The FroGames Card
You place your pawn on the wheel, activate the action, and discover that a rival has blocked the map space you needed. You rethink everything. You change your plan. The production chain reorganizes, and the next turn will be different.
WHAT IT IS ABOUT
Building an oil empire, one turn at a time
Oil Rock is a game by Marco Piola Caselli for Cranio Creations, with illustrations by Giovanni Calore and Klemens Franz. The game puts you in charge of an expanding oil company, striving to dominate the market through optimized refining chain management.
At the table, you take control of an action wheel that dictates your turns: every choice matters, because positioning yourself early or late radically changes the opportunities. Expand your influence on the hexagonal map, build oil rigs, develop more efficient turbines, upgrade refineries. Every action translates into concrete advantages that accumulate turn after turn.
What they say abroad
"Players lead an expanding oil company, called to dominate the market through refining chain management."
— Cranio Creations
Oil Rock is a first look for us. Presented at the Cranio Gaming Event 2026, it promises timing, optimization, and interconnected choices. We will follow its debut and update this card with the first games.

Game elements
What you find in the box
Action Wheel
The core of the game: you place your pawn, activate the corresponding action. The sequence matters, because each turn the wheel advances and changes priorities.
Hexagonal map
Hexagons representing key market areas. Expand influence by placing tokens, gain exclusive advantages, block opponents from the most profitable zones.
Oil rigs and refineries
Build oil rigs to extract, upgrade refineries to increase production efficiency. Every upgrade translates into more output in subsequent turns.
Turbines and asymmetric powers
Develop turbines to unlock more powerful actions. The variable powers of the initial setup guide you towards different strategies each game.
🎲How to PlayThe rules in four steps▼
How to Play
The flow of each round
Oil Rock is played in turns, dictated by the rotation of the action wheel. Each player places, activates, builds, optimizes.
Choose where to place your pawn on the action wheel. The position determines which action you will activate and when, in subsequent turns.
Perform the action corresponding to your position: expand on the map, build oil rigs, develop turbines, upgrade refineries. Each action has ripple effects.
Oil rigs extract, refineries convert, turbines boost. Manage the production chain to maximize output in subsequent turns.
Build your company's reputation to unlock advanced abilities. The wheel advances, turns pass, and the game approaches the final tally.

A game in five moments
What happens at the table
Not the rules. The experience.
Setup and first wheel turn
You choose asymmetric power, observe the map, decide where to expand first. The wheel turns, and the first placement is already a statement of intent. Others immediately understand which area you want to control.
Expansion and first blockades
Someone places a marker on a hex you had your eye on. You change your plan, expand elsewhere, start building oil rigs in less obvious areas. The production chain takes shape, but is still fragile.
Chain optimization
You have three oil rigs, an upgraded refinery, and a turbine that allows you extra actions. Others are fine-tuning their chains. Every turn is a race for the best timing: act too early and you waste resources, too late and you're cut off.
Conflict over key areas
The map fills up. A rival blocks the area you needed to close a combo. You rethink the entire wheel sequence, change priorities, focus on another sector. Tension rises, margins shrink.
Final round and scoring
The last placement on the wheel. Have you built enough? Has the production chain yielded as much as you hoped? Points are counted, and you discover that that oil rig built on turn 4 made all the difference. Or it didn't.

Learning curve present
Rondel and worker placement are known mechanics, but their intertwining requires one game to understand the optimal timing. The first session is exploratory; from the second, choices become more precise.
Variable setup changes the approach
Asymmetric powers and a modular map mean that each game has a different balance. A winning strategy can fail in the next setup if you don't adapt.
Scaling at 2 and 4 different
With 2 players, the map is less congested, key areas are contested less. With 4, spatial competition becomes central and mutual blocking changes the dynamics.
🏆Victory and defeatWhat the ending rewards▼
How it ends
How to win and how to lose
In Oil Rock, the player who has built the most efficient and reputable company wins. You lose by falling behind in the production chain or by misjudging the timing of expansion.
Victory
- Accumulate more reputation points by optimizing oil rigs, refineries, and turbines
- Control key areas on the map and exploit exclusive advantages
- Build a production chain that yields more than others in the final turns
Defeat
- Misjudge the timing on the wheel and waste actions in inefficient sequences
- Get blocked out of strategic areas and miss expansion opportunities
- Underestimate reputation and arrive at the scoring with abilities not unlocked
Oil Rock is a pure optimization eurogame: if you're looking for efficiency, timing, and intertwined production chains, it's the right game. If you're looking for chaos and plot twists, look elsewhere.

Frequently Asked Questions
Oil Rock FAQ
What mechanics does Oil Rock use?
Oil Rock combines rondel (action wheel that dictates turns), worker placement (strategic placement on a hexagonal map), asymmetric powers, and variable setup. The production chain links oil rigs, refineries, and turbines in a competitive engine-building game.
Is it suitable for those new to eurogames?
No. Oil Rock is designed for players with experience in medium-heavy mechanics. If this is your first eurogame, start with gateway titles like Splendor or Carcassonne, then come back here when rondel and worker placement are familiar to you.
Does it play well with 2 players?
Yes, but the experience changes. With 2 players, the map is less competitive, key areas are contested less, and optimization matters more than mutual blocking. With 4, spatial conflict becomes central. Both experiences are valid, but different.
How long does a game actually last?
The first few games approach 2 hours, including setup, explanation, and slow decisions. From the second session onwards, with players familiar with the mechanics, 90 minutes is realistic. Add 15-20 minutes if someone at the table is new.
Is the edition for sale in Italian?
Yes. The edition distributed by Cranio Creations is in full Italian: rulebook, cards, components. Ready to play without translations.
