A game in five moments
What happens at the table
Not the rules. The tension.
The sky is already full
You've chosen your city, built the skies, positioned the mothership at the top. Five dice in your palm, the bunker ready beneath your feet. She's up there, motionless. For now.
The die that betrays you
You need a 6 to advance research. But that 6 also makes the alien ship plummet six spaces, straight towards your city. Take it or leave it? You decide — there's no one else to blame.
A ship breaks through
You couldn't shoot it down in time. It hits the city, the bunker takes damage. You have few shields and the invasion has just begun. Your breath shortens.
The re-roll of desperation
You place the white die knowing it will re-roll all the others. One roll stands between salvation and disaster. You hold your breath, scan the board, and let the dice go.
The last research
The marker touches the top of the track as the mothership is one step away from the skull. You made it by a hair's breadth. You reset everything and are already thinking about increasing the difficulty.
How to play
The flow of each round
Four quick, repeating steps. You learn it in fifteen minutes, you master it much slower.
Each round you roll five dice: three gray and two white. It's up to you to decide the fate of the besieged city.
Place one die per column in the bunker rooms. High number = powerful effect, but ships in that column descend by that many spaces.
You produce energy, advance research, fire fighters, block routes with anti-aircraft guns. Meanwhile, the aliens descend towards you.
At the end of the round, the mothership descends one level. The closer it gets to the skull at the bottom of the sky, the closer you are to defeat.
Why it's different from other solo games
Six ideas that make a difference
The dice dilemma
The number you need is also the one that dooms you: a high die gives you more, but brings the aliens closer at the same speed. Every placement is a painful choice.
Unrelenting tension
The mothership descends every round, no exceptions. There is no breathing room: the pressure builds from the first die to the last.
The board is the theme
The board develops vertically: the sky above, the city below. You literally see the invasion plummeting towards you, space by space.
Customizable difficulty
Flip the sky tiles to raise the challenge one notch at a time. From the first approach to an extreme brain-burner, you decide how much to suffer.
A campaign that fills the box
Four chapters, about ten games, cities with unique powers and characters with special abilities. More than half of the box is dedicated to the campaign.
The double-edged re-roll
Placing a white die causes all others to be re-rolled. It can save you from a bad roll or turn it into a catastrophe. Both weapon and trap in the same action.
How it ends
One way to win, two to fall
Science is your only salvation, but time is against you on two fronts. Every game is a race against the clock and against the sky.
Victory
- Move the research marker to the top of the track
- Hold out until your science finds the decisive weapon
- In the campaign, each saved city unlocks the next
Defeat
- The mothership reaches the skull at the bottom of the sky
- Your city takes more damage than it can withstand
- No automa, no opponents: just you against the inevitable
Under Falling Skies is one of the most beloved and awarded solo games in recent years. Quick to set up, incredibly difficult to put down.
Frequently Asked Questions
FAQ about Under Falling Skies
Can a solo game really keep you hooked?
Yes, and that's precisely its strength. Under Falling Skies was born as a solo game: no automa to manage, no fake artificial intelligence. The tension is created by the system itself — the descending mothership and the dice that always present you with a compromise. It's one of the most played solo games in the world for a reason.
Doesn't it get repetitive after a few plays?
That's the most honest criticism it can receive. A single game lasts 20–40 minutes and the arc is similar. But modular tiles, cities with different powers, adjustable difficulty, and a four-chapter campaign change the game every time. Those looking for a puzzle to replay in short sessions love it; those who want a constantly new story might tire of it sooner.
How difficult is it to learn?
Not very. The rulebook is structured like a tutorial: it guides you through the first game in its simplest form and only adds elements later. You'll be operational in about 15 minutes. The depth comes from the decisions, not the volume of rules.
Is there a real campaign or just single games?
Both. You can play single missions when you have twenty minutes, or tackle the campaign: four chapters, about ten linked games, with scenarios, cities, and characters unlocking along the way. More than half of the box content is dedicated to the campaign.
Can I adjust the difficulty?
Yes, very precisely. You flip one or more sky tiles to their more menacing side to increase the challenge one notch at a time. And if you lose, you can replay the "damaged" city with a stronger power. It suits both beginners and those looking for a brain-burner.
Is it available in Italian?
This is the English edition from Czech Games Edition. The game is primarily icon and symbol-driven, but the rulebook, scenarios, and campaign texts are in English. If English doesn't deter you, it's perfect as is.
Under Falling Skies is a solo science fiction board game for 1 player (ages 12+, duration 20–40 min). Designed by Tomáš Uhlíř with illustrations by Petr Boháček and Kwanchai Moriya, published by Czech Games Edition. Main mechanic: dice placement on a modular vertical board, where the value of each die determines both the power of the action and the descent speed of the alien ships. Defend a besieged city from your underground bunker by managing energy, research, fighters, and anti-aircraft defenses, while the mothership relentlessly descends each round. Reimplementation of the Print & Play game winner of the 9-Card Nanogame Contest 2019, with a four-chapter campaign, multiple cities, and adjustable difficulty. English edition. Available on FroGames.it.

🐸 HOW TO PLAY
1 Each turn you roll dice and assign them to rooms in your underground base to gather resources, build robots, or develop research.
2 The value of the die determines the power of the action but also the speed with which the enemy spaceships descend towards your base.
3 You can take down spaceships by placing dice in defense rooms or creating robots that enhance future actions.
4 You have to balance the risk between landing ships too quickly and getting more effective actions.
5 You win if you can complete the research track before your base is destroyed or the mothership reaches the surface!
