FroGames — Moments You'll Remember
In thirty minutes, someone will have solved the sword's puzzle, someone else will still be looking for the right code, and all of you will have passed cards around at least three times, wondering how you didn't see it before.
WHAT IT'S ABOUT
A journey into feudal Japan, thirty cards, and a ruthless timer
The Way of the Katana is an adventure from the Unlock! Short Adventures series, designed by Cyril Demaegd and Vincent Goyat for Space Cowboys. It takes you to the Kamakura period, between the 12th and 14th centuries, in the shoes of a samurai woman. The historical setting is evocative but accessible: no prior knowledge required, just a desire to immerse yourself in a story.
At the table, you pass cards, search for hidden clues, combine numbers and objects to unlock new information. The free Unlock! app keeps the timer, confirms the correct codes, and gives you hints if you get lost. Everything is cooperative: you win together or lose together. Declared difficulty 2 out of 3, so it's accessible even to those who have never played paper escape rooms.
What they say abroad
Unlock! Short Adventures condenses everything we love about the series into a quicker, more accessible format.
— FroGames
Thirty cards are enough to create tension, satisfaction, and that moment when everything finally makes sense.

Unlock! - Short Adventures - The Way of the Katana
The game works great solo: all the mechanics remain identical, the only difference is that you don't have anyone to share the eureka moments with. The app handles everything, so technically it's a complete experience. It only loses the energy of a full table when someone shouts 'I got it!'
What you'll find in the deck
Thirty cards, endless paths
Location Cards
Represent locations, objects, or characters. Each has a number: combining them in specific ways unlocks new cards. Some numbers are hidden in the illustration details.
Machine Cards
The actual puzzles: codes to decipher, sequences to reconstruct, logic to infer. Enter the code into the app and find out if you've solved it or if you need to try again.
Penalty Cards
Wrong combinations or failed attempts result in drawing these cards. They cost valuable time on the timer. Making too many mistakes can cost you the win.
Item Cards
Represent tools you can 'use' by combining them with other cards. A flashlight plus a dark cave, a key plus a locked door. Intuitive but not trivial logic.
In half an hour, someone will have solved the last puzzle. Or they'll be staring at the expired timer, wondering where that darn clue was.
A game in five moments
What happens at the table
Not the rules. The experience.
The sealed deck
Open the app, start the timer, draw the first cards. There's a samurai woman, a path in the forest, a mysterious symbol. Someone reads aloud, someone else studies the details of the illustrations. Time is ticking.
The first code
You've combined two numbers and the app tells you it's correct. You draw a new card, unlock a new location. There's a moment of collective satisfaction, then immediately the next question: what do we do now?
The block
Fifteen minutes have passed and you have six cards on the table, but no combination works. Someone suggests random codes, someone else rereads everything from the beginning. The timer becomes deafening. Then someone notices a detail that has always been there.
The cascade of cards
One card leads to the next, then another. In three minutes you draw five new cards and the puzzle starts to take shape. You understand the logic of the adventure. Now you're racing towards the end.
The final code
Enter the final code. The app tells you if you've won or lost, it tells you the epilogue of the story. There's a moment of silence, then the comments start: 'I knew it', 'I didn't see that number', 'We could have done it in twenty minutes'. Game over.
How to play
The flow of each turn
There are no real turns. It's a continuous conversation as the timer runs.
All drawn cards remain visible to everyone. Look for numbers, symbols, hidden details in the illustrations. Each card has at least one printed number, some have hidden ones.
Do you think two numbers should be combined? Add them up and draw the corresponding card from the deck. If it's correct, you've unlocked something. If it's a penalty, you've made a mistake and lose time.
Some cards represent machines or puzzles that require a code. Enter it into the app: it will tell you if it's correct and what happens. Incorrect codes trigger penalties on the timer.
When you have solved all the puzzles and reached the end, enter the final code. The app reveals if you have won, how long it took you, and how the samurai's story concludes.
Why it's different from others
Six elements that make a difference
Compact format
Only thirty cards, no boards, no components to assemble. Everything fits in a small box. Setup: zero minutes. Perfect for quick evenings or travel.
Integrated free app
The Unlock! app is free, multilingual, and manages timers, confirmations, and penalties. It's not an optional addition: it's an integral part of the game. You can't play without the app.
Evocative historical setting
The Kamakura period is not just an exotic backdrop: the cards, puzzles, and narrative create a credible atmosphere. You don't need to know anything about Japanese history to immerse yourself.
Puzzles hidden in the illustrations
Numbers are not just printed: they are hidden in the drawings. A symbol on a lantern, a sequence of objects, an architectural detail. You need to observe, not just read.
Pure cooperation
No assigned roles, no predefined leader. Everyone sees everything, everyone proposes solutions, everyone makes mistakes together. Communication is your only weapon against the timer.
Calibrated difficulty
Difficulty 2 out of 3 according to Space Cowboys: challenging enough to make you think, accessible enough not to get stuck forever. The app offers three levels of hints if you get lost.
How it ends
How to win and how to lose
Only one win condition, only one lose condition. It all depends on the timer.
Victory
- Solve all the puzzles and enter the final code into the app before the timer runs out
- The app reveals the epilogue of the story and calculates your final score based on the time taken
- If you completed it without penalties and in less than 35 minutes, you achieved an excellent time
Defeat
- The timer reaches zero before you have solved the adventure
- You accumulate too many penalties for wrong combinations or incorrect codes, consuming all available time
- In any case, the app reveals how the story would have ended, even if you lost
It's an escape room that fits in your pocket. Nothing to dismantle, nothing to put away, just thirty cards and a story to solve. Once finished, pass the box to someone else.
Frequently asked questions
FAQ about Unlock! - Short Adventures - The Path of the Katana
Is the Unlock! app really free?
Yes, completely free and available on iOS and Android. It can be downloaded from official stores, requires no registration or in-app purchases. The game is unplayable without the app, so download it before opening the box.
Can I replay the adventure after solving it?
No, replayability is virtually zero. Once you know the puzzles and solutions, the experience is over. It's designed to be played once by your group, then you can pass it on to friends or keep the box as a memento. Consider each Short Adventure a ticket for a one-time experience.
How difficult is it compared to classic Unlock! games?
Difficulty 2 out of 3 declared by Space Cowboys. More accessible than expert Unlock! games but not trivial. If you've never played paper escape rooms, still expect moments where you'll get stuck for five to ten minutes. The app offers three levels of progressive hints if you truly can't make it.
Is it good for solo play or does it require a group?
It works perfectly well solo: all the mechanics remain identical, the only difference is that you don't have anyone to discuss your reasoning with. In a group (3-4 people ideally) it's more fun because everyone notices different details and solving becomes a continuous conversation. With six people, there's a risk of getting in each other's way.
Is it available in English?
Yes, this edition is entirely in Italian: cards, puzzles, app (the Unlock! app supports multiple languages, you can choose Italian from the menu). No need to know English.
