An abstract game where timing matters more than position
Corné van Moorsel (author of games like Lost Cities: Roll & Write) brings an unusual system to Allplay: turn order is not fixed, you control it. The illustrations by Anca Gavril and Daniel Profiri dress the pure mechanics with a colony of hungry penguins, but underneath is concentrated abstract strategy.
You place penguins on a hexagonal grid that grows each turn. You form flocks (connected groups) to claim fish tokens and score points. But the real choice is: do you play now or sacrifice this turn to play earlier next round? The marble marking your order moves across two columns, and whoever is lower goes first. Every move changes the future sequence.

Four elements, an elegant system
Wooden Penguins
Each player has their own colored set. You place them one by one on the free hexagons, building connected flocks to claim points.
Water Hex Tiles
The map grows: each turn a new tile is added next to the lowest numbered one. You must always place your penguin adjacent to it.
Fish Tiles
Points to claim. When you form or enlarge a flock, you take the largest available fish. But beware: whoever has more penguins in the same flock can steal it from you.
Turn Order Track
Two columns with colored marbles. After each action, choose which column to put your marble in: the inactive one will make you play earlier in the next round.

How to play
The flow of each round
Two possible actions, one decisive choice.
The player with the lowest marble on the ACTIVE column starts. Others follow from bottom to top. The order changes each round.
Place a penguin: put it on an empty hexagon adjacent to the water tile with the lowest number. Or voluntarily skip your turn to go earlier than others later.
If you have formed or expanded a rookery (a connected group of your penguins), take the largest available fish. If someone else had the majority in that rookery, you steal it from them.
Take your marble and place it on top of ONE of the two columns on the turn order track. If you place it on the inactive column, you will play earlier next round. The columns switch roles each round.

What happens at the table
Not the rules. The experience.
First hexes, first doubts
The map is small, you have space. You place a penguin, take a marble, put it on a column. It seems easy. Then the second player voluntarily skips their turn to go earlier later, and you realize you've already made a mistake.
Rookeries begin to form
Now there are 4-5 water tiles, and the penguins are starting to touch. You form your first connected rookery, claiming a 3-point fish. But someone places next to you and steals your majority: now the fish is theirs. Do you want to get it back? You have to place there again, but you lose initiative.
The turn order track becomes everything
Mid-game. The map is crowded, key positions are obvious. The player who goes first takes the big fish. You sacrifice an entire turn to climb the column: you play after everyone now, but you'll be first next round. A risky bet.
Someone sees the winning move
A player connects two separate rookeries with a single penguin: a unique rookery of 8 pieces, a 5-point fish, a huge advantage. Everyone realizes it had been there for two turns, no one had seen it. Now it's about damage control.
Last hexes, final counts
The map is complete, there are no more water tiles. You place the last penguins only to steal majorities or prevent connections. You count the fish, you count the rookeries, and whoever controlled the turn order in the key moments wins by 2-3 points.

Three things you need to consider
Turn order is counter-intuitive
You don't immediately understand why you should skip a turn. It takes a whole game to see how it works: giving way now to go earlier later is the key move, but it needs to be understood over time. New players often ignore it and lose.
Those who see ahead win
Zero luck means tactical skill is everything. If there's one person at the table who's been playing abstract games for years and three who are trying it for the first time, the gap is huge. It's not a problem if you're all at the same level, but watch out for mixed tables.
With 5 players, it slows down
With 2-3 players, it's very fast, a solid 20 minutes. With 5, downtime increases because everyone has to read the map AND the turn order track before deciding. Count on 30-35 minutes and some players getting distracted between turns.

- Sum the values of all fish you claimed during the game
- Count how many rookeries (connected groups) of your penguins are on the final map
- The player with the most total points (fish + rookeries) wins
Ways to lose points
- Having a big fish stolen because someone overtakes you in majority in the rookery
- Placing isolated penguins that do not form connected rookeries
- Losing initiative in critical turns and leaving key positions to others
Waddle is pure strategy in 20 minutes, where the real battleground is the turn order track. Whoever controls it, controls the map.

Is turn order really that important?
Yes, it is THE heart of the game. Going first allows you to take the best positions, but you have to sacrifice the previous turn. Wrong timing = lost game. It's not a tactical detail, it's the main decision of every move.
Does it play well with two players?
Very well, in fact, it's perhaps the ideal number. With two, every move counts double, and control of the turn order becomes a fierce duel. Zero downtime, lightning-fast games. If you're looking for a quick and tactical abstract game for two, Waddle is very solid.
Is it suitable for those who never play abstract games?
It depends. The penguin theme helps, and the rules are immediate. But the tactical depth is high: after three games, you start to see moves you didn't see before. If you usually play party games or pure co-ops, it might be too cerebral. If you like Azul or Kingdomino, it will be perfect.
Is it available in Italian?
This edition is in English, but the game is completely language-independent: no text on components or cards. You only need to read the rulebook once (available online), then you can play without language issues.

A march of penguins. In Waddle, you find yourself among ice and fish, where the secret to victory isn't just placing your penguins well, but doing so at the right time. Each turn is a dance of strategy and timing: move, block, anticipate.
The rhythm of ice. The heart of the game is the Turn Tracker, a double column of marbles that decides who plays and when. Drawing early or a moment late can make all the difference between a starving colony and one swimming in abundance.
Two choices, a thousand outcomes. Each turn, you can place a penguin on an empty hex next to the nearest body of water, pushing your march toward new groups and new points. Or you can "Scout Ahead," climbing the opposite column to secure a future turn early.
Blocks and connections. Creating a large group (a true "waddle") guarantees you succulent fish, but also a positioning that can cut off an opponent. Each penguin you put down is both a step forward for you and a hindrance for them.

We didn't have any extra miniatures, so we placed two plush penguins next to the board. The atmosphere was set. Waddle impressed us with how vicious he can be in just a few minutes : just one well-placed penguin can shut down an entire strategy.
The most fun thing is the variable turn order: you choose to act immediately or wait, and if you get your timing wrong... they'll eat you. It's fast, elegant, and always leaves you wanting to replay it to do better.
