FroGames — Moments You'll Remember
Everyone holds their breath. Someone points to where the blue book goes. You lift it millimeter by millimeter. And when it touches the tower, a collective applause or groan erupts.
WHAT IT'S ABOUT
A bookshelf to build together, one book at a time
Bookshelf is the latest addition to the renowned Alley Cat Games tin line, published in Italy by Little Rocket Games. Designed by Caezar Al-Jassar with illustrations by Rory Muldoon, it's a cooperative dexterity game that fits in a small metal box but tests the nerves and coordination of the entire table.
Together, you build a tower of books following the instructions on each card: which book to place, where to position it, which rules to follow. It seems easy until it's your turn to place that red volume precariously balanced on three others. One book at a time, breathe together and hope physics is on your side.
What they say abroad
A game that turns tension into shared laughter
— FroGames
15 minutes of pure cooperative fun in a tin box
— FroGames
Bookshelf
The game officially supports solo mode (1 to 6 players). Alone, the challenge remains the same, but you lose the shared tension and lively discussions about where to place the next book. It remains a good dexterity exercise, but the full experience is at the table with others.
What's in the box
Books, cards, and lots of held breath
Wooden books
Colored miniature books of different sizes, each with its own weight and shape. Some fit anywhere, others only in impossible balance.
Card tower
Each card indicates which book to place and where. Simple instructions that become dramatic as the tower grows and sways.
Tin box
The classic metal tin from the tin line: compact, robust, perfect for travel. Everything inside, ready to take anywhere.
Ruthless physics
No dice, no luck. Just gravity, balance, and your trembling hand while everyone watches you.
In a few minutes, you'll find out if you're good architects or terrible librarians. Either way, you'll have a story to tell.
A game in five moments
What happens at the table
Not the rules. The experience.
Confident start
The first card is drawn, the first book is placed. It seems easy, too easy. Someone says "This is a good start" and no one imagines what will happen in 10 minutes. The tower is still stable, the table relaxed.
First thrills
The tower grows. Someone places a book that makes the structure sway slightly. The first moment of collective silence: everyone watches, no one breathes. Then the tower stabilizes and a sigh of relief escapes.
Strategic discussion
The card says "red book on top". But which side? Which angle? Two people argue heatedly, a third points with a finger, the fourth covers their eyes. The final decision is always a compromise.
Collective breath-holding
The heaviest book must go on a precarious base. The hand approaches millimeter by millimeter. No one speaks, no one moves. The contact is very gentle. The tower sways... and holds. Explosion of joy.
Victory or collapse
Either the tower is completed and a liberating applause breaks out, or one book too many makes it collapse and the table erupts in laughter and good-natured accusations. In both cases, someone immediately asks: "Another one?"
How to play
The flow of each round
Each turn is a delicate dance between cards, books, and physics.
Draw a card from the tower and read it together. It indicates which book to place and where.
Discuss the strategy: which book to take, where exactly to place it, how to support it to minimize wobbling.
One player (chosen by the group or in turn) delicately places the book following the instructions. Everyone holds their breath.
If the tower holds for a few seconds, the book is successfully placed. If it collapses, the game ends. Otherwise, you move on to the next card.
Why it's different from others
Six reasons why Bookshelf works
Truly cooperative
There isn't one player more important: every decision is shared, every success is for everyone. Tension unites rather than divides, and when the tower collapses, no one points fingers.
Fits anywhere
The Alley Cat tin box is small, sturdy, portable. It fits in a backpack, a bag, a jacket pocket. Set up in 30 seconds wherever there's a table.
Rules in 2 minutes
Zero learning curve: draw card, read, place book. The first game starts immediately, with no tutorials or trial runs. Perfect even for those who never play games.
Tactile components
The wooden books have weight, texture, and different shapes. They are not abstract pawns: they are real objects to handle with care. The physicality of the game is part of the experience.
Scalable difficulty
The cards have instructions of variable complexity. Some are simple ("blue book on top"), others require precise placement. The difficulty grows naturally with the height of the tower.
1 to 6 players with no downtime
It works as a solo personal challenge, as a duo for precision, and up to 6 players with no downtime: everyone participates simultaneously in the discussion and tension.
How it ends
Victory and defeat
Physics is the ultimate arbiter. Either the tower holds, or it collapses.
Victory
- Complete the tower following all cards without making the books collapse
- Successfully place the last book indicated by the deck
- Celebrate together the impossible feat just accomplished
Defeat
- The tower collapses while placing a book
- A book falls from the tower even after being placed
- The structure becomes too unstable to continue
Bookshelf is pure tension in pocket format: 20 minutes of collective breath-holding, animated discussions, and ruthless physics. Perfect for families, light evenings, and travel backpacks.
Frequently Asked Questions
Bookshelf FAQ
Does it really play well with 6 people?
Yes, surprisingly well. There are no individual turns: everyone discusses together where to place each book, so no one is left watching. With 6 players, the tower of opinions is as tall as the tower of books, but that's part of the fun.
Is it suitable for 8-year-olds?
Absolutely. The rules are immediate and the challenge is accessible even for those with small hands. In fact, children are often more precise and less anxious than adults. The age 8+ is correct.
How long does a game really last?
Between 15 and 20 minutes, but it depends on how much you discuss each move. Some tables place books quickly, others organize real strategic summits. If the tower collapses early, you restart immediately: games are short and follow one another.
Is it worth playing solo?
It works as a personal dexterity challenge, but it loses the magic of collective discussion and shared applause. If you're looking for a portable physical puzzle, it's fine, but the full experience is with at least 2-3 people.
Is it available in Italian?
Yes, this Little Rocket Games edition includes cards and rulebook in Italian. The books are universal components (no text), so the localization only concerns the instructions written on the cards.

Designed by Caezar Al-Jassar and published by Little Rocket Games, it is part of the famous Alley Cat Games tin line: complete games in portable metal boxes. Immediate mechanics, tactile components, pure cooperative tension. Perfect for families, casual evenings, and as a filler between longer games. Available on FroGames.it.
