Supplement for The One Ring, second edition
Hobbit Tales
"No Rings to destroy. Just the Shire, a lit pipe, and five hobbit-sized stories to tell."
What it's about
Five hobbit-sized stories, and all of the Shire to explore
Hobbit Tales is a supplement for The One Ring, Free League's award-winning RPG set in Middle-earth, second edition. It's the sweetest way to take your first steps into Tolkien's world: no Ring, no Nazgûl, just the adventures hobbits end up living when they just can't avoid them.
Inside you'll find an accurate description of the four Farthings of the Shire and five ready-to-play adventures. You can play them as famous hobbits (or their ancestors): Bilbo Baggins himself, Paladin Took, Rory, and Primula Brandybuck. In the stories, the hobbits help Bilbo with research for his book.
The tone of Hobbit Tales is lighthearted and bucolic, far from the epic drama of the saga: quiet, warm stories set in the Shire long before the War of the Ring. It's designed for beginners and for groups who want a peaceful breather between campaigns. An honest note follows below, because this content already has an editorial history.
"In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit."
J.R.R. Tolkien, opening line of The Hobbit
What they say abroad
"Your players should find the adventures to be fun."
Your players will find the adventures enjoyable.
The Gaming Gang
No Ring, no Nazgûl: just the Shire, five hobbit-sized stories, and the feeling of coming home before the journey begins.
The point in a nutshell · FroGames
Four tables, one book
Who this supplement is really for
Hobbit Tales is not an epic adventure: it's an invitation to the Shire. And it has something concrete to offer four very different types of players.
If it's your first step into Middle-earth
Ready-made characters, light rules, and five stories to open and play. You don't have to build anything: choose a hobbit, light your pipe, and off you go. It's the gentlest way to discover how The One Ring works.
If you're looking for a relaxed game
The Shire before the storm: no armies, no catastrophes around the corner. Warm and curious stories, perfect for a quiet evening, ideal when the group wants a breather between two darker campaigns.
If you love the Shire and Bilbo
The four Farthings described with care, and adventures in which hobbits help Bilbo Baggins with research for his book. For those who love The Hobbit especially for its beginning: home, garden, the quiet before the journey.
If you are a Loremaster
Five ready adventures and a guide to the Shire to keep on your shelf. Low-prep material, useful as a light interlude or as a setting for your own hobbit stories.
Hobbit Tales
What you'll find in the book
Four pillars of Hobbit Tales
The Four Farthings
An accurate description of the Shire divided into its four Farthings: villages, paths, woods, and hidden corners, ready to explore or use as a backdrop for your own stories.
Five ready-to-play adventures
Five immediately playable stories where hobbits help Bilbo Baggins with research for his book. Short, warm, perfect for a single evening or a small series.
Pregenerated Hobbits
Ready-to-use characters, including famous hobbits (or their ancestors): Bilbo Baggins, Paladin Took, Rory, and Primula Brandybuck. No character creation: choose and play.
The Shire before the journey
A deliberately light and wholesome tone, set long before the War of the Ring. Middle-earth in its most serene version, to be enjoyed unhurriedly.
Honesty first and foremost
What you WON'T find in Hobbit Tales
We'll tell you before, not after purchase. Hobbit Tales is a supplement dedicated to the Shire, not a complete manual. Here's what it doesn't contain, so you know exactly what you're buying.
New content, if you already have the Starter Set
The guide to the Shire, the five adventures, and the pre-generated characters were already in the first The One Ring 2E Starter Set. If you own that box, you won't find new material here: it's the same content collected in a separate volume.
The complete core rulebook
Hobbit Tales is a supplement. To create your own hobbits and play beyond the included adventures, you need the The One Ring 2E core rulebook (or a Starter Set from the line).
An Italian edition
The book is in English. A minimum familiarity with English as played at the table is needed, covering proper nouns, Shire locations, and mechanics.
Epic battles and grand fights
No Ring, no armies, no Nazgûl. The tone is deliberately light and domestic: if you're looking for the drama of the War of the Ring, you won't find it here, and that's a deliberate choice.
The accessories from the Starter Set box
The original Starter Set had dice, a large map, cards, and simplified rules. Hobbit Tales is the book: the guide to the Shire and the adventures, not the physical components of the box.
A long, connected campaign
The five adventures are short and largely independent, linked by Bilbo's research. Don't expect a single grand campaign with an arc spanning dozens of sessions.
No surprises
To bring it to the table, you only need this
✅ You need…
- This volume plus the The One Ring 2E core rulebook
- The One Ring dice (d12 Feat die and d6 Success dice)
- 2 to 4 friends and a Loremaster
- A desire for a lighthearted evening in the Shire
❌ You do NOT need…
- Character creation: hobbits are already ready
- The first Starter Set 2E (if you have it, you already have this content)
- Previous experience with role-playing games
- To know Tolkien's books by heart
If it's your first time at a The One Ring table, start with one of the pre-generated hobbits and the first adventure: light rules, no character sheet to build, just enough time to get familiar with the dice. And before buying it, check one thing: if you already own the first Starter Set 2E, you already have this content. In that case, it's better to aim for an expansion that truly adds something new.
"Before the Ring, before the Shadow, there was only the Shire: a garden, a pipe, and all the time in the world. Tonight, that world is open on your table again."
🗺️The Four Farthings of the ShireThe geography that forms the backdrop to the stories
The heart of the Shire
The most populous and familiar part: Hobbiton, Bywater, Michel Delving, and Tuckborough. The classic landscape of rolling hills, gardens, and round doors.
Towards Brandywine
The wet lands near the river, the Marish and Stock, up to the borders with Buckland. More secluded and a bit wilder than the rest of the Shire.
The land of pipe-weed
The warmest and sunniest, home to the best pipe-weed in the Shire, around Longbottom. Gentle hills and cultivated fields.
The quiet lands
The coldest and least inhabited, towards the northern moors. Open and silent spaces, where hobbits rarely venture.

The First Session
How the story might begin at your table
The Invitation
Bilbo Baggins needs a hand with his book. He asks you to gather stories, rumors, and curiosities from all four Farthings.
The Departure
You start from Hobbiton: a hearty breakfast, a pipe in your pocket, and the paths of the Shire before you. No rush, no mortal dangers.
Through the Farthings
Markets, meddling relatives, old village legends. Hobbit adventures arise from small things, and here they are all waiting to be discovered.
A Little Trouble
Every story has its hiccup: a runaway animal, a neighborhood mystery, a mess you stumble into unintentionally. It's solved with cunning and good heart.
Return Home
You return to Bilbo with a full notebook and a story to tell. The Shire is at peace again, and you are a little fonder of these great little heroes.
From the box to the table
How to organize a session

Explore the Shire
Use the guide to the four Farthings to add flavor: villages, inns, relatives, and gossip always at hand.

Relaxed tone, calm pace, gentle rules. You play for the story and for the pleasure of being in the Shire.
