FroGames — Moments You'll Remember
Every game starts with sleeping warriors. It ends with one wondering how they lost with the King on their side.
WHAT IT IS ABOUT
A ritual battle of the Sami people that has spanned a thousand years
In the northern regions of Scandinavia, the indigenous Sami people have passed down a war game called Sahkku for centuries. So important in their culture that there are annual tournaments and prestigious trophies for those who master it. A game that could be over a thousand years old, where two groups of warriors face each other in a battle that blends fate and tactics. Art by Lívia Varga and David McCord, produced by Lemery Games in the LUDOS Europe series dedicated to traditional games of the continent.
At the start, your warriors are sleeping. You must awaken them with precise dice combinations before they can enter battle. Once awake, they move along defined paths, capture enemies by occupying their positions, but can be blocked and sent back to base camp. And there's a treacherous King who switches sides to whoever captures him, changing the balance at the least expected moment.
What they say abroad
A game worth rediscovering: the tension of awakening and the King that changes everything.
— FroGames
Sahkku brings the living history of the Sami people to the table. Every game is a piece of culture.

The elements of the battlefield
What you find in the ritual box
Sleeping Warriors
Two factions of fighters that start the game asleep. They must be awakened with specific dice rolls before they can enter battle. Whoever awakens first has the initial advantage.
The Treacherous King
A special piece that belongs to no one until someone captures it. When it changes hands, it brings unique powers and can tip the balance. Controlling it is crucial, losing it is devastating.
Dice of Destiny
They determine which warriors you can awaken and how far they can move. Specific combinations unlock different actions. A bad roll at the wrong time leaves you stuck watching.
War Paths
The board (or traditional cloth) shows the tracks along which warriors move. Occupying an enemy's position captures them. Being blocked sends you back to the start.
Half an hour from now, you'll be cursing the King who just switched sides. It always happens with Sahkku.
A game in five acts
What happens at the table
Not the rules. The experience.
The ritual awakening
Your warriors lie dormant in the starting area. You roll the dice looking for the right combination to awaken them. Your opponent does the same. Whoever succeeds first takes control of the rhythm, but the dice don't always cooperate. Tension rises with every bad roll.
First moves, first blocks
The first awakened warriors begin to advance along the paths. You occupy an enemy space and capture. But your opponent can block you and send you back to base. Every step is a decision: push forward or consolidate your defense? The King is still neutral, but everyone is watching him.
The race for the King
Someone captures the King and brings him to their side. Suddenly, he has special powers that change the rules. Whoever doesn't control him must reorganize quickly. The dice decide if you can counterattack or remain still and suffer. High tension.
The betrayal
The King is captured by the other player. He switches allegiance and brings his abilities with him. Whoever loses him sees the hard-won advantage crumble. Whoever takes him must seize the moment before the dice turn again. This is the turn you'll remember.
Victory or defeat
One of the two players eliminates enough enemy warriors or definitively controls the King. The game ends, but the desire for revenge is immediate. The loser wants to understand where they went wrong. The winner knows that the dice might betray them next time.
How to play
The flow of each turn
A simple rhythm punctuated by dice and tactical choices.
You roll the dice and observe the combination you got. Some combinations awaken dormant warriors, others allow movement or captures. If no warrior is yet awake, you must hit the right result to start.
If you have the right combination, you awaken a warrior and place it on the board. If you already have active warriors, you move them along the defined paths on the board. Movement is limited by the dice roll result.
If you end your movement on an enemy warrior's space, you capture and eliminate it. If the enemy blocks you by occupying a key space, you are sent back to base. The King follows special rules: capturing him means bringing him to your side.
Your opponent rolls the dice and takes their turn. The game continues until one player eliminates enough enemies or achieves a victory condition related to the King.
Why it's different from others
Six elements that make it unique
Dormant warriors
No other abstract game starts with inactive pieces. You must awaken them with specific dice rolls before they can fight. This creates an asymmetric opening where whoever hits the right numbers first dominates the start. The frustration of rolling badly while your opponent deploys is real.
The turncoat King
The King starts neutral and switches to the side of whoever captures him. He is not a normal pawn: he has special powers that change the dynamics. Controlling him is fundamental, losing him is a disaster. This unique piece transforms Sahkku from a classic abstract game into an unpredictable battle.
Dice decide everything
Most abstract games eliminate luck. Sahkku embraces it. Dice determine when you awaken, how much you move, if you can attack. Tactics lie in maximizing every result, but a bad roll blocks you. Those who hate randomness will stay away, those who love it will find pure tension.
Point-to-point movement
You don't move freely: you follow fixed paths on the board. Each warrior has a defined track. This limits options but makes every choice tactical: which path you defend, where you block, when you attack. Less freedom, more depth in positions.
Capture by occupation
No complex combat resolution. End your movement on an enemy space and capture. Simple, direct, brutal. But your opponent can block you first and send you back to base. Every advance is a calculated risk.
Millennial Sami history
Sahkku is not a game invented yesterday. It is a piece of indigenous Scandinavian culture with annual tournaments and centuries-old tradition. Playing it means experiencing a living heritage firsthand. The traditional fabric as a board and wooden pawns reinforce its historical identity.
How it ends
How to win and how to lose
Victory comes through elimination or control of the King.
Victory
- You eliminate a sufficient number of enemy warriors by capturing them
- You definitively gain and maintain control of the King
- Your opponent no longer has active pieces on the board
Elimination
- Your warriors are captured and you have no more pieces in play
- Your opponent controls the King and you cannot regain him
- You are repeatedly blocked and sent back to base without being able to advance
Sahkku is a journey into Sami culture that uniquely blends luck and tactics. The treacherous King and dormant warriors create moments no other abstract game offers.
Frequently Asked Questions
Sahkku FAQ
How much does luck count compared to strategy?
The dice have a significant impact: they determine when you awaken warriors and how much you move. You can't do anything without favorable rolls. That said, tactics lie in maximizing every result and in warrior positioning. If you hate randomness, this game will frustrate you. If you accept it as part of the ritual, you'll find depth.
Does the King really change the game so much?
Yes. The King has special powers that no other piece possesses and can be captured multiple times in the same game, changing allegiance. Controlling him is fundamental; losing him is devastating. Many games are decided by the race for the King at the critical moment.
Is it suitable for those looking for a pure abstract game without luck?
No. Sahkku uses dice as a central element, not as a condiment. If you want a deterministic abstract game like Go or Chess, this is not for you. It's perfect for those seeking an accessible abstract game with a strong historical identity and who aren't afraid of unpredictability.
How long does a game actually last?
Between 30 and 45 minutes, but it heavily depends on the dice. If one player quickly awakens warriors and dominates, they can finish in half an hour. If both struggle with rolls or the King changes hands often, it can reach 45 minutes. However, it's never over an hour, even with slow players.
Is it available in Italian?
This edition is in English. The rules are simple, and language dependence is minimal: the game primarily uses pawns and dice. The rulebook is clear and easily translatable if needed.
