FroGames — Moments You'll Remember
Someone goes all-in on coal. Someone else bribes a politician. And by the end of the evening, you discover that the biggest empire was built by the one with the least obvious plan.
WHAT IT'S ABOUT
Building an industrial empire when everything is still to be written
India, 1981. Independence from colonial rule left a country to rebuild. Industrial families, bureaucrats, and politicians—working together or against each other—ignited a new industrial revolution following five-year plans. Now, liberalization and globalization have removed the bureaucratic barriers that hindered development. It's the dawn of a new era. Sidhant Chand brings this historical tension to the table with a design that balances economics, politics, and geography. The illustrations by Trisha Bose and Chandrasekhar Poudyal accurately and carefully portray India of those years.
You represent a large Indian industrial family. Your goal is to dominate the six key sectors of the economy: minerals, fuel, agriculture, energy, transport, and finance. You obtain rights from the government through sealed bids, build factories on the map of India, take out loans, invest in stocks, and influence national policies. But it's not enough to be rich: you must balance wealth and fame, because in the end, the winner is the one who played both sides best. And political votes can break ties.
This is the Definitive Edition, the most complete version of Tycoon: India 1981 published to date: all exclusive Kickstarter content is now included in the box, along with corrected rules, refined components, and improvements based on feedback from the first print run.

Tycoon: India 1981 — Definitive Edition
In this Definitive Edition, the solo experience takes a leap: in addition to the official rules with a card-driven automa simulating opponents, the box includes the solo campaign book. The experience is complete and allows exploring all mechanics, but it loses the psychological tension of sealed bids against other players. Ideal for those who want to master strategies—and now it also has a dedicated solo campaign to tackle.
Your tools to dominate India
What you have in hand to build an empire
Industrial Rights
Win sealed bids to obtain rights from the government. Each sector has a different value depending on the region. And whoever gets there first controls the market.
Map of India
Geography matters. Building factories in the right regions gives you economic and political advantages. But each state has its own rules.
Loans and Investments
You can take out loans to accelerate. Or invest in shares of other sectors. But every debt has a cost, and every investment has a risk.
National Policies
You influence national policies to favor your sectors. And you accumulate political votes that can break ties. Politics is not optional.

In a few hours, you'll know if you've built an empire or just a collection of debts. And you'll understand that wealth isn't enough.
A game in five moments
What happens at the table
Not the rules. The experience.
The map is empty, ambitions are not
Everyone looks at the map of India. Six industrial sectors. Infinite possibilities. You've already chosen where to build your first factory, but you don't know what others are thinking. The sealed bids are about to begin.
The first loan
Someone takes out the first loan. Others look at them with suspicion. Is it a bold move or a desperate one? Debt accelerates, but it comes at a cost. And you have to decide whether to follow suit or wait. Timing is everything.
Politics comes into play
National policies are activated. Someone has influenced the government to favor the energy sector. Others must adapt. Political votes suddenly become valuable. And the map fills with factories.
The sector worth double
You discover that the sector you focused on is worth double in this region. Or you discover that you've ignored it completely. Someone is dominating three sectors. You control only one. But you have more wealth and more fame. Who is winning?
The final count
Wealth plus fame. Political votes resolve ties. Someone had a hidden plan no one saw. Someone else won because they balanced the two tracks better. And you realize you should have taken that loan.
How to play
The flow of each round
A series of rounds where auctions, construction, and politics intertwine until the final count.
Everyone secretly writes their bid for the industrial rights to a sector. The highest bidder wins the right and can build factories. Low bids are discarded.
Those who won the rights build factories on the map of India. Each factory costs resources and advances the sector track. Regions have different bonuses.
You can take out loans, invest in shares, influence national policies. Each action has a cost and a benefit. And activated policies change the value of sectors.
You receive income from built factories. You advance on the wealth and fame tracks. Political votes accumulate. The round ends and it is assessed whether the game continues.
Why it's different from others
Six mechanics that make a difference
Sealed bids, not open
Auctions are simultaneous and secret. You cannot react to others' bids. You must read the table and bet. Making a mistake in an auction is costly. And winning it too expensively, also.
Wealth vs. fame
The one with the most money doesn't win. The one who combines wealth and fame wins. You can be rich but unknown, or famous but poor. You must balance both. And this tension accompanies you until the end.
Geography matters
Not all regions are equally valuable. Some give economic bonuses, others political. Building in the right place at the right time is half the strategy. The map is your battlefield.
Variable national policies
Each game activates different policies. One might favor the energy sector, another penalize loans. Policies change the value of your moves. And you must adapt.
Loans as an accelerator
You can take out loans to build faster. But each loan has a cost and an impact on the wealth track. Using them well accelerates. Abusing them sinks you.
Cross investments
You can invest in shares of sectors controlled by your opponents. If those sectors grow, you also gain. It's a way to mitigate risk. Or to complicate others' plans.
How it ends
How to win and how to lose
The game ends after a variable number of rounds, when the main tracks reach certain thresholds.
Victory
- Sum your wealth score and your fame score
- Add bonuses for dominated sectors and built factories
- Whoever has the highest total wins. Political votes resolve ties
Defeat
- You accumulated too much debt without generating enough wealth
- You ignored fame and fell behind on the track
- You dominated one sector, but others balanced wealth and fame better
A game where planning matters more than improvising. And where you discover that building an empire requires more than just wealth.
Frequently asked questions
FAQ on Tycoon: India 1981 — Definitive Edition
What does the Definitive Edition include compared to the first edition?
It is the most complete version published to date. In a single box, you'll find the base game, the main exclusive content from the Kickstarter campaign, the solo mode with a campaign book for single-player, and the asset value dials (industry dials), plus unlocked content. Additionally, there are rules corrections, refined components, and usability improvements based on feedback from the first print run. The standard version, on the other hand, does not include the exclusive Kickstarter content: if you are looking for the no-compromise version, this is it.
How complex is it compared to other economic games?
Complexity 3.8 out of 5. It is not a game for beginners. It requires managing six industrial sectors, sealed bids, loans, investments, and politics. If you've played Brass: Birmingham or Food Chain Magnate, you're in the right territory. If not, prepare for a slow first game.
Do sealed bids really work?
Yes, and they are the heart of the game. You cannot react to others' bids. You must read the table, understand how much that right is worth to you, and bet. Open auctions are more interactive, sealed bids are more psychological. And riskier.
Does it scale well from 1 to 4 players?
It scales well. The solo mode has dedicated rules with an automa system that simulates opponents, and in this Definitive Edition, it also includes a campaign book to play solo. With 2 players, it's more controllable but loses some of the auction tension. With 3-4 players, the chaos increases, and auctions become unpredictable. The ideal is 3 players.
How long does a game last?
From 60 to 180 minutes, depending on the group's experience and the number of players. The first game will be closer to 3 hours. Once you know the mechanics, 90-120 minutes is realistic. Solo play is faster, about 60-90 minutes.
Is it available in Italian?
No, this edition is in English. Texts on cards, board, and rulebook are in English. Language dependency is medium: you need to read political cards and events, but once the mechanics are understood, the game flows. A good understanding of written English is required.
