate points based on visibility.

Each tile chosen can open up new strategies.

5) Match in 3 seasons: seasonal objectives and final score

They playthree seasons, each from6–9 turnsdepending on the number of players.

At the end of each season, the following are awarded:bonus for those who best meet the seasonal objective.

At the end of the game each animal gives pointsonly if its requirements are completedWhoever scores the most points wins.

A wild world to be built tile by tile… and decision by decision.

You are not placing animals.
You're trying to reconcile desires that never quite match.

The zebra asks for meadows and water, the bat wants rocks, bushes and more water, the crocodile almost exclusively demands lakes… and every new animal you add changes the geography of your park. That's where you start to feel it: you're not composing a map, you're taming an ecosystem.

Your ranger moves around the market, collects tiles, opens up possibilities… and creates problems. Each placement is a choice that requires courage and precision: helping one animal means making another more difficult, and perfection always seems one step away from crumbling.

Then comes the next season, with new goals to pursue and new compromises to make. And you understand that Habitats doesn't reward you because you "build well," but because you think like a true guardian of nature.

Every tile you add is a yes… and three maybes.

Habitats is a tile-placement board game for 1–5 players, designed by Corné van Moorsel and published by Allplay. Each player builds a natural park without cages, adding animals with specific needs: water, grass, rocks or bushes. The movement of meeples in the central market determines which tiles you gain and which you leave for others, creating an elegant and unpredictable system of spatial choices.

The game unfolds over three seasons, each with different objectives and 6–9 new tiles that change the pace of the park. At the end of the game, each animal only generates points if its habitat is satisfied, turning the tableau into a complex, deep and highly replayable puzzle.
