Pairs well with
Not a standalone game. Pub Crawlers is an expansion: the base game Gloomhaven: Buttons & Bugs (sold separately) is required to play.
What it's about
Two button-sized heroes, a tavern full of trouble
Pub Crawlers is the expansion for Gloomhaven: Buttons & Bugs, the pocket-sized solo version of the celebrated dungeon crawler by Cephalofair Games. Two new micro mercenaries — the Fungal Monk and Whistlecry — enter the scene with miniatures, a deck of cards, and an entirely new campaign set in the abandoned inn.
The system is Gloomhaven, stripped down to its core: a small hand of double-sided cards, the top action from one card and the bottom from another, combat resolved with a die and modifier table. You can set up a scenario in a couple of minutes and finish it in twenty.
Pub Crawlers adds 2 mercenaries, 17 new scenarios, new dice, and an adjustable difficulty system. The campaign is cross-compatible: you can also play it with the mercenaries from the base game Gloomhaven: Buttons & Bugs.
The secret in two lines
Gloomhaven in a nutshell: the same cerebral tactics, but in twenty minutes and on an airplane tray table.
The secret of Pub Crawlers in one line
Two cards, two halves, one hero against the inn: every turn is a small puzzle to solve under pressure.

A new mercenary with a miniature, character card, and dedicated deck. A new play style to discover scenario after scenario.
Whistlecry

17 new scenarios
An entirely new campaign: each scenario is a card with its own mini battle map. Cross-compatible with base game mercenaries.
New dice and difficulty
Blessing/Curse die, modifier die, and a new system to adjust difficulty to your liking.
A button-sized mercenary, an inn full of monsters, and twenty minutes all to yourself. The next game starts as soon as you open the box.

📖RulebookEnglish · Buttons & Bugs system
Pub Crawlers uses the same system as the base game: once you've learned the Buttons & Bugs rules, you're ready to play.
A game in five moments
What happens at the table
Not the rules. The experience. Solo, against the tavern.
Open the box on your lunch break
A few pieces, a scenario card with its mini map, your mercenary, and their handful of cards. You're ready in two minutes. No giant table, no endless setup: just you and the tavern.
Two cards, infinite choices
Choose two cards from your small hand: the top action from one, the bottom action from the other. Used cards return to you face-down on their B-side, with different actions. Each turn is a small puzzle: what do you play now, what do you save for later?
The Fungal Monk surrounded
Hit points dropping, enemies blocking every escape route. You roll the die and check the modifier table: plus, minus, or nothing? One wrong move and the scenario is lost. Everything is decided here.
The move that turns the scenario around
You play the right card at the right time, the Blessing die goes your way, and that seemingly unbeatable enemy falls. A turn ago, you were doomed. Now you're back in control. This is the moment you play for.
Scenario completed, hero stronger
Objective achieved. Level up, upgrade cards, and choose how to approach the next scenario. Pack everything away in a minute — and you're already thinking about when you'll resume the campaign.
How to play
The flow of each turn
The same tactical DNA of Gloomhaven, stripped down to the essentials. You learn it in the first scenario, master it in three.
From your small hand of double-sided cards, you select the two you will play this turn. The printed initiative determines who acts first, you or the monsters.
Perform the top action of one card and the bottom action of the other: move, attack, apply conditions. Alternatively, you can always make a basic move or attack.
Every attack is resolved with a die roll and the modifier table, now enhanced by the expansion's new Blessing and Curse dice. Monsters act automatically.
A-side cards return to your hand face-down on their B-side; B-side cards go to the discard pile. When you can no longer play two cards, you rest and recover some — but you lose a card. Run out of cards and the scenario is lost.
Why add it to your collection
Six reasons to open the tavern
Two brand new mercenaries
The Fungal Monk and Whistlecry bring completely new miniatures, decks, and play styles. Two new ways to think about every turn.
17 scenarios, a new campaign
Each scenario is a card with its own mini battle map. A whole new story in the miniaturized world of Gloomhaven.
Cross-compatible campaign
It doesn't tie you to the new heroes: you can also tackle the Pub Crawlers campaign with mercenaries from the base game.
New dice at the table
Blessing/Curse die and modifier die add variability and tension to every single attack.
Tailored difficulty
The new difficulty modifier system lets you raise or lower the challenge. You decide how much your hero has to sweat.
Gloomhaven on your lunch break
Setup in a couple of minutes, scenario in twenty. It fits on an airplane tray table and packs away in an instant.
How a scenario ends
Win the map, or bite the dust
Each scenario is a self-contained mission, to be completed in one sitting. Your hero only grows if they survive — and surviving here is not a given.
Scenario completed
- Achieve the scenario objective (defeat enemies or reach the exit)
- Advance in the campaign and unlock the next scenario
- Level up: upgrade ability cards and choose new items
Exhaustion
- Your hit points reach zero
- Or you run out of enough cards to play or rest
- The scenario is lost — but you can try again, perhaps adjusting the difficulty
If you love Gloomhaven's combat system and are looking for new solo challenges, Pub Crawlers is the fastest way to get back to the tavern. Open the box: your next scenario awaits.
Frequently asked questions
FAQ on Buttons & Bugs: Pub Crawlers
Can I play Pub Crawlers without the base game?
No. Pub Crawlers is an expansion: you need the Gloomhaven: Buttons & Bugs base box, sold separately, to play. Without the base game, fundamental components (boards, tables, rules) are missing. It's designed for those who already own Buttons & Bugs and want new content.
Is it worth it if I've already finished the base campaign?
Yes, if you liked the system. It adds 2 completely new mercenaries (Fungal Monk and Whistlecry), 17 unreleased scenarios with a new campaign, new dice, and an adjustable difficulty system. The campaign is cross-compatible, so you can replay it with base game mercenaries for a different experience.
How long does a game last?
Each scenario sets up in a couple of minutes and plays in about 20 minutes, often less. It's specifically designed for short sessions: a lunch break, a train journey, half an hour before dinner. The campaign consists of 17 scenarios to be tackled in order.
Is it only for solo play?
Yes. Like the entire Buttons & Bugs system, Pub Crawlers is a solo player experience. You control one mercenary at a time against the scenario's monsters, with automated AI that doesn't require a human opponent.
Is it difficult to learn if I've never played Gloomhaven?
The system is a simplified version of Gloomhaven: you learn it during the first scenario, also thanks to the "Learn to Play" guide and the Dized digital tutorial. It remains a tactical game that rewards careful planning. Keep in mind that you'll first need to learn the rules of the Buttons & Bugs base game.
Is it available in Italian?
This is the English edition. The rules are in English and the texts on the cards are in English, but the game is very visual and icon-based: once you learn the system, there is minimal text to read during gameplay.
Gloomhaven: Buttons & Bugs – Pub Crawlers is an expansion for the solo pocket dungeon crawler from Cephalofair Games, for 1 player (ages 10+, approximately 20 minutes per scenario). Part of the Micro Mercenaries line, it adds two new mercenaries — the Fungal Monk and Whistlecry, each with a micro miniature, character card, and double-sided ability cards — plus 17 scenario cards with mini battle maps, 6 monster stat cards with 12 distinct enemies, 36 condition tokens, a new Blessing/Curse die, modifier die, and a new difficulty modifier system. Main mechanics: hand management and tactical turn-based combat with dice and modifier table. The campaign is cross-compatible with base game mercenaries. Requires the Gloomhaven: Buttons & Bugs base box to play. English edition. Available on FroGames.it.
