What it's about
A cooperative mining adventure in the heart of the cave
In Minecraft: Digging Down, you join forces to explore a vast cave system. Just like in the famous video game, precious ores, useful items, and dangers await you underground: lava, deep abysses, and monsters ready to strike.
At the beginning of each round, you decide together: go deeper or return to the safe base. If you stay in the cave, light torches to illuminate the passages and make them less risky. Then reveal the cave cards and face what you find with pickaxes and swords. But the supply of torches is limited: if the light runs out, Minecraft: Digging Down ends instantly — and you all lose.
Split up to move faster or stay together to be stronger. Designed by Jens Merkl (with Stephanie Korupp and Ina Franz) for Ravensburger, Minecraft: Digging Down is a tense and immediate cooperative game, with three difficulty levels and ever-changing objectives.
Why we like it
Every lit torch is one second less. The tension isn't in the monsters: it's in the encroaching darkness.
The secret of Digging Down in one line
Go down a little further or go back? That decision, made together, is the whole game.
From the game experience
Minecraft: Digging Down
Underground
What you face in the cave
The torches
Your light supply is limited. Light up passages to make them safer — but if the torches run out, the game is lost.
Pickaxes and swords
Resolve cave cards by digging or fighting. Sometimes a powerful pickaxe is better, sometimes an extra torch.
The cave cards
Reveal them one by one: useful ores, lava, deep abysses, or monsters. You never know what the darkness ahead hides.
Health and safe base
Wounds accumulate: return to base to recover. But every step back consumes precious time.
You'll either emerge from the cave with pockets full of diamonds — or not at all. That's Minecraft: Digging Down.
A game in five moments
What happens at the table
Not the rules. The experience.
The team descends into the cave
Limited torches, objectives chosen based on difficulty level. Only darkness and rock lie before you. The first round begins with a question: how much are we willing to risk?
Reveal the first cave card
A precious ore… no, a monster. Draw your sword. A blue glow shimmers a little further: it could be a diamond. Every flipped card is a small thrill.
Divide or stay united?
Splitting up covers more of the cave, but alone you are vulnerable. Together you are stronger, but slower. It's the discussion that makes every game different.
Torches are burning out
Few torches remain and a companion is injured. Do we return to base to heal or push on a little further? Darkness advances, time is running out, tension is at its peak.
The last objective before darkness
With the last torch lit, you complete the objective: team victory! Or the light goes out a second too soon. Either way, you immediately want to play again — at a higher difficulty.
How to play
The flow of each round
A few repeating phases create escalating tension. Lean rules, real decisions.
At the start of the round, the team chooses whether to delve deeper into the cave or return to the safe base.
If you stay in the cave, light up passages to make them less risky. But your light supply dwindles.
In turn, flip cave cards and face what you find with pickaxes and swords: ores, lava, or monsters.
Heal at base when needed and aim for objectives, before the torches run out completely.
Why it's different
Six things that make it special
Pure Cooperative
You win or lose all together. No leaders and no followers: every decision belongs to the team.
The torch timer
The dwindling light is the game's clock. If it goes out, you lose: every turn is a race against the darkness.
Three difficulty levels
From the first family game to the toughest challenge: the game grows with you.
Ever-changing cave
Cards are revealed in unpredictable order: minerals, lava, chasms, or monsters. No two descents are the same.
Compact and immediate
Small box, streamlined rules, quick games. Perfect to take anywhere and explain in minutes.
The world of Minecraft
Diamonds, creepers, Endermen, and pickaxes: fans will find the video game's atmosphere, by Ravensburger.
How it ends
You win together, you lose together
In Minecraft: Digging Down there is no single winner: either the team achieves its objectives, or darkness triumphs over all.
Victory
- Complete all objectives of the chosen difficulty level
- Do it before your torch supply runs out
- Coordinate: dividing or staying united at the right moment makes all the difference
Defeat
- If the torches run out, the cave plunges into darkness and the game is lost
- No one saves themselves alone: failure belongs to the whole team
- But you start again immediately — perhaps lowering (or raising) the difficulty
Minecraft: Digging Down is a tense and immediate cooperative game, perfect for families and video game fans. Few rules, lots of adrenaline — and the desire to try again at a higher difficulty.
Frequently asked questions
FAQ about Minecraft: Digging Down
Is it just a Minecraft branded game put out to sell?
No. Behind it is a true cooperative design by Jens Merkl for Ravensburger, with a precise tension mechanism: the torch supply that dwindles and puts you against time. The Minecraft theme is there, but the game works because of its choices, not just the license.
Isn't 9+ too simple for an adult?
The rules are streamlined, but the decisions are real: when to risk, when to retreat, how to spend torches and resources. And the three difficulty levels raise the bar. It's an excellent "light" cooperative board game, not just a children's game.
How many players and from what age?
It's played by 2 to 4 players, ages 9 and up. Games are quick, also ideal for multiple rounds in a row, gradually increasing the difficulty.
Is it cooperative or competitive?
It is purely cooperative: everyone plays on the same side against the game. You win or lose as a team, coordinating moves and sharing torches, resources, and risks.
Do you need to know Minecraft to play?
No, the rules are self-explanatory. But video game fans will feel at home: diamonds, pickaxes, creepers, and Endermen make the descent into the cave immediately familiar.
Can it be played solo?
The game is designed for 2 to 4 players, so it does not include an official solo mode. It's best with group interaction and shared decisions.
Minecraft: Digging Down is a cooperative card game for 2-4 players (ages 9+, quick games), designed by Jens Merkl with Stephanie Korupp and Ina Franz, illustrations by Alexandria Land, published by Ravensburger in collaboration with Mojang Studios. Players collectively explore a cave system by revealing cards, facing minerals, lava, chasms, and monsters with pickaxes and swords. The torch supply is limited: if the light runs out, the game is lost. Each round the team decides whether to delve deeper or return to base to heal. With three difficulty levels and variable objectives, this cooperative Minecraft game offers high replayability in a compact box. Available on FroGames.it.
