Star Realms
10th Anniversary Edition
Two fleets, one galaxy, ten years of tension compressed into twenty minutes. The deckbuilder that redefined card dueling celebrates a decade with its most refined look yet.
What it's about
A space duel that starts from scratch and ends in twenty minutes
In 2014, two Magic Hall of Famers — Robert Dougherty (co-designer of Ascension) and Darwin Kastle — published a small deck of cards that changed the meaning of the word "deckbuilder." No boards, no tokens, no frills: two players, two identical starting decks, a supply line in the middle of the table. That's how Star Realms begins.
Each turn you acquire ships and bases from among the four factions — Blob, Machine Cult, Trade Federation, Star Empire — combining them to generate trade or combat. When your opponent's authority reaches zero, you win. It takes five minutes to learn, but the depth of choice keeps you glued to the table for ten years — literally.
This is the 10th-anniversary edition of Star Realms: extended artwork to the card edge, 4 compact score dials, a foil-stamped travel box that accommodates the game sleeved or unsleeved, and four starting decks to support up to four players with a single copy.
What they say abroad
"Star Realms isn't just a game — it's an obsession. Deck-building meets brutal space combat, and it's ridiculously addicting."

What makes the Anniversary Edition special
It's not just any reprint. It's the version the authors would have wanted to publish in 2014 if they had known what the game would become. Five things distinguish it from the original small box.
Extended artwork
The illustrations extend to all four edges of the cards — no more borders, no more text cutting off the art. Each ship becomes a complete illustration again.
4 compact score dials
No more counting tokens or using phone apps to track authority. Four physical counters included — one per player, always under control during the game.
Travel box foil stamped
Premium box with foil stamping. Designed to hold the game sleeved or unsleeved — finally. The compact format remains, the quality levels up.
4 starting decks
Four personal 10-card decks instead of two. With a single box, you can play up to four players in multiplayer format — free-for-all or team.
A decade of accolades
SXSW Game of the Year 2014, 7 Golden Geek Awards, 2 Dice Tower Awards, over 10 expansions, and an app with over a million downloads. All condensed into its most refined form.
Star Realms: 10th Anniversary Edition
The physical game is designed for dueling, but the official Star Realms app (over 1 million downloads) offers complete single-player campaigns. Solid experience — many players use it to train before live games.
The four factions
The arsenal at your disposal
Each card belongs to one of the four factions. Buying and playing multiple cards of the same faction activates ally abilities — the secret to the most devastating combos. This is where you win or lose.
Blob
Pure aggression and card drawing. High-yield combat, scarce defenses — Blob players just want the game to end quickly.
Machine Cult
Destroying your own discards to keep your deck sharp. A long-term strategy built on efficiency.
Trade Federation
Money and authority recovery. The defensive faction — builds slowly but survives everything. The cure against pressure.
Star Empire
Card drawing and forcing discards on your opponent. Time and timing — controls what the opponent can do on their turn.
Twenty minutes later, someone has won. Thirty minutes later, you're already reshuffling for the rematch.
🎴Components5 types · 141 total pieces
🃏Recommended Sleeves1 format · 136 total cards
The anniversary edition travel box is designed to hold the sleeved game — finally, you can protect your cards without having to change containers.
📖RulebookEnglish · included in box
The folded rulebook is included in the box in English. Wise Wizard Games makes official FAQs and support materials available on the official website starrealms.com.
A game in five moments
What happens at the table
Not the rules. The experience.
Same start, infinite paths
Open the foil travel box. You both have the same starting deck of ten cards — eight Scouts and two Vipers. The score dial shows 50 Authority. Five cards in hand for each of you (three for the first player on the first turn). The Trade Row in the center shows five available ships. Nothing is decided yet, but the first moves already matter.
The first choice that weighs heavily
You have 7 Trade. In front of you is a Federation Shuttle that recovers Authority, a Battle Pod Blob that deals immediate damage, a Machine Cult Trade Bot that cleans up discards. You choose — and with that choice, you declare your strategy. Your opponent sees everything and adapts their own.
When ally abilities awaken
You draw four: you draw two cards of the same faction. You play them together, the ally abilities activate in a cascade — extra combat, forced discards for the opponent, recovered Authority. The deck you built starts firing shots that it wouldn't on its own. The table changes pace.
Authority drops below 20
The score dial spins fast. Every turn someone loses ten, fifteen points. You control your outposts — the wall protecting your authority — the other player is accumulating combat for the big hit. One wrong card now and it's over. Every purchase is a calculation.
Zero. The game is over.
Someone has brought the opponent's Authority to zero. Twenty minutes since the seal. You look at each other, someone laughs, someone immediately asks for a rematch. The cards go back into the travel box — a few gestures, ready for next time. And next time always comes.
How to play
The flow of each turn
Four quick phases that repeat until victory. You learn in five minutes, but each game poses new questions.
Play any number of Ships from your hand. Each Ship generates Trade (to buy), Combat (to attack), or both. Bases remain on the table in front of you and are used once per turn.
Use Trade to buy from the Trade Row in the center or from the Explorer pile. Purchased cards go into your discard pile — they will be shuffled into your deck when you run out of cards to draw.
Use Combat to destroy opponent's Outposts (mandatory before hitting Authority) or to directly reduce Authority. Zero opponent Authority means immediate victory.
Discard all played Ships and those still in hand (Bases remain in play). Draw five new cards. Your opponent's turn begins — and you are already planning your next move.
Why it's different from others
Six reasons why Star Realms has lasted ten years
Duel deckbuilder, not solitaire for two
Unlike Dominion or Ascension, where everyone builds their deck in parallel, here you attack directly. Your Combat hits the other player's Authority. Constant interaction, never parallel.
Twenty minutes from sealed to verdict
Few games with strategic depth end so quickly. You play before dinner, after dinner, during lunch break. There's no wrong time for Star Realms.
Ally abilities — the secret engine
Playing two cards of the same faction unlocks extra abilities. Building a monochromatic deck is devastating, but the Trade Row never lets you choose comfortably. This is where you win.
As portable as few others
The anniversary travel box fits in your pocket. No boards, no scattered tokens. You play at the bar, on the train, on vacation. No other deckbuilder is so easy to take anywhere.
One system, infinite expansions
Colony Wars, Frontiers, Rise of Empire, dozens of small expansions. All standalone or compatible. The base game is complete on its own, but if you get hooked you can expand for years.
SXSW 2014 and 7 Golden Geek Awards
Board Game of the Year SXSW 2014, seven Golden Geek Awards on BoardGameGeek, two Dice Tower Awards. Top 200 on BGG after a decade — few games last so long.
How it ends
One way to win — and a hundred ways to build it
The ending is always the same: opponent's Authority at zero. But how you get there depends on what fleet you managed to build — and what the Trade Row let you buy.
Victory
- Reduce your opponent's Authority to zero
- To directly attack Authority, first destroy all opponent's Outposts
- Bases (not Outposts) can be ignored or destroyed at will
- Ally ability combos = devastating hits in a single turn
Defeat
- Your Authority drops to zero
- You start with 50 points — it seems like a lot, but they go fast
- The Trade Federation can recover Authority: use it if you fear collapse
- No redrawing, but the rematch always starts immediately after
Star Realms 10th Anniversary is the most refined way to discover — or rediscover — one of the most beloved deckbuilders of all time. A decade of refinement condensed into the definitive travel box.
Frequently asked questions
FAQ about Star Realms 10th Anniversary Edition
What's different from the original Star Realms from 2014?
Five things. Extended artwork to all four edges of the cards (no more borders), four physical score dials included (no more tokens), travel box with foil printing that accommodates the game sleeved or unsleeved, four starting decks instead of two (for multiplayer up to four players), and superior material quality. The game and cards are identical in rules and balance — this is the aesthetically and functionally perfect version.
If I already own the original Star Realms, does it make sense to get this edition?
It depends on how often you play it. If it's one of your most frequent games, the score dials and premium travel box are a clear upgrade — more convenient, more portable, more beautiful on the table. If you play it rarely, the original remains perfectly valid. The difference is not in the rules, it's in the care of the object and the ability to play with up to four players with a single box.
Is it a good game for someone who has never tried a deckbuilder?
Yes, it is considered one of the best entry points to the genre. The rules can be explained in five minutes, the first game flows smoothly, and the two-player duel makes learning faster compared to more crowded games. Those who start here will then easily understand all other deckbuilders — from Dominion to Marvel Champions.
Does it really work with more than two players?
With this edition, yes — the four included starting decks allow for games with up to four players in free-for-all or team formats. Keep in mind that the game is designed and balanced for two-player duels: multiplayer works and is fun, but it's a variant. For more developed multiplayer experiences, the community also recommends the Frontiers or Colony Wars expansions.
How long does a game really last?
The box states 20 minutes. That's honest. First games between beginners can extend to 30, but those who know the game finish in 15-20 minutes — often less. It's one of the fastest deckbuilders on the market, which is why you always end up playing two or three games in a row.
Are the cards in Italian?
No, this is the English edition. The icons (Trade, Combat, Authority) are universal and can be learned in a few minutes. The card text is in English but uses short, repetitive phrases — anyone with basic school English can play without problems. There are also free guides with card translations available online for those who don't read English at all.
