The FroGames Board
You place a cedar forest tile. Someone adds a discovery, someone else places snow. Now your perfect path goes through an impossible area. You rethink everything. This is Nakasendo.
WHAT IT'S ABOUT
A strategic journey between Tsumago and Magome in Edo period Japan
Nakasendo is a tile-placement game by Jorge Tabanera Redondo, a Spanish designer and illustrator who personally oversees every aspect of the project. The game draws inspiration from the historic Nakasendo route, which during the Edo period connected Edo (modern-day Tokyo) to Kyoto, crossing mountains, cedar forests, and ancient post towns. Published by the Italian publisher Little Rocket Games, Nakasendo brings the atmosphere of that legendary trail to the table, which is now a destination for tourist pilgrimages between Tsumago and Magome.
At the table, you build your personal path by placing path tiles, adding discoveries, and trying to create the most harmonious route possible. Seasonal events bring snow and bears to the path, forcing you to adapt your plans. Scoring conditions change during the game: every decision can influence the final outcome. At the end of the journey, the player who has traced the most rewarding path wins.

Elements of the journey
What you find on the path between Tsumago and Magome
Path tiles
Each tile represents a section of the path: cedar forests, mountains, post villages. You place the tiles to build the most harmonious and profitable route.
Discoveries
Elements you add to your path to earn points or unlock bonuses. Waterfalls, shrines, panoramas: each discovery enriches the journey.
Seasonal events
Snow and bears arrive on the path, changing scoring conditions. A perfect path can become impossible: you must adapt, always.
Intermediate objectives
Scoring conditions change during the game. What was valid in the first round might not count in the third: plan, but remain flexible.

How to play
The flow of each round
Each round of Nakasendo follows a precise structure: draft, placement, events. The tension lies in balancing planning and adaptation.
Players take turns choosing path tiles and discoveries from a common pool. Choices are visible to everyone: anticipate others' strategies and decide whether to follow your plan or block opponents.
Place the chosen tiles on your personal path, trying to create patterns that meet the current scoring conditions. Mountains, forests, villages: each tile must fit harmoniously.
An event is revealed: snow, bears, or something else. Events change the scoring conditions for subsequent rounds, forcing you to rethink your route. What was valid before might no longer be.
Points are awarded based on current conditions. Discoveries, completed patterns, objectives: each round rewards different strategies. At the end of the game, everything is tallied, and the winner is declared.

A game in five moments
What happens at the table
Not the rules. The experience.
The first tile
Everyone starts from Tsumago. You place your first path tile, maybe a cedar forest or a mountain. Someone laughs, someone is already studying the setup. The journey to Magome has just begun, but you already have an idea of where you want to go.
The first event
Snow arrives. Now some tiles are worth more, others less. Your perfect plan has a problem: it passes through an area that is now penalized. Someone changes strategy, someone bets everything on risk. Tension rises.
The crucial draft
Everyone looks at the available tiles. There's one you desperately need. But someone else wants it. The open draft reveals intentions: either you take what you need, or you block opponents. You can't do both.
The bear on the path
An event brings a bear to a key area. Someone rejoices (they had avoided that area), someone curses (they had built half their path there). Scoring conditions change again. Now flexibility matters, not pure planning.
The final count
Everyone reveals their completed paths. Someone built a very long route, someone a compact but efficient one. Discoveries, bonuses, penalties are counted. The winner is whoever was able to adapt to events without losing the big picture. Someone immediately asks: shall we play again?

Three things you need to know before buying Nakasendo
New game, zero reviews
Nakasendo will be released in 2026 and currently there are no verifiable reviews. Data on balance, replayability, and learning curve are yet to be tested in the field. If you buy now, you're among the first to try it: it can be an advantage or a risk.
Random events change everything
Seasonal events (snow, bears) change scoring conditions every round. If you love pure planning and hate surprises, Nakasendo will make you curse. If you like adapting to chaos, it's perfect.
Variable scoring: beware of downtime
Scoring conditions change during the game and require continuous recalculations. With 4 players, downtime could be prolonged: it's not a 30-minute filler if someone at the table suffers from analysis paralysis.
🏆Victory and defeatWhat the ending rewards▼
How it ends
How to win and how to lose
Nakasendo rewards those who can balance planning and adaptation. At the end of the journey, all points accumulated in intermediate rounds and from final bonuses are counted.
Victory
- You built the most harmonious path, respecting the variable scoring conditions round after round
- You leveraged discoveries to maximize bonuses without being penalized by seasonal events
- You read opponents' moves in the draft and blocked their strategies at key moments
Defeat
- You planned a perfect path, but seasonal events rendered it useless and you didn't adapt
- You ignored the draft: opponents took all the key tiles and you were left with scraps
- You built a long but inefficient path, without focusing on the scoring conditions that really mattered
Nakasendo brings the atmosphere of rural Edo period Japan to the table, with tile-placement mechanics that reward flexibility and reading opponents. A journey worth experiencing.

Frequently asked questions
FAQ about Nakasendo
Is Nakasendo suitable for beginner players?
Yes. The basic rules are accessible (you place tiles, choose discoveries, count points), but the variable scoring conditions require attention and adaptation. Perfect for a family game with players 10+ who want something more than a filler, but without the complexity of a heavy eurogame.
How long does a game really last?
The box says 30-45 minutes. Realistically, with 4 players in the first game expect 60 minutes. The open draft and scoring count take time. With 2 experienced players, 30 minutes is feasible.
Do random events ruin the strategy?
It depends on what you're looking for. If you want total control, Nakasendo is not for you. Seasonal events (snow, bears) change the scoring conditions, forcing you to rethink your plans. It's a feature, not a bug: the game rewards adaptation, not rigid planning.
Why should I buy a game with no reviews?
Honestly: you shouldn't, if you're looking for guarantees. Nakasendo will be released in 2026 and has no verifiable reviews. You buy it if you trust the work of Little Rocket Games and Jorge Tabanera Redondo, or if the theme (the Nakasendo route) fascinates you so much that you want to take the risk. We will update the page as soon as the first feedback arrives.
Is it available in Italian?
Yes. The edition sold on FroGames is in Italian, published by Little Rocket Games. Rulebook, tiles, and all materials are localized.
