Pairs well with
The FroGames Card
You place a tile. Three ghosts appear. Someone suggests a graveyard but you need a meeple and you don't have one. The cursed castle would help, but it's on the other side of the map. You decide together. You fail together.
WHAT IT IS ABOUT
Carcassonne where ghosts chase you and you have to survive
Klaus-Jürgen Wrede takes his most famous tile-laying system and turns it on its head: in Mists over Carcassonne, you don't compete for points, you cooperate to survive. Tiles generate ghosts, ghosts haunt the land, and you must contain the threat using graveyards and cursed castles before the deck runs out. Graphics by Marcel Gröber and Anne Pätzke, compatible with the 2021 edition of Carcassonne.
Each turn you place a tile, place meeples to close elements or contain curses, then draw ghost cards that release specters onto the map. Too many free ghosts = defeat. Too few points at the end of the third day = defeat. Closing roads, cities, and monasteries gives you points and tools. Graveyards seal haunted lands, cursed castles give you extra turns. You have three days (three decks) to reach a minimum score and not be overwhelmed.
What they say abroad
"Mists over Carcassonne is a co-operative version of the well-known tile-laying game Carcassonne."
— Hans im Glück
A known system applied to a new challenge: containing chaos instead of maximizing points. Decisions change completely.

Nebbie Su Carcassonne (Mists over Carcassonne)
The game includes official solo rules that work identically to multiplayer: you play alone against the ghost deck, managing meeples and decisions. The experience is complete, but you obviously miss out on group discussion, which is half the fun of cooperative play. Excellent for training or when you don't have a table.
The tools you have
Tiles, meeples, ghosts, and curses
Territory tiles
60 tiles compatible with Carcassonne 2021. Place, complete roads and cities, build the map. Each completion gives points and frees meeples. Each tile can generate ghosts.
Ghosts
After each placement, you draw ghost cards that release 0-3 specters onto open elements (roads, cities, fields). Too many around = defeat. You must close or seal them.
Graveyards
Place a meeple on an infested land and turn it into a graveyard: this seals that land, preventing new ghosts there. High cost (you lose the meeple forever) but the only way to contain critical areas.
Cursed Castles
When you complete a city with a cursed crest, you get an immediate bonus turn. These are the moments when you catch up, but you have to plan to close them at the right time.

🎲How to playThe rules in four steps▼
How to play
The flow of each turn
Four quick steps, but the third one can ruin your game.
Draw and place a territory tile following the classic Carcassonne rules (compatible edges). Build roads, cities, monasteries.
You can place a meeple on the tile you just placed: on a road, city, monastery (to close them and score points) or on an infested land (to create a cemetery and seal it).
Draw a card from the ghost deck. It shows 0, 1, 2 or 3 skulls. Place that number of ghosts on OPEN elements of the map (roads, cities, incomplete fields). If there are no spaces, the ghosts are lost (good for you).
If your tile completes a road, city or monastery, count the points (as in Carcassonne), retrieve your meeples, remove any ghosts from that element. If you complete a city with a cursed coat of arms, you play a bonus turn.

A game in five moments
What happens at the table
Not the rules. The experience.
Setup and first tiles
Place the starting tile, distribute meeples, shuffle the three decks (three days). Place the first tiles, discussing positions. Still no ghosts: it looks like normal Carcassonne. You relax. That's a mistake.
The first ghosts appear
Someone draws a ghost card with three skulls. Three specters on the map. You realize that each tile can generate more. You start closing roads quickly to free meeples. The discussion gets more intense.
Mid-game crisis
Second day, ghosts everywhere. Someone suggests a cemetery but it means losing a meeple forever. Someone else suggests focusing everything on a cursed castle for extra turns. You choose. You hope you chose well.
The cursed castle as a lifesaver
You close the cursed city, take the bonus turn, place two crucial tiles, seal an infested field. For a moment you think you'll make it. Then someone draws three ghosts again.
End of the third day
Last tile. Count the points, count the free ghosts, check the victory threshold. Either you are above both, or the fog has claimed you. Someone immediately suggests another game at a higher difficulty.

Good to know beforehand
Three things that change the experience
Ghost drawing is brutal
You can draw zero ghosts for three turns, then three ghosts for two turns in a row. The variance is high and can mess up perfect plans. If you can't handle the frustration of pure bad luck, this game will make you curse. With 5 players, the chaos doubles.
The pace is slow with too many players
With 4-5 players, each turn is debated at length and downtime increases. The game works best with 2-3 players, where decisions remain quick and tension isn't diluted by committees. Solo, it's a clean puzzle.
Scalable difficulty changes everything
The manual includes difficulty variants (higher score thresholds, more starting ghosts). The first game is easy, but to unlock replay value you need to go higher. If you always play at base difficulty, you'll exhaust the game in 3-4 plays.
🏆Victory and defeatWhat the ending rewards▼
How it ends
How to win and how to lose
Finish the third day's deck and check two conditions. Both must be true.
Victory
- You have accumulated at least the minimum required score (varies with the chosen difficulty)
- You have at most the allowed number of free ghosts on the map (usually 12, but depends on difficulty)
- You have managed cemeteries and cursed castles to contain the fog without sacrificing too many points
Defeat
- You end the third day with too many free ghosts (above the threshold): the fog has invaded Carcassonne
- You end the third day below the minimum required score: you contained the ghosts but didn't build enough
- You can't place a ghost because all open elements are already fully infested (rare, but possible)
It's the Carcassonne you know applied to a challenge you've never faced before: surviving instead of winning. And when you increase the difficulty, surviving becomes tough.

FAQ about Mists Over Carcassonne
What mechanics does Mists Over Carcassonne use?
Cooperative tile placement (you place territory tiles and build the map), limited hand management (you manage shared meeple pools), controlled push-your-luck (draw ghost cards with random outcomes), and spatial containment system (cemeteries and castles). It's classic Carcassonne plus a cooperative survival layer.
Does it work well solo or do you need a group?
Solo, it's a clean tactical puzzle: you manage everything yourself, no piloting, optimizing resources against the ghost deck. It works very well. Multiplayer adds discussion and social pressure, but the solo experience is complete and often more tense (no one to blame).
Is it compatible with my base Carcassonne game?
The 60 tiles of Mists Over Carcassonne are compatible with the 2021 edition of Carcassonne (updated graphics). If you have the old edition (pre-2021), the graphic borders don't match perfectly. The manual also includes rules for incorporating ghosts into a classic competitive game, if you want to experiment.
How long does a game actually last?
The declared 35 minutes are realistic for 2 experienced players. With 3-4 players, it easily extends to 45-50 minutes because each turn is heavily discussed. With 5 players or beginners, it reaches an hour. If the group tends to cooperative analysis paralysis, consider that it doubles.
Is this edition in Italian?
Yes, the Giochi Uniti edition includes rules in Italian and components with minimal text (territory tiles are universal, ghost cards have symbols). Fully playable in Italian without the need for external translations.
