Pairs well with
The FroGames Card
You receive a secret clue. You look at the characters on the table. You choose a Scent card, and cover it. The others do the same, in silence. You all turn them over together. If even just one other person thought like you, you're on the right track. Otherwise, someone followed the wrong lead, and now you look at each other wondering: did I really think that alone?
WHAT IT'S ABOUT
The Final Exam at the School for Sniffers
Toby is a cooperative deduction game designed by Luca Rosa and David Spada for GateOnGames, an Italian publisher known for the investigative series The Wall. The game is part of the publisher's Fluffy Animals line, set in a canine school where players are students ready for their final exam: matching scents to characters. The theme is lighthearted, but the challenge is real.
Each player receives a secret clue and must associate it with one of the characters in play by choosing a Scent card, without being able to communicate with others. The score only rewards shared insights: if at least one other player made the same choice, you're on the right track. If you're the only one, you probably made the wrong deduction. The group wins or loses together, and every mistake counts.
What they say abroad
"In Toby, you’ll step into the paws of a student at the School for Sniffers, ready to take the final exam."
— GateOnGames
Toby presents itself as a lighthearted but not trivial party game: the forbidden communication creates a silent tension, and when everyone turns over their cards together, the table erupts in shouts or awkward silences. We'll see if it lives up to its promise.

The sniffer's tools
Secret clues
Each round you receive a clue that only you see. It can be a concept, an emotion, a visual detail. You must translate it into a Scent card without saying anything.
Scent cards
The cards you associate with the characters. Each player chooses one to match their clue to the correct character. The challenge is to choose the one that others will also choose.
Characters
The subjects of the exam: dogs and other animals from the School for Sniffers. Each has visual and conceptual characteristics that you must interpret in the same way.
Scoring system
Only shared choices count: if at least one other person chose like you, you gain points. If you're the only one, nothing. Make too many mistakes and the exam is failed.

How to play
The flow of each round
Toby plays in quick rounds: clue, choice, reveal, score. Repeat until you run out of cards or reach the target score.
Each player draws a clue that only they can see. The clue indicates a concept to associate with one of the characters in play.
Silently, everyone chooses the Scent card they associate with their clue and places it face down in front of them. No talking, gesturing, or giving hints.
Everyone turns over their cards together. Compare choices: each shared match (at least two players with the same card) scores points. Solo choices do not count.
Update the group score. If you've reached the goal, you win. Otherwise, draw new clues and start over. Too many mistakes = failed exam.

What happens at the table
Not the rules. The experience.
Secret clues
Draw clues. Everyone reads their own, in silence. Look at the characters on the table. Someone nods, someone bites their lip. No one can say anything, but brains start working.
Silent choice
Everyone chooses a Scent card and covers it. Someone is sure, someone hesitates. You'd like to ask for confirmation, but you can't. You choose and hope others thought like you.
The reveal
Turn over the cards together. Did someone choose like you? The table erupts: shouts of joy or awkward silences. Those who chose alone wonder what others saw that they didn't.
Count the points
Each shared choice scores points. Each solo choice does not. The score goes up or stays still. You realize where you went wrong, but it's too late. The next round will be different.
Final exam
Last hand. If you have enough points, you pass the exam. Otherwise, you fail. Someone laughs, someone despairs. Everyone wants to play again immediately to see if they succeed next time.

What to know beforehand
Three things to consider
Zero communication
You cannot talk, gesture, or give clues during the choice. If your group loves to discuss and plan, this game takes that option away. It only works if you accept silence as part of the challenge.
Subjective interpretation
Clues can be ambiguous: an image, a concept, a word. Everyone interprets them in their own way. If there's someone in the group who thinks very differently from others, prepare for solo choices and frustration.
Group scalability
The game works for 3-6 players, but the difficulty changes a lot: it's easier to converge with 3, and chaotic with 6. More players = more divergence, and the balance might not hold up with every count.
🏆Victory and defeatWhat the ending rewards▼
How it ends
How to win and how to lose
Toby uses a threshold-based cooperative scoring system. Reach the shared point target before running out of cards, or fail the exam.
Victory
- Reach the target score before the clue cards run out
- Correctly match enough scents to characters in a shared way
- Prove that the group thinks in sync and passes the exam at the School for Sniffers
Defeat
- Run out of clue cards without reaching the required score
- Too many players make solo choices that don't score points
- The group fails to converge on associations and fails the exam
Toby promises that kind of silent tension that makes cooperative party games memorable: that feeling of understanding each other without words, or discovering that you don't understand each other at all.

FAQ about Toby
Is Toby suitable for those who have never played modern board games?
Yes, the rules are immediate: you draw a clue, choose a card, turn them over together. No experience needed. The suggested age is 8+, so it also works for families with children who can read and make conceptual associations.
What mechanics does Toby use?
Toby combines cooperative deduction, communication limits (you cannot talk), simultaneous voting (you choose covered cards and turn them over together), and score-and-reset (round after round you accumulate points or fail). It's a mix between Hanabi and The Mind, with a thematic twist on matching.
How long does a game last?
20 minutes stated. It's a quick filler, ideal for filling the evening or as a warm-up. We don't yet know if the pace holds up or if some configurations slow down, but the short round structure promises well.
Does it work well with 3 players or do you need a full group?
The range is 3-6. In theory it works at all counts, but cooperative deduction and convergence of thought are easier with fewer players (3-4) and more chaotic with more (5-6). Scalability is yet to be tested in practice.
Is it available in Italian?
Yes, the edition sold on FroGames is in Italian, published by GateOnGames. Rulebook, cards, and components are localized.
