The FroGames Sheet
You roll the dice. You add the hedgehogs. Someone builds a masterpiece worth half the game. Someone else discovers that earrings change everything. And in the end, you realize you should never have left that nest unattended.
WHAT IT'S ABOUT
Three modules, endless combinations for your mine
Mastercrafts and Other Fineries brings three separate modules for River Valley Jewelcraft: Extra Explorers adds new characters, including Hedgehogs; Earrings introduces a new type of jewel; Masterpieces gives each player a powerful private jewel card to craft. Designed by John Brieger, Bryan Lue (Duckie), and Velgus at Allplay's request, with signature art by Andrew Bosley, the expansion stems from the development work on the base game.
Hedgehogs are cunning brothers represented by multiple worker meeples that spread across the board and gather at their Nest for big bonuses. Earrings offer scoring variety and new strategies, while masterpieces completely change your priorities: they are important, private cards that overturn the game plan. Choose one, two, or all three modules: each combination creates a different game.
What they say abroad
"New gems have been discovered."
— Allplay
The expansion comes from systems added in development: two new types of jewels and four asymmetric workers with some of the wildest powers yet.

River Valley Jewelcraft: Mastercrafts and Other Fineries
The base game supports official solo play, the expansion adds compatible modules. The experience is good for optimizing one's crafting engine, but it loses the competition over shared jewel cards that creates tension in multiplayer.
The three modules
What you'll find in the box
Extra Explorers
New characters including Hedgehogs, cunning brothers with multiple worker meeples that spread across the board and gather at the Nest for big bonuses. The most distinctive module: it changes the pace of the game.
Earrings
A new type of jewel to craft, adding scoring variety and new strategic paths. It doesn't revolutionize the base game but offers extra options for those seeking more scoring avenues.
Masterpieces
Each player receives a powerful private jewel card to craft. These are important cards that completely change your strategies. Secret objectives that force long-term planning.
Mix & Match
The three modules are independent: play with just one, with two, or with all three. Calibrate the complexity and variety on your table, without constraints.

How to Play
The Flow with Active Modules
The expansion does not change the turn structure of the base game, but adds new options and powers at each stage.
As in the base game: you activate a row or column of your mine grid. With the new characters from Extra Explorers, the collection powers change drastically.
If you play with hedgehogs, you have multiple meeples to manage. Each meeple moves according to unique character rules. Plan which positions you need to maximize bonuses.
Use gems to craft. With Earrings active, you have an extra type. With Masterpieces, you have a powerful private card to complete. Choose what to craft based on the module's strategy.
Place tiles to improve future collections. With masterpieces in play, each tile is a step towards the private objective or a wasted turn.

A game in five moments
What happens at the table with active modules
Not the rules. The experience.
Modular Setup
Before starting, choose which modules to use. Someone wants the hedgehogs, someone else focuses on masterpieces. If it's your first time with the expansion, start with only one module to understand how it changes the base game.
Hedgehogs Spread Out
With Extra Explorers in play, hedgehogs place meeples all over the board. They don't have just one worker: they have several, and the position of each matters. Other characters must rethink their space control.
The Masterpiece Calls
Mid-game, you realize your Masterpiece card requires specific gems you're not collecting. You change priorities. Those who crafted earrings in the meantime have already scored points you won't see. Private strategies diverge.
Meeting at the Nest
Hedgehogs gather at their Nest for big bonuses. It's the strongest moment of the game with that module: perfect timing or wasted meeples. Other players see the score soar and re-evaluate their moves.
Variable Final Count
The final score changes based on the active modules. Earrings added a scoring category, masterpieces are worth a huge chunk, hedgehogs capitalized on Nest bonuses. The one who planned best wins, but each game counts different things.
🐸Good to Know FirstThree honest things, from friends▼
Good to know beforehand
Three things to understand
Base game required
River Valley Jewelcraft is a standalone game, but this is an expansion: you can't play without the base game. If you don't own Jewelcraft yet, this box alone is not enough. Please check if you have or order the main game.
Variable complexity
The three modules are independent, but using them all together increases perceived complexity. If the table is playing for the first time, add one module at a time. Masterpieces is the most challenging (long-term private goals), Earrings the simplest.
Balance to discover
The game has very few ratings on BGG (just released). We don't yet know if the three modules together create dominant combos or if one of the new characters breaks the balance. Expect possible adjustments in the first few games.
🏆Victory and DefeatWhat the ending rewards▼
How it ends
How to win
The final score depends on the active modules: gems, crafted jewels, and specific bonuses from each module.
Victory
- Craft the most valuable jewels with the modules in play (private masterpieces, earrings, base cards)
- If using Extra Explorers, exploit your character's unique bonuses at the right time (e.g., hedgehog nest gathering)
- Plan gem collection according to your private masterpiece, if Masterpieces is active
Common mistakes
- Ignoring the private masterpiece and crafting generic cards: you lose half of your potential score
- With hedgehogs, failing to gather meeples at the Nest in time: you waste the character's strongest power
- Adding too many modules to the first game: confusion and analysis paralysis
Mastercrafts and Other Fineries is for those who have already played River Valley Jewelcraft and want more variety without disrupting the rules. Available on FroGames.it.

Frequently Asked Questions
FAQ about River Valley Jewelcraft: Mastercrafts and Other Fineries
Is the base game required to play?
Yes, it is mandatory. This is an expansion for River Valley Jewelcraft, not a standalone game. You cannot play without the base game.
Can I use only one module or do I have to activate them all?
The three modules are mix-and-match: you freely choose which ones to use. You can play with Extra Explorers alone, or with Earrings + Masterpieces, or with all three together. No restrictions.
Which module is the easiest to add?
Earrings: it only adds a new type of jewel to craft, no complex rule changes. Masterpieces is the most strategic (private objectives), Extra Explorers the most transformative (new characters with asymmetric powers).
How exactly do the Hedgehogs work?
Hedgehogs are cunning siblings with multiple meeples that spread across the board and gather at the Nest for big bonuses. Unlike other characters (one meeple), you control several at once: more positions, more options, but timing is key for the Nest.
What are Masterpieces?
Each player receives a powerful private jewel card to craft. These are important cards that completely change strategies. Long-term secret objectives that are worth many points but require specific gems.
Does the expansion work well solo?
Yes, the base game supports official solo play and the modules are compatible. Private masterpieces work very well (pure optimization), hedgehogs less so (they lose competitive interaction over positions). Earrings is neutral.
Does it significantly increase game duration?
With just one module, +5-10 minutes for setup and a few minutes of gameplay for extra decisions. With all three active, expect +15-20 minutes total on the base duration of 60 minutes, especially for the first game.
What components are in the box?
6 worker meeples, 4 character boards, 12 Earring jewel cards, 6 Masterpiece jewel cards, 16 scrap cubes, 1 Nest token, 2 Sun tokens, 4 Flipper tokens, 3 worker bonus tokens, 3 super rock tokens. All in cardboard/wood according to Allplay standard.
Are the new characters balanced?
There are not enough reviewed games to say for sure (the game has just been released). In the first sessions, test the characters and evaluate if anyone dominates: in that case, balance with informal drafts or bans.
What mechanics does River Valley Jewelcraft use?
The base game uses dice drafting, pattern building, set collection, tile placement, engine building. The expansion adds variable asymmetric powers (Extra Explorers) and private objectives (Masterpieces). No truly new mechanics, just more variety.
Is it available in Italian? Do I need to know English?
The edition for sale is in English. The base game has low language dependence (few words, mainly icons), but character and masterpiece cards have text. Basic English is needed to read the powers, or a translated reference.
