The FroGames Review
Gulgotar advances across the map. Coalfang threatens the party. Atarin plots in the shadows. Suddenly, these threats have a physical presence, and the table's atmosphere shifts.
ABOUT THIS
Three legendary foes take form in Middle-earth
This expansion for The Lord of the Rings: Journeys in Middle-earth brings to the table three antagonists from the Bones of Arnor and Hunt for the Ember Crown campaigns. Designed by Nathan I. Hajek and Grace Holdinghaus for Fantasy Flight Games, it turns digital threats into physical presence: detailed, unpainted plastic miniatures that replace the cardboard tokens during narrative encounters.
In addition to the figures of Gulgotar, Atarin, and Coalfang, the pack includes six new trinkets (equipable items) and three titles that buff characters. It does not change the core game rules, but adds material depth to your games: when a villain appears on the app map, you physically place them in the center of the table.
What they say abroad
"Enhance your games of The Lord of the Rings: Journeys in Middle-earth with new figures, trinkets, and titles!"
— Fantasy Flight Games
The pack adds visual personality to already rich campaigns. A small but impactful upgrade for those who love the collectible side.

The Lord of the Rings: Journeys in Middle-earth – Villains of Eriador Figure Pack
Journeys in Middle-earth works great solo with the app managing enemies and narrative. The miniatures enhance the visual experience even when playing alone, making boss encounters more theatrical. No mechanical difference compared to multiplayer: the app scales everything automatically.
What you'll find in the pack
Three villains and nine cards to power them up (or face them)
Gulgotar
Detailed miniature of the corrupted stone giant. When he appears on the map during Bones of Arnor, you place him physically: the threat becomes tangible and the table reorganizes around him.
Atarin
The dark lord of the Hunt for the Ember Crown campaign takes shape. A lean, threatening figure that replaces the cardboard token in final encounters, heightening the dramatic tension of the final scenarios.
Coalfang
A corrupted dragon in smaller scale but with an imposing scenic presence. Perfect for the key moments of both campaigns where this enemy emerges as an intermediate or final boss.
Trinkets and Titles
Six trinket cards (equipable items) and three titles (permanent upgrades). These are drawn or earned during campaigns, offering alternative character builds and compensating for the extra difficulty of the powered-up villains.

How to integrate
The flow remains identical (with a visual upgrade)
This expansion adds no phases or rules. It plugs into the base system by replacing tokens with miniatures and adding optional cards.
The app tells you which enemies appear. If one is Gulgotar/Atarin/Coalfang and you own the pack, you use the miniature instead of the standard cardboard token. Zero extra rules.
During the app's search or reward phases, you can draw the new trinket cards (if you have shuffled them into the equipment deck). They work like other items: limited slots, specific bonuses.
When you engage Gulgotar or the others, the miniature stays in the center of the board. The app manages HP, attacks, and special abilities exactly as always. The figure is only there to make the threat visible.
The three titles (permanent upgrade cards) are earned by completing specific campaign objectives. The app will tell you when to unlock them: they permanently boost character stats or abilities.

An expansion in five moments
What changes at the table
No new rules. Just new presence.
Scenic setup
Open the pack box and place the three miniatures in front of you. They are unpainted gray plastic, detailed and solid. Even without paint, Gulgotar visually dominates any cardboard token. Place them next to the board, ready for their entrance.
First encounter with the villain
The app announces: "Gulgotar emerges from the ruins." Instead of placing the token, you take the miniature and position it on the indicated spaces. The table reorganizes: everyone looks at the figure, not just the screen. The threat is literally center stage.
New trinkets in play
During exploration, you draw a pack trinket card: an amulet that reduces fear damage. You equip it in place of an old item. Build options expand slightly, and the sense of progression grows.
Boosted boss fight
Coalfang appears in the final scenario. The dragon miniature occupies physical space on the table, and its stage presence turns the clash into a photo-worthy moment. First-time players are left wide-eyed, even if mechanically it is identical to the token version.
End the campaign in style
Win or lose, when you pack the miniatures back in the box, you’re already thinking about the next campaign. If you have brushes and paints, Gulgotar goes to the back of the painting queue. If not, that’s fine too: he looks great even in gray.
🐸Know before you buyThree honest things, from friends▼
Know before you buy
Three things no one tells you (but you should know)
Requires specific campaigns
The miniatures are useful ONLY if you own Bones of Arnor or Hunt for the Ember Crown. In the base game and other expansions, Gulgotar/Atarin/Coalfang do not appear: the figures remain unused in the box. Check which campaigns you have first.
Unpainted miniatures
They come in gray plastic. If you are expecting pre-painted figures, you will be disappointed. For those who paint miniatures, it’s a pro (creative freedom); for those who don't, they are functional but aesthetically basic. Painting is not required, but it makes a difference.
Minimal mechanical impact
Trinkets and titles add variety, but they don't shake up the game meta. If you are looking for new mechanics or scenarios, this expansion will disappoint you: it’s a scenic upgrade with minor bonuses, not brand-new narrative content.
🏆Victory and defeatWhat the ending rewards▼
How it ends
Added value (not victory/defeat)
This is a component expansion, not a campaign. It has no victory conditions of its own: it integrates into existing campaigns. Here is what you get.
Why it's worth it
- Miniatures turn key boss fights into photo-worthy, memorable moments
- Extra trinkets offer alternative builds for characters you felt were exhausted
- Permanent titles give a sense of cross-campaign progression if you play both
When to avoid it
- You don't own either Bones of Arnor or Hunt for the Ember Crown: it's 90% useless
- You are looking for new scenarios or narratives: you'll only find upgrade components here
- You don't care about the visual/collectible aspect of the game: tokens work identically
If your Journeys in Middle-earth campaigns deserve antagonists that occupy real space, this pack does exactly that. Nothing more, nothing less.

FAQ
FAQ about The Lord of the Rings: Journeys in Middle-earth – Villains of Eriador Figure Pack
Do I need the base game to use this expansion?
Yes, absolutely. Villains of Eriador is a component pack for The Lord of the Rings: Journeys in Middle-earth. It also requires at least one of the two campaigns where these villains appear: Bones of Arnor or Hunt for the Ember Crown. Without those, the miniatures never enter play.
Are the miniatures pre-painted?
No, they come in unpainted gray plastic. They are detailed and ready to be painted by hobbyists, but they work just fine as they are. Painting them is not mandatory, but you can definitely see the difference.
Are the trinkets and titles balanced or do they make the game too easy?
They are balanced. Trinkets offer alternatives to basic items (they are not strictly stronger), and titles are earned by completing difficult campaign objectives. They add variety without breaking the game's difficulty, which remains high in Journeys in Middle-earth.
What mechanics does The Lord of the Rings: Journeys in Middle-earth use?
The base game (which this pack integrates into) uses hand management of skill cards, progressive deck-building throughout the campaign, modular exploration guided by the companion app, and cooperative combat with skill tests based on success/fail symbols. The app manages enemy AI, narrative events, and story progression.
Is it available in Italian?
This edition is in English. The trinket and title cards have text in English, but the Journeys in Middle-earth game relies primarily on the companion app (available in Italian), so the language impact is limited to the few cards in this expansion.
