WHAT IT'S ABOUT
The dark castle grows darker
Cult of the Death Knight is the first expansion for Escape the Dark Castle, the atmospheric narrative cooperative game by the trio Alex Crispin, Thomas Pike and James Shelton for Themeborne. This expansion introduces a new boss—the Death Knight—his cult of fanatical adherents, and three completely new prisoners, each specializing in a characteristic: Pure Strength (Master Builder), Cunning (Hunter), Wisdom (Bishop).
In addition to the characters, the pack brings 15 new chapters exploring uncharted areas of the castle, 3 cursed item cards, and a Cultist die that you will pray you never have to roll. Everything integrates perfectly with the base game, increasing variety, difficulty, and atmosphere without overcomplicating the mechanics. It is pure cooperative play: you win or lose together, chapter after chapter, die after die.
What they say abroad
A night at the castle that makes you say things like 'we made a mistake' and 'let's roll anyway'. The expansion adds narrative weight without adding rules.

Escape the Dark Castle: Adventure Pack 1 – Cult of the Death Knight
The base game supports solo play with official rules, and this expansion integrates perfectly. You play with just one prisoner against the castle. The experience is complete and tense, but you lose the group discussions and collaborative management of special abilities—which are half the fun in multiplayer.
What's in the expansion
Three specialists, a cult, a curse
The three new prisoners
Master Builder (Strength), Hunter (Cunning), Bishop (Wisdom). Each has a custom die and a special ability that makes them dominant in one characteristic. They change the balance of the group.
15 new chapters
Unexplored areas of the castle: cursed altars, torture cells, cult chambers. They blend with the base chapters to create ever-changing paths. Some are lethal, others offer moral choices.
The Death Knight
New final boss. Lord of Decay, with his own mechanics and a die you'll never want to see. His card is a point of no return: you either win or die.
Cultist Die and Curses
Three new item cards introduce Curses: persistent afflictions that follow you for the rest of the game. The Cultist die is the symbol of the cult, and you pray you don't have to roll it.

The flow of each chapter
The expansion does not change the flow of the base game. It adds characters, chapters, a boss, and curses, but the turn structure remains the same.
Flip the top card of the pile. Read the text aloud. It can be an encounter, a trap, or a narrative choice. The new cult chapters are often more deadly.
The chapter requires a Strength, Cunning, or Wisdom roll. Decide together who has the best die for that characteristic. The three new prisoners are specialists: send them when needed.
The chosen player rolls their personal die against the chapter's die. Compare the symbols. If you win, you advance. If you lose, you take damage (lose health) or face narrative consequences. Curses activate here.
After the roll, you can use items or special abilities of the new characters. If a prisoner reaches zero health, they die: remove the character and their die. If everyone dies, you lose.

What happens at the table
Not the rules. The experience.
Choose your specialist
Each player takes one of the three new prisoners. The Hunter counts the cunning symbols on their custom die. The Bishop symbolically blesses the chapter pile. The Master Mason promises he will tear down doors with his bare hands. Everyone hopes it's true.
The first chapter reminds you that you are not safe
Reveal the first chapter. It's a new one from the expansion: a cult altar. You must decide who rolls for the group. The Bishop has high wisdom, but is already wounded. Roll. The Cultist die comes up. Someone curses. Someone else laughs nervously.
The curse strikes
Draw an item card. It's a Curse. Not a useful item: an affliction that will follow you until the end of the game or until death. Who takes it? The Master Mason offers, saying he can bear it. The group discusses. You decide together. The card goes into his inventory, face down.
The Death Knight appears
Last chapter before the boss. You've survived torture chambers, empty halls, mad cultists. You have 3 health points between the two of you, one is already dead. Flip the boss card: the Death Knight. The boss's die has faces you've never seen. Someone says 'let's try'. No one really believes it.
It ends badly (or miraculously well)
You've rolled everything you had. The Bishop used his special ability twice. The Hunter sacrificed his last life to give you an extra turn. And in the end: either you're out, exhausted but alive, or you're dead by the third round of the boss. In either case: you want to play again immediately.
🐸What to know beforehandThree honest things, from friends▼
What to know beforehand
Three things that change with this expansion
Specialists are very strong
The three new prisoners have unbalanced dice: they dominate in one characteristic, they are weak in others. The Master Mason excels at any Strength test, but is useless in Wisdom. You must balance the group and choose wisely who to send into each chapter. If you build the party poorly, the castle punishes you.
The Cultist die is a nightmare
Some expansion chapters force you to roll the Cultist die along with the chapter die. It has terrible faces: extra damage, curses, instant death. You cannot mitigate it with abilities. It's pure bad luck, and it can ruin a perfect game in one fell swoop. If you hate total luck, you've been warned.
Curses cannot be removed
The three new item cards are Curses: negative afflictions that occupy an inventory slot and penalize you for the rest of the game. You cannot discard them, you cannot pass them to others (once taken). They change the risk/benefit calculation on every narrative choice: sometimes it's better to lose health than to draw an item card.
🏆Victory and defeatWhat the ending rewards▼
How it ends
How to win and how to lose
The expansion introduces a new boss and new curses, but the victory and defeat conditions remain those of the base game.
Victory
- Defeat the final boss (in this case the Death Knight) after having gone through all the chapters
- At least one prisoner must survive the final confrontation
- Cooperative victory: the group wins, not the individual
Defeat
- All prisoners reach zero health points and die
- Some chapters or the Cultist die can cause instant death
- Some Curses make it impossible to continue (very rare but existing events)
Escape the Dark Castle grows without becoming heavy. More characters, more dangers, the same one-shot tension. If you liked the base game, this expansion doubles your nights in the castle.

FAQ about Escape the Dark Castle: Adventure Pack 1 – Cult of the Death Knight
Is the base game required to play this expansion?
Yes, it is mandatory. Cult of the Death Knight is an Adventure Pack, not a standalone game: it adds characters, chapters, and a boss, but you need the base game Escape the Dark Castle to play. Without the base box, you don't have enough chapters, items, or the fundamental rules.
Can I play only with the new characters or do I have to mix them with the base ones?
You can do both. The three new prisoners (Bishop, Hunter, Master Mason) are balanced to play alongside the four from the base game, but you can also play a game entirely with the new ones. They are more specialized than the base characters: very strong in one characteristic, weak in others.
How much more difficult is this expansion compared to the base game?
More difficult, but not by much. The new chapters are on average more deadly, and the Cultist die introduces brutal spikes of bad luck. The Death Knight as a boss is tougher than the base bosses. If you often won with the base game, this expansion will make you lose again for a while. If you were already struggling, expect frustrations.
What mechanics does Escape the Dark Castle: Cult of the Death Knight use?
Cooperative dice rolling, push your luck, storytelling. Each chapter is a dice roll (comparison between character die and chapter die), with narrative choices between chapters. The expansion adds special abilities to the new characters and the Cultist die (a cursed die that is added to rolls in certain chapters), but the core remains: roll dice, make decisions, hope to get out alive.
Is it available in Italian?
Yes, this edition from Ghenos Games is completely in Italian: chapter cards, character cards, rulebook, everything translated. The dice are custom but text-free (symbols only), so there's no language issue with the components.
