The FroGames card
The hamster reports suspicious movements backstage. The cat slips under the stage. The dog sniffs something strange. Meanwhile, the parrot points to the trophy, and the tiny bug finds a hidden clue. No one knows who the thief is yet.
WHAT IT'S ABOUT
Two EXIT adventures for young detectives and curious families
Milo the cat, Häm the hamster, Bella the dog, Nele the parrot, and Luis the bug form a team of animal superheroes who have already solved several mysteries together. Designed by Inka Brand, Markus Brand, and Emely Brand for the EXIT: The Game – Family line, this title brings the most enduring boxed escape room system in modern board gaming to a younger audience, while maintaining creative puzzles and the license to manipulate materials.
In The Trophy Case, someone has planned a heist to steal the talent show trophy: the team must go undercover, stop the thief, and save the show. In Night at the Carnival, a conspiracy threatens to leave the fair in the dark forever. Two independent adventures, same decoder, same enigma-hint-answer card system that has made EXIT one of the world's best-selling series.

— Tabletop Game Icons
This is a first read of a newly released game. BGG data is still limited, but the promise is clear: EXIT Family brings the winning format of the Kennerspiel des Jahres 2017 into stories designed for 8+, with more accessible but always surprising puzzles. We will update the card with community feedback.

What's in the box
The components of two EXIT adventures
Decoder Disk
The decoder disk that confirms or disproves your hunches. The mechanical heart of every EXIT: enter symbols, check if the solution holds.
Enigma/Hint/Answer Cards
<cite index="13-6,13-7">Three decks: Enigma cards with puzzles to solve, Hint cards for when you get stuck, Answer cards to verify</cite>. Layered system that allows freedom or assistance.
Introductory Booklet
The basic rules, the setting of the two stories, and visual clues scattered throughout the pages. It often needs careful examination: it might contain more than it seems.
Manipulable Materials
<cite index="13-5,13-12">You might need to alter or destroy some components to solve the puzzles</cite>. It's the EXIT signature: folding, cutting, overlaying. The game becomes an artifact.
🎲How to playThe rules in four steps▼
How to play
The flow of each EXIT puzzle
Each puzzle follows the same structure: observe, deduce, verify with the decoder.
A puzzle card enters play (drawn from the deck or unlocked by a previous code). Everyone looks together: text, symbols, images. Often it needs to be compared with the booklet or with other already solved cards.
Everyone proposes a theory. Someone sees a pattern, someone else a hidden detail. There are no formal turns: it's continuous conversation. If you get stuck, draw a Hint card (there are up to three per puzzle).
When you think you've solved it, arrange the symbols on the decoder disk. If the code is correct, the decoder indicates which Answer card to draw. If it's wrong, try again (and lose points on the final time).
The Answer card confirms the solution and often introduces new elements: an object to cut, a subsequent puzzle card, a plot twist. The chain continues until the final resolution.

What happens at the table
Not the rules. The experience.
You assemble the team
Open the box, read the introduction to the first adventure. The talent show is in danger, someone wants to steal the trophy. Mentally assign roles: who reads, who manages the decoder, who keeps an eye on the cards. Ready.
First puzzle, first hint
The first puzzle card is on the table. Everyone looks, someone points out a detail, someone else overlays it with the booklet. After two minutes, no one understands: take a Hint card. Ah, there it is. Now it's clear.
Someone grabs the scissors
A child suggests folding the card. An adult proposes cutting it. You do it. There's a hidden symbol underneath. Everyone laughs: EXIT doesn't joke, not even in the Family version. The game authorizes you to destroy.
The chain of clues
Three puzzles solved, a fourth that only unlocks if you connect the previous results. Someone remembers a detail from the introductory booklet. You reopen it, compare, turn the decoder. It works. The thief is about to be discovered.
The trophy is safe
The last code is correct. The thief is unmasked, the show is saved, the animal heroes win again. You close the first adventure, look at the remaining materials: the second story awaits you inside the same box.

Playable only once
<cite index="15-5">This EXIT Family differs from standard EXIT Kids because it is single-use</cite>. Materials must be manipulated, solutions remain imprinted. After playing, you cannot replay it; you can only pass it on to someone unfamiliar with it or keep it as a memento.
Needs someone who reads English
The edition is in English: card texts, introductory booklet, puzzle clues. If playing with children who don't read English, an adult is needed to translate and facilitate. The language doesn't block visual puzzles, but it's necessary for the narrative.
Difficulty curve calibrated for 8+
The puzzles are designed to be accessible to children aged 8 and up. Compared to standard EXIT (12+), the complexity is reduced, but the Brand name still guarantees creative twists. If you only play with adult EXIT experts, it might be simpler than usual.
🏆Victory and defeatWhat the ending rewards▼
How it ends
How to win and how to evaluate
EXIT has no elimination: either you solve all the puzzles or you give up.
Victory
- Solve all the puzzles in the chain and reach the final card that reveals the culprit or concludes the story
- Calculate the final score based on the time taken and the number of Hint cards used (the game provides a rating scale)
- Unlock the second adventure in the same box, with new puzzles and a new independent story
Stuck or abandoned
- If no puzzle unlocks and you have exhausted all available hints, you can consult the solutions in the booklet (maximum penalty)
- There is no strict time limit, but the game measures how long it took you to evaluate your performance
- You can also decide to stop and try again at another time, as long as you haven't irreversibly manipulated the materials
EXIT has sold millions of copies in ten years because it transformed single-use from a flaw into a promise: each box is an unrepeatable event, not a bookshelf item.

Frequently Asked Questions
FAQ about EXIT: The Game – Family: The Trophy Case/Night at the Carnival
What mechanics does EXIT: The Game – Family use?
Cooperative deduction, puzzle solving, physical manipulation of components. The system is based on puzzle cards to be solved by connecting visual, textual, and symbolic clues, verified via a decoder disk that unlocks the answer cards. There are no dice, no formal turns: it's free-form solving and continuous discussion.
Can I play the two adventures in any order?
Yes, The Trophy Case and Night at the Carnival are independent stories with separate puzzles. There is no mandatory narrative continuity. However, some materials from the first adventure must be manipulated/destroyed, so once that story is played, those components are not intact.
Is it suitable for 8-year-olds or does it require an adult?
An 8-year-old can solve the puzzles if they know English or if an adult translates and facilitates reading. The difficulty of the puzzles is calibrated for that age group, but without language support, the game gets stuck. With an adult reading, it works very well as a family experience.
How long does each adventure last?
The stated duration is 45-75 minutes per adventure, but it largely depends on the group's experience and how many hints you use. A group of experienced adult EXIT players might finish faster; a family with children playing for the first time might take up to 90 minutes per story.
Is it available in Italian?
The edition sold on FroGames is in English. KOSMOS also publishes many EXIT games in German, but at the moment there is no official Italian localization of this specific Family title. If playing with children, someone will need to translate the texts.
The people behind the game
Who invented it, who designed it, who publishes it — and what else they've done.
EXIT: The Game – Family: The Trophy Case/Night at the Carnival is a cooperative deduction and escape room in a box game for 2-4 players aged 8 and up, with a duration of 45-75 minutes per adventure. Designed by Inka Brand, Markus Brand, and Emely Brand for KOSMOS, it brings the EXIT system, winner of the Kennerspiel des Jahres 2017, into two family-friendly stories: stopping a thief at the talent show and uncovering the saboteur at the carnival.
