The FroGames Card
You hold a card in your hand. You play it downstream and decide the course of the river, or you tuck it under a bank and lose control of the water. Every choice is a sacrifice. Every sacrifice is a point for the other player.
WHAT IT'S ABOUT
A river that grows card by card, two players deciding where the current flows
Designed by Sébastien Bernier-Wong and Daniel Mously (both making their debut), Downstream is an abstract game published by Firestarter Games in 2022. The theme is just a visual pretext: a river ecosystem taking shape piece by piece. But underneath, it's a spatial puzzle where each card counts twice.
Each turn you play a card: you can extend it downstream (you lengthen the river and activate effects on both banks) or tuck it under an existing bank (you enrich your bank but give up control of the flow). The first to complete a set of asymmetric objectives wins. Games last 10-20 minutes, the system is immediate but constantly puts you in front of painful binary choices.
What they say abroad
Downstream is the debut of two designers who understood how elegance works: no card is wasted, every turn is a clear-cut choice.

The river you build
Four elements that decide the game
River cards
57 double-sided cards, each with a left and right bank. When you extend the river, you choose which side to activate. When you tuck it under an existing bank, that card counts for your patterns but no longer controls the flow.
Asymmetric objectives
Each player draws a random set of objectives (patterns to complete on their banks). The first to complete three wins. Objectives change each game: sometimes you want to group colors, other times you look for sequences.
Shared flow
The river flows in only one direction, from upstream to downstream. Every downstream extension activates all compatible cards on both banks: if your opponent has prepared their bank well, you give them free points.
Binary choice
Each turn: extend (control the river but also activate the other player) or enrich (build your patterns but give up control of the flow). There is no perfect move: decide what you need most at that moment.

How to play
The flow of each turn
Two possible actions, one choice to make, no downtime.
You have 3-4 cards in hand (depending on the game phase). You choose one and decide: either extend it downstream (add it to the river, choosing which side to activate) or tuck it under an existing bank of yours (add it to your pattern but it doesn't affect the flow).
The card you placed downstream activates all compatible symbols on both players' banks. If the opponent had prepared a bank with the correct symbols, they count and mark them. If you extended, you controlled the river but might have given away points.
Look at your three objectives (patterns to complete on your banks). If one is complete, you declare it and flip it over. First objective: you continue. Second: you are halfway. Third: you have won.
Draw a card from the common deck (if there are still cards) and pass. The other player plays. The turn lasts 10-15 seconds: Downstream has no downtime, only binary decisions repeated until the deck runs out or the third objective is met.

A game in five moments
What happens at the table
Not the rules. The experience.
Objectives revealed, opening hand, silence
Draw objectives. Read them. Immediately understand what pattern you need and which card to play first. The other player is doing the same calculation. The river is empty, but in 30 seconds someone will play the first card and the game truly begins.
First extensions, first wrong choices
You place a card downstream. The other player places another. The river lengthens by three, four positions. Then you realize that the card you extended on turn two should have gone under your bank, and now it's too late: the flow has already changed.
The river forks (mentally)
Now the river has eight cards. You have three tucked under your bank, the other player has two. You look at your hand: you have the perfect card to complete an objective, but if you tuck it now you'll lose control of the flow for two turns. The other player might finish first.
Someone completes the second objective
The opponent places a card under their bank, counts the symbols, declares the second objective complete. You're still on the first. You have two turns, maybe three, to catch up. Your hand is short, there are two options, and one of them is wrong but you don't know which one.
Someone closes the third, end
One card. A downstream extension that activates three symbols on the opponent's bank. Third objective, game over. You look at the river you built: it's asymmetrical, full of holes, and if you had played that card on turn four instead of five, you would have won. Shuffle, redistribute.

Repetitiveness after 10+ games
The deck is fixed (57 cards), objectives are few and repeat. After about ten games, the game reveals itself: you understand which cards to keep, which patterns are easier, and the discovery ends. If you're looking for an abstract game with an evolving meta or expansions, this is not the right game.
Luck of the draw
You draw from a common deck and your hand is small (3-4 cards). If you draw poorly two turns in a row, the opponent can complete an objective and put pressure on you. Choices matter, but an unlucky draw can decide close games.
No bluffing, everything is clear
Objectives are public, cards on the table are visible, your hand is small. There's no deception, no psychological reading. It's a shared puzzle where the player who optimizes best wins. If you love mind games or bluffing, look elsewhere.
🏆Victory and defeatWhat the ending rewards▼
How it ends
How to win (and how to lose)
The first player to complete three objectives wins. There are no ties, no eliminations: the river grows until someone completes the third pattern.
Victory
- You complete three objectives (patterns on your banks) before your opponent
- You close the last objective on your turn by extending the river or enriching a bank
- The other player has completed two objectives but you close the third first and end the game
Defeat
- Your opponent completes the third objective before you
- You built inefficient patterns and the other player optimized extensions better
- You lost control of the flow in key turns and the other player used your extensions to complete their objectives
Downstream is an abstract game that takes 5 minutes to learn and 15 to play, but every card is a real decision. If you're looking for a quick and honest geometric duel, this is the game for you.

Frequently Asked Questions
FAQ about Downstream
What mechanics does Downstream use?
Pattern building (you build symbol configurations on your banks) and two-phase tile placement: each card can be extended downstream (you control the river) or tucked under an existing bank (you build your objectives). The two actions are mutually exclusive.
How long does a game last?
10-20 minutes. The fastest games end in 10 minutes if a player optimizes well and completes three objectives quickly. Longer games reach 20 minutes if both players build complex patterns and the deck runs out before a victory.
Is it suitable for people who never play abstract games?
Yes, with a caveat. The rules are immediate and the first game plays quickly, but the depth only emerges after 3-4 games when you understand the timing of extensions. If you've ever played Patchwork or Azul, Downstream will feel familiar.
Is there interaction or is it a multiplayer solitaire?
There is strong indirect interaction: every time you extend the river downstream, you also activate your opponent's symbols if their bank is compatible. You must decide whether to play for yourself (enrich your banks) or control the flow, knowing you might help the other player. It's not direct combat, but every move matters for both.
Is it available in Italian?
No. The edition sold on FroGames is in English, published by Firestarter Games. The game is entirely language-independent: the cards only have symbols and icons, no text. The rulebook is in English but short and illustrated.
