The FroGames Review
The eastern marshes hide the restless dead. To the west, the Dunlendings nurse a grudge. And you are in the middle, trying to figure out who is pulling the strings before Rohan sinks into blood once again.
WHAT IT IS
Three villains, two campaigns, a conspiracy smoldering beneath Rohan
Scourges of the Wastes is a figure pack expansion for The Lord of the Rings: Journeys in Middle-earth, designed by Grace Holdinghaus and released by Fantasy Flight Games in 2022. It brings to the table three detailed miniatures of the main enemies that feature in the Spreading War campaign (included in the base game) and the downloadable Poison Promise campaign: the villains who orchestrate war, vengeance, and betrayal in the lands of Rohan.
This expansion does not add new missions. It adds physical presence: it replaces the cardboard tokens of the three main antagonists with sculpted miniatures, and also includes five new item cards and a new playable role usable in any adventure in Journeys in Middle-earth. It is an aesthetic upgrade that transforms the table and mechanical content that intertwines with the entire system.
What they're saying abroad
An expansion you don't need in order to play, but one that makes everything feel more alive.

The Lord of the Rings: Journeys in Middle-earth – Scourges of the Wastes Figure Pack
Journeys in Middle-earth is designed for solo play from day one: the app manages the enemies, the villain miniatures work exactly the same way in solo play, and the management of your own deck of cards is very pure. There is no loss compared to multiplayer; on the contrary, in solo you control the pace and can construct denser personal narratives.
What's in the box
Three miniatures and reusable mechanical content
Three villain miniatures
The sculpts of the three main antagonists of Spreading War and Poison Promise: they replace the flat tokens and give visual weight to the key encounters of the campaign.
Five new item cards
New equipment to draw during adventures, compatible with all campaigns in the system. They integrate into the global item card pool.
A new playable role
A complete identity with a dedicated skill deck, usable in any mission in Journeys in Middle-earth. It expands the possible builds without affecting the rules.
Retroactive compatibility
Works with the base campaign Spreading War and with the downloadable campaign Poison Promise. The miniatures fit in place of the tokens; nothing else changes.

How to play
How it integrates into the experience
It does not change the base game flow. It replaces components and adds options.
Follow the setup for Spreading War or Poison Promise as usual. When the app tells you to place a main villain, use the miniature instead of the flat token. Nothing else changes.
The app handles enemy movement, attacks, and logic as usual. You physically move the miniature when requested. The sculpts do not touch the rules: they are just a more evocative physical representation.
During character creation for any adventure, you can choose the role included in this expansion. You draw the dedicated skill deck and play like any other role in the system.
The five new item cards are shuffled into the global item deck. They appear randomly during equipment or reward phases, exactly like the base items.

What happens at the table
Not the rules. The experience.
Campaign opening
The app introduces the villain with a narrated scene. Someone places the miniature on the board instead of the flat token. The table stops for a moment: the enemy now occupies space, has a face and posture. The mission becomes more physical.
First direct clash
The group approaches the villain for the first time. The app triggers combat, the dice start rolling. The miniature is right there: it’s not a number on a card, it’s a model you look at while you choose which card to play. The tension changes.
Mid-campaign
The villain moves on the map according to the app's instructions, changes position, threatens new territories. The miniature is moved physically: someone picks it up, someone else indicates where to put it. The board tells the story even when the app is silent.
Final showdown
The concluding clash with the main villain. The miniature is at the center of the board, surrounded by the hero tokens. The app manages the mechanics, but the narrative weight comes from the sculpts: you physically see who you are facing. When it falls, someone removes it from the board. Over.
Mission end
Campaign concluded. The miniatures go back in the box, the new role goes into the deck of available characters for the next adventure. Someone says: “Next time I'll try the new role.” The expansion has done its job: more stage presence, more tactical options.

Good to know
Three honest things
Requires the base game + specific campaigns
The miniatures work ONLY with Spreading War (included in the base game) and Poison Promise (downloadable campaign). If you don't own these campaigns, the sculpts remain unused. The new role and item cards work everywhere, but they are limited content.
Aesthetic upgrade, not narrative
It does not add missions, scenarios, or event cards. It is a miniature pack that replaces tokens: it improves stage presence, not expands the plot. If you are looking for more hours of gameplay, check out the campaign expansions.
Miniatures require assembly/painting
The sculpts arrive grey and require basic assembly (a few pieces, glue optional). If you want to paint them, you need time and materials. They work perfectly fine as grey, but some players want them colored: evaluate if you want to pick up the brushes.
🏆Victory and defeatWhat the finale rewards▼
How it ends
Impact on the system
A miniature expansion has no victory conditions of its own: it enriches existing campaigns.
What you get
- Villains physically present on the board during Spreading War and Poison Promise
- A new permanent role usable in all future adventures
- Five unique items that enter the system's global pool
What you don't get
- New missions, scenarios, or extra hours of gameplay
- Compatibility with campaigns other than those indicated
- Pre-assembled or pre-painted miniatures
If you own the compatible campaigns and want a more scenic table and an extra role, this expansion works. If you are looking for more narrative content, look elsewhere.

FAQ
FAQ about The Lord of the Rings: Journeys in Middle-Earth – Scourges of the Wastes Figure Pack
Do I need the base game to use this expansion?
Yes. Scourges of the Wastes is a miniature and content expansion for The Lord of the Rings: Journeys in Middle-Earth. Without the base game and the app, you cannot play. The miniatures work specifically with the campaigns Spreading War (in the base game) and Poison Promise (downloadable).
Do the new role and item cards work in all campaigns?
Yes. The playable role and the five item cards integrate into any adventure of Journeys in Middle-Earth, regardless of the campaign. Only the three villain miniatures are specific to Spreading War and Poison Promise.
Do the miniatures change the rules or difficulty?
No. They replace the flat main villain tokens with three-dimensional sculpts, but mechanically they work exactly the same. The app handles everything as usual: movement, attacks, enemy logic. The only change is visual.
What mechanics does The Lord of the Rings: Journeys in Middle-Earth – Scourges of the Wastes use?
The expansion fits into an app-driven cooperative system with deck-building (you build your character's deck during the campaign), modular exploration (the board is revealed by tiles), test-based resolution (you roll dice against thresholds), and narrative role-playing (the app tells the story, you choose). The new role uses the same hand management and skill mechanics as the base system.
Is it available in Italian?
Yes. This Asmodee edition is completely in Italian: cards, rulebook, and components. The game app supports Italian and handles all the narration and mission logic in the chosen language.
