The FroGames Review
You play the weakest set of dragons and everyone thinks you've blundered. Then, your card triggers its power, you reshape the pot, and walk away with the gold from the final round. No one is laughing anymore.
WHAT IS IT
The card game born inside Dungeons & Dragons, now in an expanded version
Three-Dragon Ante started as a minigame mentioned in D&D manuals, played by characters in the taverns of the Forgotten Realms. Rob Heinsoo (designer of D&D 4th Edition) brought it to life in 2005, and this Legendary Edition adds new Legendary Dragon cards, Mortals, gold coins, and Ability tokens to integrate it with your tabletop campaigns. Art by Olga Drebas, Brian Lee, and Craig Phillips.
Ante up gold, play sets of cards (dragons or mortals), and the strongest combination wins. But playing weak cards triggers their powers and turns the next round on its head. It’s a game of timing: when to push to win the pot, and when to lose to build an advantage. In 30 minutes of bluffing, combos, and tavern laughs.
What they say abroad
"A simple, quick card game with surprising depth and a lot of luck mitigation."

— Meeple Mountain
It's not just luck: losing the right hand at the right time wins you the game. It's a system that rewards those who know how to wait and then strike.

Three-Dragon Ante: Legendary Edition
What you play
Dragon cards, mortals, and powers that turn the tavern upside down
Dragon Cards
Sets of dragons with increasing value: White, Black, Green, Blue, Red, and up to the Legendary ones. Each type has different powers that activate when you play a weak hand.
Mortal Cards
Warriors, mages, thieves: they combine with dragons or each other to form mixed sets. Aggressive powers that steal gold, discard opponent cards, and change the flow.
Ante
Every hand starts with the ante: everyone puts gold into the center. The player who plays the strongest set wins the pot. But losing strategically lets you accumulate Ability tokens for subsequent hands.
Ability Tokens
When you lose or activate certain powers, you take tokens you can spend to draw extra cards, increase combos, or force replays. The game's anti-luck system.

🎲How to playThe rules in four steps▼
How to play
The flow of each hand
A game is a series of hands. Every hand follows the same rhythm: ante, play, resolve, collect.
Everyone puts a gold coin into the central pot. Draw cards until you have six in hand (or use tokens to draw more). Assess whether you have a strong trio or if it is better to play weak to trigger powers.
In turns, everyone plays three face-up cards: same color (pure dragon), same value (pure mortals), or mixed combinations. Weak cards trigger powers that let you draw cards, steal gold, or discard opponents' hands.
Compare the trios: the strongest wins according to the hierarchy (legendary dragons > red > blue... > white; high mortals > low). The winner takes the entire pot. The loser gains Skill tokens or activates effects.
Continue until the deck runs out or a player reaches a gold threshold (depending on the number of players). End of game: whoever has the most gold wins.

What happens at the table
Not the rules. The experience.
The first bet
Everyone antes up and draws six cards. Someone has three red dragons and smiles. Someone has scattered mortals and is already thinking about which power to activate. Nobody knows yet who will win this hand, but everyone knows that losing isn't necessarily bad.
The first bluff
You play a weak trio on purpose: you trigger the White Dragon's power, draw two cards, and take a Skill token. The others win the pot, you accumulate tools. The next hand will be different.
The stakes rise
Now there are 12 gold coins in the center. Someone plays a Mortal that forces everyone to discard, someone else responds with a Legendary Dragon. Laughter mixes with swearing. The tension rises, but remains light.
Power at the right time
You use your accumulated tokens to draw extra cards, assemble a trio you would never have had otherwise, and take the richest pot of the game. Those who counted you out now realize you played the previous hands as a setup.
Final count
Once the cards are gone, the coins are counted. Whoever won the most big pots usually wins, but those who accumulated small, steady wins are right there. Margins of 2-3 coins, discussions about which power was the best, immediate requests for a rematch.

Three things to know before playing
Luck carries weight, but you have tools
You draw blind and a bad hand can cost you a big pot. But Skill tokens and powers activated by losing give you ways to straighten out the game. It is not pure poker: you always have a tactical move.
4-6 players is ideal
It works with 2 and up, but with fewer than 4, it loses chaos and interaction. Take-that cards and bluffs shine when the table is full and the stakes are contested. With two, it becomes more tactical, less of a party game.
Legendary cards are unbalanced (on purpose)
Legendary Dragon cards are strong and rare: if you draw one at the right time you win easily; if you never see one, you are at a disadvantage. It's a feature, not a bug: it creates narrative peaks. If you want strict balance, this is not the right game.
🏆Victory and defeatWhat the ending rewards▼
How it ends
How to win and how to lose
The game ends when the deck runs out or a player reaches the gold threshold (varies by number of players). Whoever has the most gold wins.
Victory
- Accumulate more gold coins than your opponents by winning the biggest pots
- Use Skill tokens to draw strong hands at key moments
- Activate the powers of weak cards in hands where you can afford to lose, then leverage the advantage
Defeat
- You always aim to win every hand and find yourself without Skill tokens when you need them
- You draw poorly and don't have the tools to compensate (it happens, it's a card game)
- Others read you: you bluff too much or too little, and your moves become predictable
Three-Dragon Ante is fantasy poker with asymmetric powers: in 30 minutes you get bluffs, combos, laughter, and an excuse to shout "LEGENDARY DRAGON!" while slamming the card. It's not a deep strategy game; it's a party game that rewards those who know when to lose.

Frequently asked questions
FAQ about Three-Dragon Ante: Legendary Edition
What mechanics does Three-Dragon Ante use?
Trick-taking, betting, hand management, and set collection. You play trios of cards, compare combinations, and win the pot. Asymmetric powers on the cards add a tactical layer on top of the classic structure.
Does it work well with two players?
It works, but it loses its bite. In two players, it is more tactical and controlled; the chaos of multiple bets is missing, and bluffs have less room to breathe. 4-6 players is ideal to fully utilize the interaction and take-that powers.
Do you need to know Dungeons & Dragons to play?
No. It is a standalone card game set in the Forgotten Realms, but no knowledge of D&D is required. If you play D&D, you can use the Skill tokens to integrate it into your campaign (rules included), but it is optional.
How much does luck matter?
A lot: you draw cards blind and a bad hand costs you a pot. But you have Skill tokens, powers activated by losing, and tactical choices that mitigate it. It's not about who draws best; it's about who knows when to push and when to accumulate resources.
Is it available in English?
Yes, this is the official Asmodee edition with cards, rulebook, and components fully localized. Ready to play with no translation needed.
