Bear Raid is designed by Ryan Courtney and illustrated by Emanuel Adams and Nick Nazzaro for Allplay. It's a game of financial speculation where it's not enough to buy the right stocks: you have to manipulate the market in your favor before someone else does the same to yours.
Each turn you buy, sell, or short stocks. Then you use dice—which you can manipulate through cards and abilities—to determine if prices rise or fall. The goal is simple: make more money than others. The method is ruthless: ruin anyone who bet on the wrong side.

What you use to bend the market
Stocks
You buy shares (long) or sell them short. If you guess the market direction, you earn. If you're wrong, you lose. If another player figures out what you're holding, they'll ruin you.
Modifiable Dice
You roll dice to determine if prices go up or down. But you don't just roll them: cards and abilities allow you to modify them, reroll them, block them. The market isn't random, it's manipulated.
Forecast Cards
Ironic headlines that determine which stocks are affected by the dice. Each card brings market news (true or false) that shifts prices. Whoever reads them first has an advantage.
Player Screens
They hide your portfolio. Others don't know exactly what you've invested in, but they see your moves. Bluffing is key: sometimes it's better to make the wrong move to throw them off.

How to Play
The Flow of Each Round
Each round is a cycle of speculation, manipulation, and revelation. No one is ever safe.
Each player takes actions: buying stocks (long), short-selling them, or liquidating positions. You can also play ability cards to prepare for the dice phase. All in secret behind your screen.
A Forecast card is revealed. It shows an ironic headline (like "Tech Bubble Bursts" or "Oil Prices Soar") and which sectors will be affected by the dice. Everyone now knows which stocks are at risk.
Players roll dice to determine if prices rise or fall. But before (and during) the roll, you can spend abilities to modify, reroll, or block other players' dice. It's a micro-war of manipulation.
Based on the dice, stock prices either rise or crash. Those with winning positions profit. Those with incorrect positions lose. Money is updated, new cards are prepared, and the game continues.

What Happens at the Table

Everyone Buys Stock
Game start: distribute money, grab a handful of stocks. No one knows what the others will do yet. Someone goes long on tech, someone else short on energy. Everyone thinks they've made the right move.
The First Crash
The first Forecast card appears. Someone rolls the dice. A sector crashes. Those who were short laugh, those who were long curse. You realize that the dice can be manipulated. The war begins.
Cross-Manipulation
Mid-game: everyone has realized that manipulating the dice is the only way to win. Someone blocks another's die, someone rerolls their own. The table becomes a tangle of bluffs and accusations. No one trusts anyone.
The Decisive Roll
A Forecast card changes everything. A seemingly stable sector crashes. Someone loses half their portfolio in one blow. Someone else, who had a hidden short, doubles their money. Shouts, laughter, accusations of cheating (no one cheated, it's the game).
Final Count
End of game: everyone reveals their portfolios. Those who seemed to be struggling have a winning short position. Those who seemed calm made bad bets. The winner is not always the one who shouted the most, but the one who sold at the right time.

Three Things to Know Before Playing
Luck can kill you
Even if you manipulate the dice, an unlucky roll can destroy your strategy. If you lose the first three hands, it's very hard to recover. This is not a game for those who hate chance.
Downtime with 6 players
With 6 people, the game slows down. Everyone has to take their actions, everyone has to manipulate the dice. With 3-4 players it's fast, with 6 it can become slow.
It's not a deep economic game
Bear Raid has a financial theme but not the complexity of an 18XX game. It's rapid speculation, not simulation. If you're looking for a heavy economic Eurogame, this isn't the right place.

Victory
- You accumulate more money than others through winning investments (long or short)
- Perfect timing: sell before the crash, buy before the rise
- You manipulate the dice enough to save your positions and ruin others'
Defeat
- You bet in the wrong direction too many times and your portfolio empties
- Others understand your positions and manipulate the dice against you
- You miss the timing: sell too early or too late

What mechanics does Bear Raid use?

How many players does it need to work well?
The game is for 3-6 players. The sweet spot is 4 players: enough interaction to manipulate each other, not so many to slow down the pace. With 6 it can become slow.

Yes. You don't need to know what a short squeeze is. The mechanics are intuitive: you buy if you think it will rise, you short-sell if you think it will fall. The rest is dice manipulation. Financial theme, simple rules.
How important is bluffing?
Very. Others don't see your portfolio, but they see your actions. If you buy too much of one sector, they'll understand you have long positions. Sometimes it's better to make misleading moves to hide your true strategy.
