FroGames — Games that last
Japan industrializes. You decide who will lead the transformation — and who will be left behind.
What it's about
19th-century Japanese economy in a box
We are in Meiji Restoration Japan: the country opens up to the world, industries emerge, and industrial conglomerates — the zaibatsu — compete for markets, railways, and political influence. Designed by Nuno Bizarro Sentieiro and Paulo Soledade, with illustrations by Maya Kurkhuli, Nippon: Zaibatsu is the deeply revamped reissue of the 2015 classic.
Build factories, boost production, supply local markets, complete contracts, and develop your railways. Each turn, you choose a worker from the hiring area: the type of worker determines the available action, the moment you choose them defines the strategy. Then, when the time is right, you consolidate — reaping the fruits of your labor and deciding which aspects of your zaibatsu will bring victory points at the end of the game.
The Emperor's Edition adds premium silk-screened wooden components, 30 new double-sided factories, common objectives, an automa for solo play, and a modular plastic organizer. All the core of the original game, with ten years of design refinement.
Nippon: Zaibatsu — Emperor's Edition
The automa replicates the majority pressure in the regions. A good alternative when playing alone, but the game is best with 3–4 players competing for the same markets.
What's in the box
The Emperor's Edition — what's new
30 new double-sided factories
Each factory tile has two sides with different effects — immediate bonuses or permanent modifiers. No game will have the same production setup.
Silk-screened wooden components
Resources and tokens in wood with hot stamping — aesthetically distinct, pleasant to the touch. Premium production that enhances immersion at the table.
Automa for solo play
An artificial opponent that replicates majority pressure in the regions. Complete and challenging — for playing even without company.
Modular plastic organizer
Compartments with lids for each type of component. Quick setup and tidy storage — a detail appreciated after the third game.
A classic of modern eurogames, redesigned to last another ten years. Japan awaits its most capable industrialist.

📜 REGOLAMENTO
A game in five moments
What happens at the table
Not the rules. The experience.
Japan opens to the world
The map is set up, each player chooses starting tokens and decides where to focus: textiles, metalworking, railways? Even in setup, you can tell who's aiming for what. The first action hasn't even been taken yet, but plans are already in conflict.
The production engine takes shape
Players begin to hire workers, build the first factories, supply local markets. Each action is quick — but the choice of which worker to take defines what you'll do in the next round. The engine starts slowly and inexorably.
The first Consolidation — the choice that changes everything
Someone decides to consolidate: they collect income, gain bonuses — and choose what to focus on at the end of the period. That choice reveals that player's victory strategy. Others adapt. The game changes shape. From here on, every move has a precise objective.
The fight for majorities
Two players focus on the same region. One builds infrastructure, the other saturates the local market with manufactured goods. Whoever controls the majority gains points and bonuses. Whoever loses the majority in the last round of the period — after months of work — already knows they need to change their plan next turn.
The Emperor delivers the verdict
End of the third period. Points are tallied: railways, technology, foreign researchers, regional majorities. The winner is often only revealed in the final count. Everything is put back in the modular organizer, someone suggests a rematch — with a different strategy.
How to play
The flow of each turn
Three periods composed of variable rounds. Learn in twenty minutes, master in three games.
Take a worker from the hiring area linked to the action you want to perform. The worker's color determines the department — and will affect consolidation bonuses. If you empty the space, the round is nearing its end.
Nine actions available: build a factory, produce goods, supply a market, develop technology, build railways or ships, recruit foreign experts, invest in R&D. Each action is immediate — no blocking by other players.
If you don't want to or can't take a worker, you consolidate. You collect income, get bonuses based on the colors of the hired workers, and choose which aspect of your zaibatsu will give you victory points at the end of the period. A move where timing is crucial.
When the worker queue empties for the second time, the period ends. The scoring phase is performed: railways, majorities, advanced factories, common objectives. Three periods in total, then the game ends with the final count.
Why it's different from others
Six mechanics that make a difference
Worker placement without blocking
Actions are not blocked between players. Anyone can perform any action at any time — but taking certain workers before others changes the balance of the round. The pressure is temporal, not spatial.
Victory points you decide
There is no single path to victory. With each consolidation, you choose which aspects of your zaibatsu will give you points at the end of the period — railways, technology, research, production. Strategy is built during the game.
Regional majorities
Supplying local markets grants influence in the regions. Whoever controls the majority at the end of the period gets bonuses and points. The fight for regions adds a layer of direct tension within an otherwise quietly competitive game.
30 double-sided factories
Each session offers a different factory setup — some with immediate effects, others with permanent modifiers. There is no predetermined optimal strategy: you have to adapt to what the table offers.
Railways, ships, and the Iwakura Mission
Infrastructure isn't just about points — it connects factories to markets and opens up Iwakura missions, a revised ship system in the Emperor's Edition that brings a new dynamic of international export.
10 years of history, modern design
Nippon was born in 2015 and established itself as one of the most elegant eurogames of the decade. Zaibatsu retains all the core of the original design and reworks the mechanics that were showing their age. The result is a mature and refined game.
How it ends
Three ways to win, one to lose
It's not enough to build the most powerful engine — you have to build it in the right sectors, at the right time, before someone else takes the majority from you.
Victory
- Accumulate the most victory points at the end of the third period
- Points from: regional majorities, railways, advanced factories, R&D, objectives chosen at consolidations
- Additional common objectives (Emperor's Edition) award extra bonuses to the most efficient players
Where you lose
- Consolidating too late — leaving victory points on the table for one turn too many
- Ignoring regional majorities that others are quietly gaining
- Investing in factories without ever supplying markets — producing without ever selling
Nippon: Zaibatsu Emperor's Edition is one of the most elegant and profound eurogames of recent years. If you love building economic engines with real tension, this is the game for you — available on FroGames with fast delivery in Italy.
Frequently asked questions
FAQ about Nippon: Zaibatsu
What distinguishes it from other economic eurogames?
The consolidation system — which allows you to choose what to focus on in each period — makes every game structurally different. Add worker placement without blocking, the fight for majorities in the regions, and variable double-sided factories: the result is a eurogame that combines engine building and area control in a way few others can.
Is it worth it compared to the original Nippon from 2015?
Yes, if you don't already own the original game. Zaibatsu retains all the core of the classic design — quick worker drafting, area control over markets, the timing of consolidations — and adds more variable mechanics, premium components, and a solo automa. Those who already have the old Nippon must evaluate how much the improvements weigh against the upgrade cost.
Is it suitable for those starting with heavy eurogames?
It depends on the basic experience. The individual rules are not complex, but the game requires medium-term planning ability and reading opponents' moves. Those who already have some heavy eurogames under their belt (Brass, Terra Mystica, Vital Lacerda) will find it accessible. For those starting with light eurogames, a guided first game is better.
With how many players does it work best?
With 3–4 players, competition for regions is at its peak and consolidations become true tactical choices. With 2 players, the game becomes more tactical and geometric — both contenders have almost complete visibility of opponent's plans. With 1 player, the automa offers a solid challenge. The 4-player setup is what the designers had in mind.
Are there compatible expansions?
The Emperor's Edition is a complete re-release that already includes many extra contents compared to the base version. Expansions from the old Nippon (2015) are not compatible. Any new content for Zaibatsu is in development — follow the Cranio Creations website for updates.
What language is this edition in?
This is the Italian edition distributed by Cranio Creations. Texts on cards and rules are in Italian. The game is language-dependent on the cards and factory texts — the Italian edition fully addresses this aspect.
