FroGames — Moments You'll Remember
Someone will return with a scar and a story. Someone will not return at all. And at the end of the ritual, only one will be remembered as the Guardian.
WHAT IT'S ABOUT
An ancient ritual to choose who will protect the valley from darkness
The equinox is approaching, and the Green Valley fills with crowds. It's time for the Rite of the Forest, the ancient ceremony that selects a new Guardian from among the bravest. Designed by Giancarlo Spinelli and illustrated by Anna "Mikado" Przybylska, Trial of the Forest is a card, dice, and exploration game that intertwines mechanics and narrative.
At the table, you gather resources, play cards, face opponents, and embark on risky expeditions. Each card played defines your deeds and builds your personal story. At the end of the ritual, your choices will be your legacy: victory or oblivion depends on how much you dared in the forest.
What they say abroad
Every game leaves a different story on the table, written by choices and dice.
— FroGames
The Rite does not select the strongest. It selects those who know when to risk everything.

The Trial of the Forest
What you take with you into the forest
The tools of the ritual
Action Cards
Each card represents a choice, an undertaking, a moment that defines who you are. Play them to build your story and advance in the ritual.
Risk Dice
Roll when you venture into dangerous areas. The result determines if you return triumphant or wounded. Sometimes, losing a die makes for the best story.
Guardian's Path
The track that marks your progress towards the title. Every step forward is a trial overcome, every stop a critical moment of choice.
Expeditions
Missions into the dark forest. They require resources, courage, and a bit of luck. Turning back means safety. Going forward means legend.
In a few hours, one of you will be the Guardian. The others will have a great story to tell. In Trial of the Forest, even losing makes for a good evening.
A game in five moments
What happens at the table
Not the rules. The experience.
Preparation
Everyone chooses their character and draws their starting cards. The table is buzzing with anticipation. Someone reads the introductory text of the ritual aloud, and the Green Valley takes shape among the cards. The game begins.
The first expeditions
Someone immediately embarks on a risky mission. Dice roll, someone shouts, someone curses. The first wound arrives early, and the table understands that the ritual is serious. The cautious accumulate resources. The brave accumulate scars.
The crossroads
Mid-game. Someone is in the lead, but has spent almost everything. Someone is behind but has a hand full of powerful cards. The Guardian's track lengthens, and everyone understands that there are two or three key moves left to close. The tension rises.
The moment that changes everything
A desperate expedition. Someone rolls all their remaining dice, betting everything on a single card. The result is epic (in one way or another). The table explodes. This is the scene that will be recounted later, the one that defines the game.
The proclamation
Someone reaches the last space on the track. The ritual is complete. The others count their points, but they already know who won. They reread the played cards, reconstructing the story of the new Guardian. And they immediately plan their revenge.
How to play
The flow of each round
Each turn is a cycle of choices, resources, and action. The structure is simple; the decisions are not.
You draw cards and collect the tokens needed for actions. The more resources you have, the more options you'll have. But time is running out.
Choose which cards to play from your hand. Each card represents an action, an undertaking, or a tactical move. Played cards remain in front of you and build your narrative.
You face opponents or embark on expeditions. Dice determine the outcome. Win? You advance and gain rewards. Lose? You take damage or lose progress.
Move your token along the Guardian's path. Each step forward brings you closer to victory, but requires sacrifices and calculated risks.
Why it's different from others
Six mechanics that make a difference
Emergent story
The cards you play are not just mechanics: they are your biography. At the end of the game, you can reread your character's journey as if it were a story. Each game leaves a unique narrative, written by your choices.
Dice with consequences
You don't just roll dice randomly. You know exactly what you risk before you roll. You can decide to put everything on the line or play it safe. The die is controlled tension, not blind chaos.
Modular expeditions
Each game features different expeditions. Some require strength, others cunning, others luck. There is no single strategy: you must adapt to what the forest offers you.
Direct combat
You can clash with opponents to slow them down or steal resources. It's not a solitary multiplayer game: interactions are concrete, tactical, and often decisive.
Asymmetrical paths
Not all characters advance in the same way. Each has strengths and weaknesses. The ritual rewards those who can leverage their talent, not those who follow the most obvious path.
Theme that works
The forest, the ritual, the darkness: they are not mere decorations. Mechanics and theme support each other. When you play, you are truly in that valley, truly in that ritual. And at the end of the evening, you remember it.
How it ends
How to win and how to lose
The ritual has ancient rules. Only those who respect them can become Guardian.
Victory
- Be the first to reach the last space on the Guardian's track
- Accumulate enough feat points by completing legendary expeditions
- Eliminate all opponents and remain the sole challenger standing
Elimination
- Suffer too much damage during expeditions and be eliminated from the ritual
- Run out of resources and can no longer perform significant actions
- An opponent defeats you in direct combat and removes you from the competition
Trial of the Forest is not just a game of cards and dice. It's a story generator, a narrative engine that transforms simple mechanics into memorable evenings.
Frequently asked questions
FAQ about The Trial of the Forest
Is it a difficult game to learn?
No. The basic mechanics (collect, play cards, roll dice, advance) can be understood in 10-15 minutes. The first game is already fluid. The depth emerges later, when you understand when to risk and when to conserve resources.
How much does dice luck matter?
It matters, but it doesn't dominate. You decide when to roll and how much to risk. Dice add tension and unpredictability, but an experienced player wins more often than an unlucky one. Risk management is the real skill.
Does it work well with 2 players?
Yes. With two, the duel is more direct and tactical. With three or four, chaos and temporary alliances increase. Both configurations work, but the experience is different: more strategic with two, more narrative and unpredictable with four.
Is it a competitive or cooperative game?
Competitive. Everyone wants to become the Guardian. You can directly clash with opponents, sabotage their expeditions, or slow them down. There are no teams, only challengers.
Is it available in Italian?
Yes. This Asmodee edition is completely in Italian: cards, rulebook, components. Everything translated and localized.
