You arrive in Thokaia and the village is burning. Cultists preach salvation in the flames, the sick follow them. You have herbs and a plague mask, they have torches and faith. The quest says to save three people, but you see seven looking at you.
WHAT IT'S ABOUT
Darkness has found prophets. And you are still alone with your mask
Fires of Thokaia is the standalone expansion for Light in the Dark, the solo dungeon crawler by Kai Starck illustrated by Daniel Cunha, set in a plague-ridden world. Thokaia introduces a new region corrupted by the Cult of Ember, a sect that preaches salvation through fire and sacrifice. The expansion brings new enemies, denser narrative quests, more powerful items, and for the first time, a double 2-player mode: cooperative or competitive.
You still wear the plague doctor's mask and travel between infected villages, gathering herbs, completing missions, and fighting with dice. But this time the enemies are not just beasts and bandits: they are indoctrinated followers, beasts corrupted by the cult, dark rituals. Each quest has narrative branches, every choice matters. And if you wish, a second doctor can join you or challenge you in a race to see who saves more souls before everything burns.

Light in the Dark: Fires of Thokaia
The base game was created for solo play, and Fires of Thokaia maintains the structure: you draw quests, explore, fight with dice, heal villages, all managed by you without an automa. The experience is complete, and the doctor's progression keeps the tension high. Compared to the base game, you add more challenging enemies and more branching quests, but you lose the novelty if you have already played Light in the Dark a lot.
What you find in the expansion
Four pillars of Thokaia
Cult of Ember
New enemies, not just monsters: cultists who speak, preach, corrupt NPCs. Some can be redeemed, others must be stopped. The cult is not a generic deck; it's a faction with its own rules.
Narrative Quests
Quests with branches: do you save the village or pursue the prophet? Do you heal the sick or interrogate them before they die? Each choice changes the map, rewards, and outcome. It's not just flavor text.
2-player mode
Cooperative: work together against the cult, share resources. Competitive: whoever saves more villages and completes more quests wins. Same enemy deck, different tension. It's the first time Light in the Dark goes beyond pure solo play.
New abilities and items
The doctor unlocks unprecedented powers: fire resistance, quick antidotes, counterattacks. Items are more powerful but require choices: carry three herbs or a relic that halves cult damage?

How to play
The flow of each turn
A turn in Fires of Thokaia is a cycle of actions, events, and combat. Each turn you move, interact, fight, or heal.
Spend action points to move on the map, draw herb cards, heal a village, or explore a new area. Each action costs 1-2 points, and you have 4-5 per turn (depending on unlocked abilities).
Draw an event card from the Thokaia pile. It could be an encounter with a cultist, a burning village, an NPC asking for help. Read the text, choose between options (fight, talk, flee). Each choice has consequences.
If you fight, you roll dice (one for you, one for the enemy). Compare the results, apply abilities and items. If you win, the enemy is defeated, and you gain rewards. If you lose, you take damage, and the enemy remains in play.
Update quest markers, draw new cards if you healed a village, advance the cult timer (if the quest has one). Check victory or defeat conditions. If the quest is not over, restart from point 1.

What happens at the table
Not the rules. The experience.
Choose the quest, prepare the cards
Read the quest card: three burning villages, a prophet to stop, a crossroads to face. Prepare the enemy deck with the new cultists, place the doctor's marker on the map. You already know that healing won't be enough: you'll have to choose who to save.
The first village and the first cultist
You arrive at the village, draw an event card. A cultist stops you, preaching purifying flames. Do you fight or talk? If you fight, you roll dice; if you talk, read the back of the card. The choice changes the reward and the path. You already understand that each turn will present you with a crossroads.
The quest forks
You've healed two villages, but the third is burning. The card gives you two options: save the survivors or chase the prophet fleeing towards the temple. You can't do both. Choose, flip the card, read the consequences. One NPC dies, another joins you. The game is no longer linear.
The fight against the corrupted beast
You arrive at the temple and draw the boss: a beast corrupted by the cult, red dice, special abilities. You use the new ability you've unlocked, the one that allows you to reroll a die once per combat. It works, the beast falls. But the die cost you two health points, and you still have the prophet to face.
The quest closes, tally your points
The prophet is stopped, the cult dissolves. Read the quest's closing text: two villages saved, one lost, one NPC dead. If you're playing in competitive mode, compare points with the other doctor. If you're alone, check if you've met the requirement to unlock the next quest. Thokaia is safe, but not entirely.

Is the base game needed? Not officially, but...
The publisher says that Fires of Thokaia is standalone, so technically you can play it right away. But in practice, many mechanics, terms, and the doctor's progression are designed for those who already know Light in the Dark. If you start from scratch, you risk getting lost: it's better to play the base game first or at least read its rulebook.
The 2-player mode is brand new
Light in the Dark was designed for solo play. Here they add co-op and duel, but without reviews, we don't know if they truly work. The risk is that the duel is just "play two parallel games and compare scores" instead of real interaction. Co-op might just be "play together without dedicated mechanics."
Dice decide combat
You can mitigate with abilities and items, but in the end, you roll a die and hope. A low result costs you health points, a high one makes you win easily. If you seek total control, this is not your game: luck matters, especially in boss fights against corrupted beasts.
🏆Victory and defeatWhat the ending rewards▼
How it ends
How to win and how to lose
Each quest has specific conditions. Generally, you win by completing primary objectives, and you lose if time runs out or the doctor dies.
Victory
- Complete all quest objectives (e.g., stop the prophet, heal 3 villages)
- In competitive mode: you have more points than the other doctor at the end of the game
- In cooperative mode: you collectively meet the quest requirement
Defeat
- The doctor drops to 0 health points and has no items to heal
- The quest timer reaches zero (e.g., too many turns passed, too many villages burned)
- A specific quest condition is triggered (e.g., the cult corrupts all NPCs)
Fires of Thokaia raises the stakes of the base game: more narrative choices, nastier enemies, new modes. If you enjoyed Light in the Dark, this expansion takes you deeper. If you've never played it, start with the base game.

FAQ about Light in the Dark: Fires of Thokaia
Is the base game Light in the Dark needed to play Fires of Thokaia?
No, technically it's standalone. But many mechanics and terms are better explained in the base game, and the doctor's progression makes more sense if you've already played it. If you're starting from scratch, read the base game's rulebook first or be prepared for some confusion.
Does the 2-player cooperative mode work well?
We don't have reliable reviews testing it yet. On paper, it looks promising (you share resources and decisions), but Light in the Dark was designed for solo play: co-op is a new addition, and we don't know if it's well-integrated or just "play together without dedicated rules." We'll update as soon as we have data.
How many quests are in the expansion?
The publisher does not specify an exact number. We know there are new narrative quests with branching paths and new enemies, but we don't have the precise count. If we find out, we'll update the product page.
What mechanics does Light in the Dark: Fires of Thokaia use?
Action point management (spend actions to move, heal, fight), dice rolling for combat, modular grid movement, character progression (unlock abilities and items), branching narrative choices in quests. Solo dungeon crawler structure with a strong narrative component.
Is it available in Italian?
No, this is the English language edition. Rulebook, cards, and quest texts are in English. There are no official or fan-made Italian translations currently available.
