A run in five moments
What happens at the table
Not the rules. The descent.
You resurrect in the prison
Choose your Beheaded and their deck, set up the first biome, and step onto the island. No one knows what lies beyond the next tile. The Malaise has infected everything — and you've just come back to life.
The first fight is a puzzle
Enemies reveal their intentions: you see exactly what they'll do this round. Do you hit the Grenadier who explodes on turn three first, or take down the Shieldbearer while they're exposed? Every card played matters.
The first death
A flying abomination takes you by surprise and the run ends in an instant. You lose almost all the hard-earned loot. Frustrating? For a second. Then you look at the Cells you have left.
The mutation that changes everything
From the Collector, you spend Cells and unlock a permanent upgrade. The next run starts differently, stronger, with new cards in play. This is when you understand why you can't stop.
One step closer to the King
Run after run, you reach where you previously died. New biomes, new enemies, new weapons. At the end, the Hand of the King awaits you. And when you lose again, the usual phrase starts: "come on, just one more run."
How to play
The cycle of each run
Four phases that repeat every game. The great thing is that each death doesn't reset progress: it transforms it.
Carefully choose your path on the ever-changing island: randomly drawn tiles, chests, scrolls, and hidden runes that open new paths.
Face the hordes with your Beheaded's deck. See enemy moves and plan: attacks, abilities, and equipment, in the right order.
In such a hostile environment, death is part of the game. You lose most of what you collected in the run — but not the Cells.
Spend Cells at the Collector for permanent mutations. The next run starts stronger: this is how you always get a little further.
Why it works on the tabletop
Six things that make Dead Cells unique
Death is progression
The rogue-lite loop is intact: each defeat leaves you Cells to convert into permanent mutations. You never return empty-handed.
Combat is a puzzle
Enemies reveal their moves: no blind chaos, but tense, calculated choices about which threat to eliminate first.
Endless unlocks
The box is full of locked cards that are revealed as you play, with one of the most beloved progression systems in the genre. Surprises for months.
Faithful to the video game
Made with Motion Twin: enemies, biomes, and atmospheres recognizable at first glance. Fan service in the highest sense of the term.
Substantial solo play
In solo mode, Serenade, the animated sword, accompanies you. Not a compromise: a well-designed and complete mode, just like multiplayer.
No two runs are alike
Modular biomes, randomized loot, and different mutations make every game a new story. Replayability is its forte.
How it ends
Challenge the Hand of the King. Or die trying.
It's cooperative: you win or lose together, against the island. The ultimate goal is very far off at the beginning — but every run brings you closer, even when it ends in death.
Victory
- Cross the biomes to the High Peak Castle
- Defeat the Hand of the King, the island's final boss
- Then unlock Boss Cells and face higher difficulty levels
Death is not the end
- When you fall, the run ends and you lose most of your loot
- But you keep the Cells and permanent mutations you've already unlocked
- Start stronger: every death is a step forward
Dead Cells is one of the most discussed and awarded cooperative games of 2024: a ruthless and faithful adaptation that turns "die and try again" into a tabletop addiction.
Frequently Asked Questions
FAQ about Dead Cells: The Rogue-Lite Board Game
Is this just another poorly made video game adaptation?
That's a fair first question, because successful adaptations are rare. However, here we have a quartet of top-tier designers (Bauza, Lebrat, Maublanc, Rivière) and direct collaboration with Motion Twin. The result has been very well received abroad — Meeple Mountain included it among the best of the year. It doesn't reproduce the video game at all costs: it captures its spirit by redesigning it for the tabletop.
Doesn't constantly starting over get tiring?
That depends on you, and it's fair to say so. The "die and restart" loop is the heart of the rogue-lite: those who love it find it hypnotic, while those who can't stand resets might find it repetitive — some more critical reviewers have pointed this out. The difference is made by the permanent unlocks: every run changes something, so returning to the prison is never truly identical to before.
Do I need to have played the video game?
No. The board game stands on its own and can be learned without knowing the original. However, if you loved the video game, you'll find familiar enemies, biomes, and atmospheres — and the nostalgia effect is significant.
Does it really work in solo mode?
Yes, and it's one of its strong points. The solo mode is specifically designed, with the animated sword Serenade accompanying you. Many primarily play it solo without feeling penalized compared to multiplayer.
How many players and how long does a game last?
1 to 4 players, with a run typically lasting around 45 minutes. The total duration of an evening depends on how many runs you chain together — and it's usually more than one.
What language is this edition in?
This is the Italian edition, distributed in Italy by Asmodee. Cards, rulebook, and materials are in Italian.
