FroGames — Moments You'll Remember
Someone builds impossible combos, someone draws the wrong creature at the wrong time, someone discovers a Manta Ray can change everything. And in the end, no one just talks about who won.
WHAT IT'S ABOUT
The Southern Tribes bring new strategies to the realm of Aquatica
Coral Reefs is the expansion that enriches Aquatica, the engine-building game by Ivan Tuzovsky set in the underwater realms. Illustrations by Victor Zaburdaev bring new sea creatures, unique characters, and the mysterious Southern Tribes to the table: civilizations that add asymmetry and strategic depth.
At the table, you build creature decks, activate increasingly powerful combos, and conquer underwater locations to accumulate victory points. Coral Reefs introduces transparent coral reef miniatures, new objective cards, and Manta Ray encounters: unpredictable events that can overturn the game's rules and force immediate tactical choices.
What they say abroad
The best expansions don't change the game. They give it room to breathe.

Aquatica: Coral Reefs
The base game includes an official solo mode, and Coral Reefs fully supports it. You play against a scalable scoring system that simulates competition for locations. The experience is solid and strategically sound, but it loses the tension of direct competition against other players.
What you'll find in the expansion
The new game elements
Southern Tribes
New asymmetric factions with unique abilities: each changes how you build your engine and conquer locations.
Sea Creatures
New creature cards to add to the pool: new abilities, fresh combos, strategies to explore.
Manta Ray Encounters
Special events that flip the rules: you draw an encounter card and must react immediately, adapting your strategy on the fly.
Coral Reefs
Transparent miniatures and reef cards that introduce new modular objectives: each module adds a layer of complexity to the game.

Aquatica was already an elegant engine-builder. Coral Reefs makes it deeper, more variable, more yours.
A game in five moments
What happens at the table
Not the rules. The experience.
Choosing Tribes
Each player draws a Southern Tribe: asymmetric abilities that define the initial strategy. Some read the card three times. Others already know what to do. There's always a moment of silence before the first turn.
First Combos
The first turns are about exploration: you try out new cards, discover synergies, and understand how to integrate tribal abilities with the creatures you draw. Some are already building an engine. Others are still searching.
Manta Ray Encounter
Draw the first encounter card: the rules change for everyone. A Manta Ray flips an ability, blocks a resource, opens a new scoring path. Those ahead slow down. Those behind find an opening.
Race for Locations
Mid-game: everyone has working engines, everyone is aiming for the same underwater locations. Tension rises: whoever conquers first gets the best points. Tactical choices become critical.
Last Draw
Endgame: someone draws the perfect creature to complete the final combo. Someone else has one card too many in hand. Points are counted. Recounted. Someone says: 'If only I had played that card on turn three...'
How to play
The flow of each turn
Each turn revolves around a central choice: which card to play to maximize combos and advance towards victory.
Choose a creature from your hand and play it on your tableau: immediately activate its ability and synergies with other cards already in play.
Creatures fit together: one generates resources, another converts them into points, a third draws extra cards. Build increasingly complex combos.
Spend resources to conquer underwater locations: each location is worth victory points and unlocks new abilities.
Draw new cards (open drafting or from the deck) and prepare for the next turn. If you draw a Manta Ray, the rules change immediately.
Why it's different from others
Six elements that make a difference
Asymmetric Tribes
Southern Tribes are not cosmetic: each one radically changes how you build your engine. One favors quick combos, another long-term engines. True asymmetry, not minor variations.
Unpredictable Encounters
Manta Rays flip the rules during the game: an encounter card can block a resource, change the value of locations, or open new scoring paths. Those who adapt win.
Modular Components
Coral Reefs is modular: you can play with only the new tribes, only the coral reefs, or with everything together. You decide the complexity you want at the table.
Tangible Physical Components
Transparent coral reef miniatures and reef cards add physical presence to the table: they are not just tokens, they are scenic elements that change the geography of the game.
Full Compatibility
Coral Reefs integrates perfectly with the base game and the Cold Waters expansion: you can combine them all for ever-different games, or play only with the modules you prefer.
Depth Without Weight
The expansion adds strategic choices but doesn't weigh down the rules: if you know Aquatica, you'll learn the modules in 5 minutes. Complexity is in the decisions, not the rules.
How it ends
How you win and how you lose
The game ends when a player reaches a predetermined number of victory points by conquering locations and activating combos.
Victory
- Build an efficient engine that generates resources quickly and converts them into victory points
- Conquer the most valuable locations before your opponents, leveraging your tribe's abilities
- Adapt your strategy to Manta Ray encounters, turning unforeseen events into opportunities
Loss
- Build a slow engine that can't compete for key locations
- Ignore your tribe's abilities and play cards without synergy
- Fail to adapt to Manta Ray encounters and get stuck on a rigid strategy
Coral Reefs doesn't change Aquatica. It completes it: more tribes, more creatures, more choices, more diverse games. If you liked the base game, this expansion is a must-have.
Frequently Asked Questions
Aquatica: Coral Reefs FAQ
Do I need the base game to play Coral Reefs?
Yes, Coral Reefs is an expansion: it is not playable on its own. It requires the Aquatica base game and integrates perfectly with it and the Cold Waters expansion.
Are the expansion modules compatible with each other?
Yes, all modules are compatible: you can play with only the Southern Tribes, only the Manta Rays, only the coral reefs, or combine them all together. Modularity is one of the expansion's strengths.

Yes, they introduce true strategic asymmetry: each tribe has unique abilities that favor a different playstyle. They are not minor variations, but distinct strategic paths that require different approaches to engine building.
How much does it add to the game length?
Little to none: Coral Reefs adds depth but doesn't slow down the flow. Games still last around 60 minutes, even with all modules active. Complexity is in the decisions, not in downtime.
